♥ Yeay! ♥ What others do on Friday nights: going out dancing, to the cinema, meet friends and party hard... What I do on Friday nights: Waiting for a new video by Vicki and Jay 😍😂 Last week you've talked about prototype semantics and today about phonetics and phonology differences in AE and BE ♥ I just LOVE you for sharing and reminding me of all these fascinating information, which is still somewhere in a corner of my brain as a former linguistic student! ♥ I think the best way to learn the correct pronunciation is to listen in English and talk in English! When you're by yourself: TALK IN ENGLISH! When I am watching a series in English, which is emotionally moving, I yell and blabber in English 🙈😂 In Germany we actually have five vowels in the alphabet, but we are even worse in spoken German with around 23 different vowel sounds (thanks wikipedia :D) If you're interested: I was googling a bit after watching your video and found this interesting list, where European languages are compared according to the amount of vowel sounds in their spoken language. 😮 The more your listen to English, the more you get aware of small differences in AE and BE or the distinctions of the vowel sounds. What would recommend? 😮 I hope Philly is defrosted finally and you're able to hold your noses into some pre-springlike sunshine ♥ Lots of love from Germany Steffi
@SimpleEnglishVideos5 жыл бұрын
Hi Steffi, Vicki here. I thought of you when I was positing this. I meant to do it at 3 pm our time and I got distracted writing a script. When I realised, my first thought was oh no, I hope I haven't kept Steffi up in Germany! Ha! So glad you liked all the phonology stuff. It was a bit of a puzzle working out what words would work, because of course Jay says ah in different words to me. I'm still learning all the differences between British and American pronunciation. 23 different vowel sounds in German? No wonder my German students have had such good pronunciation! It's warming up here and but still thick coat and scarf weather.
@steffis44805 жыл бұрын
Hello there dear Vicki ♥ I’m so glad to hear that Philly finally warming up. You’re such a cordial person! Actually, I was a bit worried, when I was waiting for your video and it got a little later. I thought: “Oh no! Hopefully Vicki and Jay are alright over there!” There was nothing new on German news about the cold snap in America (aside a few comments during the biathlon world cup in Canada). But don’t worry! Your videos are always worth staying awake 😍 I can imagine that’s often hard to get accustomed to American pronunciation even after all the years you’ve already lived in the US. In Germany we really have so many ways of pronouncing a single vowel. Like “u”. “Sucht” (addiction) [ˈu] and “er sucht” [ˈuː] (he searches) or “rund” (round) [ˈʊ] - in these words the “u” is always pronounced differently. Additionally we use “Umlaute” like “ä”, “ö” and “ü”. English and German also have a lot of diphthongs and triphthongs, haven’t we? 😮 I remember a Japanese friend of mine struggling with the pronunciation of those. I hope you both will enjoy a wonderful weekend and I’m sending you rays of sunshine from Erfurt to Philly ♥ Always take care of you ♥

A big discussion on Toronto transit is the pronunciation of avenue by the electronic voice announcing street stops. Passengers were complaining about the American pronunciation. In Canada, we say, "a-ven-YUE." I'm not sure what the American pronunciation is. "A-VEE-noo?"
@SimpleEnglishVideos5 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael. In my experience ( as an American) I've heard both. I seem to remember that an older generation in New York City pronounced it a-ven-noo. But in checking an online dictionary (www.macmillandictionary.com/us/pronunciation/american/avenue) they say a-ven-noo is the proper American pronunciation. @@SimpleEnglishVideos 23 February 2019, Palermo, Sicily. Unnecessary? No! Quite the contrary! And what happens next is that when they teach students how to read English words it all inevitably becomes a blurry chaos. It would be very useful if right from the outset they made it crystal clear that English has 5 WRITTEN vowels BUT BUT BUT 12 SOUND vowels in British English and 11 SOUND vowels in American English precisely as you, Vicky and Jay, have done for all of us here. Hi Jay, Hi Vicki, could you tell me how Canadian vowels sound like? I mean... are they like American or British vowels sound? Thank you for this spectacular class!
@SimpleEnglishVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hi Marco, this is Jay writing back to you. Canada, like America has a variety of accents. I've spend most of my time in Canada in the Toronto area and there, the biggest difference people from the US notice is that Canadians will pronounce words that have "out" in the as if it was written "oat." So the phrase "Out and About in a Boat" is pronounced "Oat and aboat in a boat." That's a bit of an exaggeration but close enough to make the point. But there are so many regional variations in North America and Britain it's hard to document them all here. But one example in the US that I always find interesting is the word "oil." In the northeastern states it is pronounced "oyl." But in some southern states, you'll hear it pronounced as "all." Thanks for writing to us and thanks for watching our videos.

