I raced with Rob during his WERA years back in the 80’s, while he was teaching at PENN State. He raced several of my two stroke bikes back then including my TZ750. A good lad and incredibly brilliant engineering mind… Truly the wonder years….

I met Rob in 1994 at Summit Point. I helped unload his Tul-da 500 and a TZ750 w/GSXR wheels (and maybe front end - memory isn’t what it used to be). I’d guess that was your TZ. Getting passed on the front straight by that TZ750 (I was on an RZ) remains one of my racing highlights.

In racing you rely on sponsorships. In a public market you rely on the wallet of the customer. They obviously need to make money and research adn development for one off projects can skyrocket pretty quickly. If you have a big wallet you could've jumped on bikes like the Suter MMX500 where Suter made a 570cc 2-stroke racebike with 195hp and electronic injection. That's a pretty different thing compared to most of what you can buy.

It was great to see the Tul-aris again, I was fortunate to meet Rob when he lived in Minneapolis. I helped out with the Tul-da, on occasion, in the paddock at Brainerd International Raceway in Northern Minnesota (at the time he was collecting data on a new pressurized airbox, handmade in carbon fiber). I also worked at Professional Instruments Company where the transmission plates and other Tul-aris parts were machined by my friend Tim Wirtz. Rob is a great guy, willing to share his knowledge. I still have some of his notes, scribbled in the margins of a local newspaper, on how to improve the geometry of my old cb550 café racer!

@@EbonyPope it has a carbon fiber airbox. Edit: at 7:17 you can see the airbox in this photo, this shot is on a poster that Rob had made when the motorcycle was first raced. I still have my copy hanging on the wall in my garage! You can also see the minimalist frame with the plates that hold the transmission. The swingarm is a work of art, very long for the time. He was showing it off like a proud father at the coffee shop we all hung out at. I remember him telling me about the benefits of maximizing the swingarm length and his dismay at the extremely short one on a Buell Lighting that was parked nearby.

Rotax 670 is a great powerplant, use it in my 93 exciter sx snowmobile, even before i ported the 670 it was a lot faster then stock ex 570 engine, top speed vent from 160kmt to 0-160kmt under 8sec and run out of gearing at 200kmt on the wishometer. Make 112-114 mph on gps, gonna change the sprocket and aim for 4-5mph more in topspeed, its not used for racing except some lakeraces with friends, carburators not tuned for max 1/8 or 1/4 mile races before detonation, can pin it 2-3km without any problems. Its a screaming sleeper loocking like a bone stock exciter. Tried to put xcr 800 tripple in it, too much fabrikations so i left that idea after 10min. Love the rotax 670 and i dont like the rotax twin 800-i hate em, my 670 yamaha outrun them and outlast em without blowing up. Rotary valve power for me👍

I had almost forgotten about this bike. A bit of a stretch to say built in his basement, assembled is what I would say. The bike was so cool to see back then and many hoped that Polaris would start building them. The bike would still be competitive today de stroked/bored to meet 750cc class. With how good the teck he was using back then it's even better now, the transmission could be geared much better than off the shelf Ducati parts. I spent 2 hour's in person drooling over this bike as a 18yr old kid., wondering how he came up with every detail of the bike. Bikes that had eccentric chain adjusters alone made no scene to me, as the rake of the bike changes with each adjustment, the swing arm pivot has to change at the same time, he solved that. He set the bar quite a bit higher and everyone noticed bikes got much better quickly because of him and his 1 off bikes. I could wright a book about all the things he did that slowly came to be on many bikes, how motors got forward leaning cylinders to keep thrust angles more in line . He was crazy smart wonder if he is still alive?

Very well researched. The typical thing is that your video’s seem to fill in almost all the blanks in the magazine articles of the time. This particular machine was presented more like a crazy loner engineers dream. Here it becomes clear that the project was actually imbedded in a large companies promotional efforts and made use of it’s engineering facilities. Which explains a lot in retrospect. I always say I still buy printed magazines because they tend to go deeper into the details and backgrounds. Here the opposite is true. The printed magazines nowadays seem to be very much made by vague hipster types or oldtimers complaining about how much better the good old times where. Your video’s still ooze a sense of enthousiasm. Great new channel! Please keep it up! 👍👍

@marcbrasse747
@marcbrasse747 3 ай бұрын
@@wierdbike As far as I am concerned your narration is more then adequate. I wouldn’t make too much of the comments if I was you. OK, it’s clear English is not your native language. I get the impression you build some of your sentences in a rather Ukrainian way. For instance. I guess you said “car” where you meant “vehicle”. Maybe the Ukrainian language has a single interchangeable word for that? In English the word “bike”, a short for motorcycle, is normally used in this particular context. Of course it would be nice if you can improve on that sort of stuff but in my opinion most of these comments are near to trolling. No knowledge of the actual content so the only thing left for them to complain about are non-essential details. And always remember: The worst critics are those who have never created anything themselves. Let them first get as fluent in another language as you are in English before they start complaining. So learn from your mistakes but don’t get discouraged. 😉👍

Go back 50 years earlier Look up Kim Newcombe Built his own race bike ,winning GP's on a Koenig powered self built race bike No computers no engineering degree 1950's slide rule pen and paper Maybe a good idea for a future show Also John Britten (who needs no introduction) Both self taught New Zealand constructors and racers

Mike Ciccotto told me the bar grips vibrated so friggen bad on this bike it took all he could to keep his grip on them. It would buz your hands right off Mike quoted. Does anyone know how to reach Mike Ciccotto?

Sounds like he followed in the footsteps of the Kiwi - Kim Newcomb. He first did this with an Konieg outboard motor engine and was competing with the likes of Phil Reid and Agostini.

12:09 on ptw yes its still at the very best but what this doesnt show is usability. Thats where bikes (and cars) have really come on. I race 2 strokes & have 5 of them but a 4 stroke is far easier when its big power like this to put down

Concept of this bike looks really uncompromising - simply fantastic. The gearbox housing side panels seem to be the most massive parts of the whole bike. In my eyes this bike is no beauty - but of course this doesn't matter. 🤓

I remember talking to him at Daytona one year and he mentioned the Carbon Fibre gear case. He probably cooked the carbon in his kitchen oven. Amazing guy. We used to set him up with seemingly sencere questions about atomic structure, or austral physics and he would just go off for hours. We had no idea what he was talking about. He never knew… Gearbox internals were Ducati….

@@russelldawkins9094 Quite the contrary, it did not matter which of my bikes he road: 250,350,750 he was a mad man on anything two-stroke. He either crashed or won. He was uncompromising. Watching him fling the big TZ750 around was amazing…

Snowmobile engines are no friggin joke. Anyone who has ridden a high performance two stroke snowmobile knows that. They don't use power valves as they aren't needed in a snowmobile with a CVT. It must be like getting rear ended by a bus when that 800 gets on the pipe with some good throttle behind it. With no modern electronics and that sharp power hit, that bike sounds like a potential highside into orbit. Rider beware, throttle control and respect are obviously required 😆
