Is there anything else we can use for the bean booster such as worm castings or compost tea.
@TheUrbanHarvest4 жыл бұрын
Not really as far as the bacteria is concerned. The bacteria is always around just in small numbers, the booster or inoculant is basically like a slam dunk that floods the soil with them. You can still get production without, it just greatly increases it.

Ive been told that because of beans ability as a nitrogen fixing plant, if you grow lots of them, you should grind the dead plants at the end of the season and use them as mulch as this will maximize the amount of nutrients going back into the soil. I try to mulch most of my garden plants but am making note to always mulch my bean and pea waste.
@TheUrbanHarvest3 жыл бұрын
You can turn them into the soil to decompose, use the matter as mulch if it didnt have pests or disease by the end of the season, or compost it. Just cutting the plants off at the soil line will also allow the roots to release stored nitrogen into the soil.

It should say on the package whether they are bush or pole beans. I have never planted that variety but a quick google search said they are bush so no you do not need to trellis.

Was curious what zone you are in? IFAS said that dry beans were not easy to deal with in FL, because of timing and not being able to leave on the plant long enough. Hence the zone question. If you do have timing issues with drying, what work arounds do you have?
@TheUrbanHarvest4 жыл бұрын
I'm zone 9b. I've planted cowpeas for ever for my dry beans and they have always done fine. They get aphids and then the predators take care of aphids and then I harvest my beans : ) The ones pictured in this video though are just a bush variety for fresh green beans.

Great idea! There are plenty that can take it but many that cant. I will definitely do a video on that! For summer a few good full sun are luffa, cowpea, and okra. In winter tomatoes, beans, and squash.

What raised beds do you use? I see corrugated metal ones. What's the source and do you like those better than wood or concrete block?
@TheUrbanHarvest4 жыл бұрын
No, I typically prefer cedar beds or mounded rows. I got them to give them a try, this will be my first summer in them and my primary concern is if it will make the soil to hot. Time will tell. I got them from northern tools.

How do you prevent rabbits and animals from getting into your garden beds in FL? That's why I did a small ground garden and put some chicken wire around it. I am brand new to gardening. I just planted beans, and didn't use an inoculant. Will definitely do that next year. Love your channel.
@TheUrbanHarvest3 жыл бұрын
In my neighborhood we dont have rabbit problems. More squirrels and birds than anything. I live with them : ) Rabbits can dig under fencing if they decide to so if your having issues you may need to bury the wire down and out so they cant go under.

You can also put small animal traps as well. Free meat to go with your vegetables. Use a non-lethal cage style trap if you have neighbor pets like cats roaming in your area. Although if you have cats in your area, I find the probability of wild animals getting into your garden low.

I am a first time gardener here in Central Fl and I have been looking at my bean plants and noticed leaf minors. I live in a mobile home park so all of my plants right now are in containers. I've been trying to squash them with my fingers as well as remove leaves that look like a highway cluster. I've been spraying with peppermint neem oil as well every 5-7 days. Is there anything else I can do? Am I doing something wrong?
@TheUrbanHarvest4 жыл бұрын
No, nothing wrong. They are very common here but luckily they dont do anything to the plants. Its purely cosmetic. They dont decrease yield or reduce plant growth. I just let them do their thing.

Thank you for your reply. Sorry for getting back to you so late but I had an issue with my computer. Your reply helped a tremendous amount! I'm not going to worry about them any more. I'm skeptical and curious. While this method looks interesting, if it's that good, surely there is some kind of field trial that shows it is worth the effort? Is there such a thing or should I just trust that you say it works?

Korean farming method doesn't work in most of the world because you need to have a large amount of seafood waste, and you can't live in an area with a large amount of wild predators. Lots of home gardening methods won't work for large scale farming. Also oil is actually really cheap (government regulations on its sale is the sole reason it costs so much) and the waste products provide massive amounts of fertilizer that professional farming eliminates the need for collecting large amounts of organic waste and composting it outside of chop and drop.