love the videos as always. But here you have left out the fact that the Americans also don't use the Ɔ : (open o) sound. (door, horse, etc)
@SimpleEnglishVideos5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Share your English. I haven't noticed Jay not saying Ɔ : , but you're right that we do say horse and door a little differently. I think that's because I'm not pronouncing the /r/ at the end though and he is. That could be affecting the vowel. Is that what you're thinking of?

Okay, I guess I speak Britmerican English, as I say "class" the UK way and "can't" the US way.... (As a coder I use the word "class" a lot as it's a very vital word in Object Oriented Programming, which mostly revolves around classes). Now when it comes to words like "pot", "hot", "not" etc. I never knew the way I said them was the U.S. way... Now "pot" is also a Dutch word (with roughly the same meaning as in English) and in Dutch its pronunciation comes pretty close to UK English... Irony! (Although you wanna watch out with "pot" in Dutch, as it's also a slang term for a lesbian and some of them consider that word an insult, so when you use it, make sure to make its context clear). What always gets me in English (especially since Dutch spelling rules are overall pretty phonetic), is that it's always guessing how words are pronounced. "Man" and "Can" vs "father", "bra". The "a" pronounced in two different ways, regardless of the dialect. The verb "read" is one I hate when reading/writing, as the present tense is pronounced as "reed" and the past tense (and perfect form) as "red", yet you write it the same way. Mostly I can guess the word's pronunciation quite right when I never heard somebody saying the word before, but some words had a pronunciation I never expected, and perhaps you can make a video about those words, as their pronunciation was far from obvious for me. - Recipe (I always pronounced it a bit as "ree-caip" until I found out its "re-ce-pee", which kinda baffled me). - Mirage (I kinda pronouced with the emphasis on the "i" before and 'age' as 'edge', but finding out the emphasis was on the 2nd syllable and the 'a' pronounced as in 'dance' (UK English) even in US English... geez). - Catastrophe (Since English copied this word from French I originally used the French pronunciation (also common in Dutch btw) until I learned the English pronunciation "Cat-a-stof-ee" later) - Mayor (Puzzled the hell outta me how to pronounce that. I think I mastered it, but I'm still not sure). - Colonel (I had to practice on that one, I tell ya. It didn't help the Dutch variant is only one letter different (kolonel), but the pronunciation doesn't even come close to English). Now some mistakes I hear my fellow Dutch often make is pronouncing letters that are silent... Like the "w" in "sword" (perhaps because the "w" is pronounced in its Dutch equivalent "zwaard"), and although some words in which the first letter is silent where Dutch do it right like "gnome", "knee" and "who", I sometimes do hear them pronounce "w" in "whole", but maybe the word "while" in which it is pronounced and which comes close in spelling is confusing here. Although I must add that in Dutch there are no silent letters so the "g" in "gnoom" (means "gnome") is pronounced as well as the "k" in "knie" (means "knee"). Now I must say that the "w" in "sword" is the most common "silent letter" mistake I hear. Of course when Dutch say that English doesn't make sense with their silent letters I often tell them the French language is worse (as in most French words the last letters aren't pronounced, but in a few they are), hahaha... Then again I bet you guys can't say "hottentottententententoonstelling" ('hottentot' = slang term for a small person, 'tent' = 'tent', 'tentoonstelling' = 'exhibition', but the meaning is no longer important, the word merely exists these days as a test if you can pronounce it properly or not).

