In December of 2020 you recommended leaving grow light on for 72 hours straight when tomato seedlings had germinated. Since then I haven't seen you repeat that recommendation. Do you still leave the lights on for 72 hours or is light positioning more important than lighting duration? - Thank you

Love the tip about angling the lights for beginning of germination. A couple of tricks I use to spread light... I have a large mirror (from an old buffet) that I place between the wall and my stand/shelves, so light reflects back onto the seedlings. Another trick is to put Reflectix around the front and side of the shelves which helps reflect light from the other directions, plus it helps keep the heat in. (Reflectix is bubble wrap insulation with foil on both sides.) Something to consider when using a full tray is how long all the different varieties take to germinate, if not planting all the same in 72 cells. Made that mistake before. LOL. It's a big consideration that makes me lean to the 6 pack or individual cells so the ones left to germinate stay under a dome while the others get close, direct light.

Interesting ginger setup. I learned some hard lessons last year on ginger and turmeric. My roots rotted in my refrigerator vegetable bin which really sucked. However roots brought inside and left in soil went dormant but were fine for resprouting this year. The key is WARMTH and using a heat mat and dome for humidity. My ginger is now sprouting. Turmeric is harder and more finicky but I think it will work also. Lastly do NOT soak ginger or turmeric roots in dishes of water at normal interior house temperatures! They will rot and die.

To reduce light waste I covered white cardstock with Mylar, punched a hole in the cardstock and hang them around the shelves with 2” binder rings. Works incredibly well because the light just keeps bouncing back and forth until it’s absorbed by something somewhere on the shelf. It also decreases the chances of going blind when I walk by it. 😏

Will do this method with the few shop lights I have thanks. I did purchase T5 grow lights not sure if this method is needed for them. Wouldn't hurt to try even with the official grow lights although I am thinking as bright as they are I won't need to have them too close.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on how you hung and spaced them. I dont want to keep moving the lights for different uses, like germination stage, so I tilt them. I release them when I dont need to germinate anymore. However, look at your lights from the side, hand tilt them, if it looks like more like is focused on the flat, it will help for the germination set up. Thanks Gary. I learn something about this set up. For my peppers on a heating mat I found that the light was a little to close for me and the seed cells were drying out . But I see that once the heating mat is removed you can lower the light . It helps. BTW have you ever grown shallots ? I am trying them this year, and gathering all the information I can about them. I am going to try and grow them from seeds. When it comes time to transplant to the garden, would you plant them to the same depth as you would onions or deeper like you would leeks ? Thanks.

For the germinating shelf, why would you angle the lights instead of moving them closer together? If the flats are aligned horizontally, and running parallel to the lights, wouldn’t that provide more even light coverage?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
You can for sure. But I dont germinate the whole time up there so I unhook them and let them swing back in place. Once my germination needs are done, I use it for 4 flats and other things. The angle hooks are quick and easy and stay up and the lights dont have to be moved as I change uses. Thanks for the book support. I did tests. I just dont like them. They dry out too fast and they get moldy and fungus grows. These things arent harmful to the plants, but just not worth it to me. I agree. I don't like the peat pots or those little pucks of peat in the tiny netting that you soak to expand them for planting. I bought some 4 inch transplants from a store, replanted them onto bigger pots and that netting never deteriorated and stumped the plant growth. I didn't notice the netting until much later. I make my own mixes now with peat, vermiculite perlite and sometimes a little sand.

It seems to me the lights on the top shelf could be positioned closer with no space between them since you only have one width of trays to light. Then they wouldn't need tilting.

Oh. I never encountered those lights. Mine all plug into and extension outlet. The extension outlet plugs into a timer. The timer is on the wall outlet. Hey there. I'm subbed in the account I log into the Roku app. I have a friendly request. There is no way for people who watch on their TVs to see links in the description. A link to the ginger content instead of the trellises at the end would be perfect timing. We CAN see those (I use in-video links all the time). I ran for the remote to click on the ginger content. But it wasn't there. Lol. Anyway. Thanks for the great content! Hope this feedback helps.:)
