I took my chances by sketching scenes directly in pen with no chance of erasing mistakes. As in the excellent tips you gave, it helps to keep the lines steady and solid. Eventually, I overcame my fear and found a new sense of freedom.

Great tips for this beginner! On the other hand, I really kind of like the sketchy, multiple lines. For some reason it looks more lively to me. Of course I appreciate the fluidity of a single line, but I don't hate the more sketchy look.

+Bev Roberts Multiple sketchy lines can work well if you know how to control them. But it's best to start with something simple first.

They wouldn't work with the straight lines in the buildings you draw, but I think they look pretty good when drawing trees, nature, etc.

You read my mind man. I was just buggin on this yesterday. I decided to keep a sketchbook entirely in pen. Micron or ball point. It really helps get rid of the hesitation marks. That "spontaneous" look that is so important in line art in urban sketching, it can be a nerve wracking some times. Specifically though, the lines you make in the sleeve bends of shirts and things, THAT has been helping me a lot. Keeps the figures from looking flat.

Just take note of overlapping lines. Those will make your sketch look more dimensional.

You have no idea how much you have saved me Been rejected from uni because of my lines looking sketchy and lacking confidence. I didn't know what to do and almost decided to just move to another career as this wasn't this first nor time I got rejected and it's held me back a lot since then. Even after 2 years, I felt that the rejection meant I made no progress. But this, this will help me get past the barrier.

You could start a doodle book. My drawing skills improved a lot when I started doodling. The idea is that you're going to quickly to think about getting it wrong and correcting any mistakes. Eventually you will have built up enough muscle memory that you just get it right first time. I really need to start doing this again because once my drawing skills improved I stopped doodling and my skills stayed the same. I hope this helps 👍

I am a fan of all your work Teoh, but I prefer the sketchy quality in the first example, which you say is “hesitant’. I will have to think more about this and why I continue to prefer it in my own drawings.

+Mayo taizou true. but i guess a way to get better would be to try and imagine the lines in your head and place them on paper. it would also make you work faster which would be good for a job in the industry.

yeah. The guy does press too hard on the paper and didn't mention this way of sketching is more like contour and not sketching. I always make extra lines if I want to find the shapes
@SubNorm4L
@SubNorm4L 6 жыл бұрын
Well, in some mediums like ink, you can sketch using only a pen. You don't want to waste time doing an underdrawing for something that is not going to be a finished piece by any means. So, you can sketch THINKING in the lines rather than going crazy with your hand and your mind trying to catch up and trying to figure out the form. You first visualize the line in the paper, you ghost it, you draw it. Also, ink don't forgive, that builds confidence over time and better line quality.

Thanks, Teoh! When you do your outdoor urban sketching, do you use a pencil first and then go over in ink? Or, do you just draw with ink immediately?
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
For complicated scenes, I would use pencil first. This applies to unusual perspective or extremely busy scenes. For less complicated scenes, I go ahead with pen. This is actually the topic of on upcoming video I've prepared.

Hey Teoh, there is something I ve been meaning to ask. I have been inspired by your drawing videos to start sketching places ive been to and. I really like the simplicity you put when drawing people. I am visiting a zoo very soon but have no idea if I should sketch animals as well since I am not experienced on that. Howcome you dont draw animals in your sketches is my question.
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
+David I have some animal sketches but that's from a long time ago when I went to the zoo. Since I don't go there recently, I don't have many animal sketches. There aren't a lot of animals here in Singapore except cats, pigeons and pet dogs. 😂

May I know whether I can sketch with scratchy lines which is many overlapping short lines? If the line doesn't follow the correct curvature, I will add more overlapping short lines next to or on top of the existing lines, when I get a thick curve line, I will erase it until I get the correct curve line. I will ink the picture with a fine liner later and erase the pencil sketch.
@teohyc
@teohyc 11 ай бұрын
Each line drawn should have a meaning. If you create multiple scratchy lines, they must mean something. E.g. You can create multiple parallel lines and the meaning of these lines is to create tonal value. If the line you drawn has no meaning, it takes away the clarity of the sketch. What matters is the end result. So you can definitely erase untidy or unclear lines to get back the solid line.

I draw a lot of scratchy lines next to or on top of the existing curve line until I get a curve with the correct curvature, the correct line is inside this thick curve line, I erase until I get the correct line. Could you please tell me whether the sketching method is correct?

For characters, you have to exaggerate certain areas especially to make the pose look more fluid, dynamic and animated. Practice drawing from life helps a lot. Another good way to learn is to study how animators draw their characters. Animators are usually the best artists when it comes to drawing fluidly.

Hello Teoh, i'd like to ask you how to draw a circular bus station from inside ? Here is the place i draw(dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/33397529/IMG_0704.jpg), but i encountered a problem that i can't make the dome look perspectively. further more, how to make shadows only by lines, instead of using watercolour ?
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
+Yun Fen Ho That picture you have shown me is quite challenging because there are circles and curves all in perspective. If you want your sketch to be accurate, I would suggest drafting out the lines and key intersections with pencils SLOWLY paying very close attention to how each line and point relate to one another. Another tip is to start by drawing in the longest straight lines first, and use those as reference to draw in other lines.