English is my first language and I had the same problem with "colonel" 😂 I was saying it like "col-uh-null" or something up until 7th grade when I learned it was... kernel??? What a weird language
@SimpleEnglishVideos5 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, read is a horribly confusing word when you look at the spelling. Thanks for sharing these other tricky words here. We plan to use many of them in our 'difficult words' pronunciation series. We're just waiting for the weather to warm up. And no, we can't say hottentottententententoonstelling. Ha! We wouldn't know where to start! :-)
@TheRealTricky5 жыл бұрын
@@kaylazx Well, it's good to know that "colonel" was not because English is not my first language, and the way you said it comes a bit closer as we say it in Dutch "Koh-lo-nell", and yeh "kernel" is much like it to me, and I thought "da f----------k" ;)
@TheRealTricky5 жыл бұрын
@@SimpleEnglishVideos Yeah, it's not that they were hard to pronounce (although 'colonel' did take some practice... never realized how close it came to "kernel" until KaylaZX mentioned that, and that for me as a code.... dang!), now that I know how to pronounce them, it was just that the pronunciation was far from what I expected when I saw those words for the first time in written word.

I am from just north of London too and found that although I have lots of London language traits I also have picked up some American language styles for certain words. Drives my family nuts sometimes but I'm curious if if both of you have picked up on each others language over the years?

Hi Autumn. Great to meet you and interesting question. I think the world's got much more connected over the years and now if you live in the UK, you're almost bound to be influenced by American English. And in the US, I meet a lot more folks who are watching British TV shows and films, and I often hear what used to be Britishisms popping up here. I'm sure Jay and I must have influenced one another's English in all sorts of ways, though it's hard to keep track of course. I'm sometimes a bit surprised to find I still doin't speak 'merican. :-)

I've read somewhere that in American English the specific lengthening of a vowel /:/ doesn't make any difference. Of course there are long vowels, but they might be shorter than the British ones (?)

Hi N N. I don't know much about this, but it cane up when we were making this video. I'll have to research it and please let me know if you discover anything too.

I don't think that the word "can't" could cause much trouble in a long sentence if pronounced incorrectly. People might be taken aback but will definitely understand and have compassion towards a non-native speaker. The real problem comes up when the word is pronounced separately, as in "No, you can't". In this case, there are ways to get ourselves out of trouble. We could just say "No, I don't think you can" it sounds more polite actually. Plus, when we are to keep our mouth full open and make the long vowel sound /α:/ we could drop the "t" altogether and link the sound to the next one (if any) so as to avoid an embarrassing moment. As for the American pronunciation of can and can't, I have to say I have found myself struggling with the same issue Vicki. But here's a a small tip. When Jay says I can see I think the stress has to be on the word "see" because he empathises on the action of the verb "see" . After all, the word can in this case sounds weaker as the /æ/ sound changes to the /ə/ sound. When Jay says I can't see, the stress is on the word "can't" because he can't. So here it goes: ˈɑɪkənsiː ( I can see) ɑɪ ˈkænʔsi: ( I can't see) I 'd love to see a video of you guys pronouncing the words lock, lack, luck, look and lurk in both British and American English. Keep up with you excellent work!!! Much love!!!

Hello Lee. Jay here. I love hearing the Scottish "R". It so rich. It's so much more pronounced than the American "R", and of course, Vicki simply doesn't say R in a lot of words. Did she say 'father' or farther." Hmmm. Thanks for watching.

@@SimpleEnglishVideos hello it does sound like Vicki is saying farther in stead of father. You should to the word "Edinburgh".
