@@montanamangum4026 If the killer were truly repentant, he would have told the truth. Forgiveness and eternal life comes from the Lord, but we need to confess our sins and ask for that forgiveness. He does love that person. But, not everyone will get to Heaven. Think about it...would God let someone into Heaven who didn't think he is doing wrong to murder? Or breaks the commandments? Asking for mercy at the golden gates is too late. You don't want Jesus to say "...I never knew you."

@@montanamangum4026 if the killer truly repents, and ACCEPTS responsibility for his actions, he will be forgiven. But true repentance involves confession and punishment on earth under civil law. Also, one must accept Jesus prior to earthly death, as far as I know.

My brother knew her, even though he was younger. At that time the High School and Elementary School were closer, and the buses ran to both. He said he remembered how pretty she was. He passed away in 2014 and was 20 years older than me. I use to work at the local newspaper and researched this quite a bit. I also worked with her Uncle at the paper, at that time he was 84 years old and lived until he was 99. He told me a lot about her.

The fact that Lon's wife gave him an alibi all the while knowing he wasn't home with her that night is very telling. Why did she lie? Was it out of love, fear of what Leo might do to her if she'd told the truth and he still was acquitted? Fear of being stygmatized as the wife of a murderer by the community? Or was she just as evil minded as her husband? It just seems to me that justice for a child's life should have mattered more to Lon's wife than her husband's. Thank you for keeping her memory alive Leo.

I remember when I was young and visiting relatives in northwest of Jackson (Old Buck Holler near the Owsley line), they always told us that girls never, ever go out at night alone and in the daytime be close to the house. I think maybe it was cautionary because I remember them talking still about a girl who had been murdered. I am 55 years-old, so you can imagine what it was like there when I was three, four, five years-old. Half the county didn't have paved roads. Even though it was much later when I was young, they reinforced into our minds not to go out at night, and never sleep by a window. Boys could, but not girls. This story just brought all that back to my memory. They kept telling us not to even open the door at night to go out to the outhouse. I think this girl must have been what they were always warning us of, because it was 25 years since the murder. I remember visiting my cousin's home and stayed there about a week, and one night I heard something outside, so I peeked out the window to not be seen, and there two men and a teenage boy walking on the hill behind the house that was cleared for growing tobacco. They all had rifles. Grandma used to tell us that when she was young, roaming gangs of men walked around all the time through peoples' properties and would threaten anyone who said a word to them. I know it is a very old heritage in Southeastern Kentucky, but it was violent back then. It still is. There is no way I would be down there driving around alone at night, I would have been in the motel room before dark even hit. Even to this day, that is how much we were warned, and I think maybe it might be Muriel's death that they were always saying "remember that girl that got killed", they never said where or when, just that they made sure we knew not to open that door at night.

I think we all know the answer to that mystery. 😢 All we can do is wonder what her life could have been like. How many people missed out on a chance to know this beautiful young lady. Heartbroken just knowing there was nobody there to help her. Disgust at the fact that the one person who could have tip the scales of justice, chose to lie on the stand. If that person found no peace in their lifetime, and that person's rotten soul found no rest, it wasn't enough...Thank you so much for going to the site, and for telling the story of Muriel.
