Watch you don’t get ‘bean belly’. Runner beans should be cooked well as they can be quite toxic raw and can make you ill. They contain phytohaemagglutinin, which can upset your tum.

Yea, I'm growing Kentucky Wonder Pole beans for green beans, and some Pole Limas that were privately developed. I really like growing pole beans on fences, and you also harvest from both sides of the fence. Good luck.

I planted one pack of pole beans and 1 pack of bush beans but I got almost 100% germination this year. The pole lima beans are some that were developed by a man in S. Georgia and I save those seeds every year.

@@naominagata1127 If some of your seed packets say hybrid seeds, you may be disappointed in next year's crop, as some hybrid seeds won't give the same results (ie,. compact cucumbers or compact butternut squash may come back as runners... But at $3 or $4 a pack these days, saving 10 different kinds of seeds will pay for the fertilizer you need to buy for the garden!

@@TheBackGardenYard Thanks for the heads-up :) I mostly buy organic and/or heirloom seeds from some local producers. Only rarely some F1 tomatoes or cucumbers if it's an interesting variety. Being able to save the seeds is quite valuable in and of itself, even though I don't always do it. Dang, prices are about the same here - maybe this is the year to really get into seed saving :)

Planting pole beans too close together will cause them not to flower as much, and I believe topping the vines does cause them to flower a bit quicker. Hang in there, they will eventually flower.

Yep, it was actually fill dirt - mostly subsoil when I started gardening here, 11 years ago, but I add compost and mulch every year, and especially into the rows when I plant, and the plants seem to like the mixture of clay and compost now.

I couldn’t fight off the aphids this year. Neem oil hurt the bean leaves. I’m going to try adding more herbs and flowers next year to see if that helps.

Aphids can be a huge problem. I had aphids on my okra last year,tried several dish detergent solutions that didn't work, and finally sprayed them with triazicide to rid them. If you use triazicide, always spray in the evening after any open blooms have closed because it is toxic to bees.

Maybe my aphids are wimpier than yours? I skim them off between my thumb and forefinger. It's gross and tedious, but I only have to do it once a year. If they're on plants with stalks or trunks (okra, fruit tree saplings, Texas red bud yucca blooms) and I think they're being farmed by ants, I apply Tanglefoot at the base of the affected area so the ants can't climb up. (Ideally, I can catch them before they've hatched in April or May, when foliage is still pretty limited. As one of our Grounding Fathers said, "Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom from aphids," or something like that.)

I will spray the entire garden with the Neem oil(well, except the corn and lima beans) as soon as they say these almost daily afternoon showers are going to let up for a few days.

Actually I will be doing grape and muscadine videos later in the late summer, early fall, and I'll make a special effort to show the trellis system. Meanwhile find a 20 foot long and 3 ft wide area that gets at least 8 hours of sun, plant exactly in the middle of that area, and place a thin pole beside it and tie it loosely to the pole until it reaches 6 ft high.

Usually it's because the plants are too close together. If that's the case, try thinning them some. Otherwise, it could be because there was too much nitrogen fertilizer, or a lack of bees to pollinate the flowers... Hope you still get a crop!

I usually wait until they reach the top of the trellis to pinch the top, therefore more side shoots. I suppose it would be ok to start pinching about half way up though, that would leave room above for more growth before the top becomes too thick of a mass... Yes. Once they reach the top of the trellis, I will pinch them off and take off lower leaves so the suckers can run and make a second crop. I'll likely do a video on that process... Great question.

Hi Jay, I don't recommend planting 2 beans in one spot, unless you are going to thin, as the roots of each plant will compete with each other. That said, you will still get a crop. And I've had success with the topping method on several kinds of pole beans, and if you have seen long suckers on the half runners before, then go for it. Thanks for watching.

Yes Lanna, supporting the bush beans will allow them to continue to grow tall, and you may get 5 or 6 pickings from them, vs the usual 2 or 3 pickings I have found. I will do follow up videos to show how it's going. Thank you for watching.

My greenhouse is not heated, so I will start plants when the lows are in the upper 30's, outside, and the greenhouse usually only drops into 40's. You don't want to start them too early, as the roots will all bind together and it could stunt your new plants. Thanks for watching.

Hello Sir from the far North. Could you tell me what wisdom you have on the picking technique? Should you try to get the bean off the plant with the little stem intact? Or is it okay to just snap the actual bean off at the tip to remove it from the vine? (so a little bit of bean will still be hanging there).

Great question. I usually use my thumb and detach the entire bean from the plant, as I don't want to leave anything for the bugs to chew on. Also, don't let young children harvest beans, as they will yank em off and likely damage some plants.

Great question Reviews and Trials. I wait until they reach the top of the trellis or fence to top them, as I want that first vine to leave as many opportunities for side suckers to run as possible. It's only a very few days until they run to the top.

Yes, try it in your garden. I started topping the beans a couple years ago, and get amazing amounts of pole beans. The bush beans can be mulched also to keep them cleaner, but I'd rather tie them up instead.

Yea, I used to have to pick a row of butterbeans that was about 100 yards long, then shell them when we got home. But they were so good fresh like that. I'm sure those memories are why I have always had a garden. I plant Blue Lake bush beans and Kentucky Wonder pole beans. My pole limas were given to me, and I save the seeds, so no idea what they are called.

In general your garden looks anemic. The bush beens should not fall over . The stems are weak. Healthy bush beans will stand waist high. Something is wrong in your garden. Low light, use of wood chips or saw dust, or a combination. I see it in most your plants.

Don't think they are anemic, but they are growing in an area where only afternoon sun reaches them, so they do get a bit leggy, thus the need to support them. Thanks for the comment.

How do you keep Japanese beetles & Mexican bean beetles off of your green beans? Last year, all of my bush & pole beans were decimated by them.

I squish as many Japanese beetles as possible between 2 boards I made especially for beetles and the Joro spiders. As soon as the rain ends I will spray most of my plants with Neem Oil - Organic insecticide - and that also helps to keep them down. But eventually, the insects will win, they usually do, but hopefully after I pick several bushels of green beans.

My pole beans are in the middle of this growth and will pinch them off today, what a great trick! Does this also apply to peas or just beans? Thank you SO much. I don't try it with snow peas, because I plant them much closer together and they are done by mid-June anyway. Thanks for the great comment.
