Something that will make installing your chains a lot easier and will allow you to get them tighter the first time. Lay your chains out flat like you did. Use a 2x4 or 4x4 about 8 inches long. Put the wood block sideways about 1/2 way down the chain set you have laying out in the square where the chains connect side to side. This way when you drive onto the chain set, park on top of the wood block. This keeps your tires off of the chain to allow you to move them around and pull them tight. Will save you a lot of aggravation trying to get those chains tight. This way you won't sling a chain and rip out your fender. Good luck out there.
@LTVoyager2 жыл бұрын
I bought a couple of the plastic chain install ramps with my last set of chains and they work great. They have slots you lay the cross chains in and then drive up onto the ramps and it spaces and positions the chains perfectly. I also bought the chains that have four or five rotating cams around the chain and they are fantastic. You hook the chain as normal getting it as tight as possible and then use the wrench to rotate all of the cams really pulling the chains tight. Add the rubber star tensioners and drive away and generally don’t have to stop and tighten the chains as in the old days.
@coachgeo2 жыл бұрын
hmm.... to surmise to make sure folk and myself understand.... a wood block per chain being fitted gets placed in the open slots between the chain. You stop on top of the blocks. That sound right? Wont work for nice diamond chains though. Might have to buy a plastic fancy type the diamond arranged chain can sit inside allowing tire to roll above them for that. Go figure... I have one set of those diamonds and one set of regular cross chains.

This is a super tutorial for snow recoveries using what looks like heavy duty T-bar chains. Growing up on a farm and ranch down in Sevier County (just 70 miles south of Robby), it was one thing to have aggressive tires but a 4x4 with proper fitting and heavy duty chains was virtually unstoppable. You have very slick soil up there in Sanpete County so it's not only the snow but the mud you have to deal with. Super wide tires are a detriment. I've been on a snowy deer hunt just over the mountain above Nephi where a little Chevy Luv pickup with stock tires pulled totally tricked out huge 4x4 pickups with campers up a series of switchbacks all night long before the opening day of the hunt. You and Hillbilly saved the evening for the birthday! Way to go guys! BTW, my elk hunting buddies up in the Bob Marshall Wilderness area in Montana blast through 3-4 foot snow to get in/out of their winter camps. They fabricated their chains out of logging chains! Knarley rigs. Its Interesting that they preferred narrower but taller tires as well.

The tracked loader seemed like the best tool for the job. For what you're doing, you may need multiple spider tensioners per wheel! I carry a few short chunks of 2x4 to aid in mounting chains. Place 2x4s between the cross links. Stop the tire on top of the 2x4s, so none of the links are pinned under the tire. Makes it easier to mount, adjust and tighten the chains.
@wescollins73312 жыл бұрын
My experience is those loader tracks are designed to be durable for job sites and actually don't have a ton of bite in the snow. Probably wouldn't have had enough weight, speed or traction to the get the trucks broken free and moving.

@adamshindel40542 жыл бұрын
If you tie up the tails of the chain with wire, or tuck them under with the tensioners, it'll make a lot less noise and help keep the fender or brake damage to a minimum. Once I figure out which links work best I tie back the tails so it's easy to tell which links to attach to next time you chain up. ....just more unsolicited advice for ya!

Excellent recovery .... snow is no joke! Back in 1989 (Thanksgiving Day) I was at the Navajo Lake campground above Cedar City tent camping. It was early morning and light out, and I was still in my tent. I was the only one in the campground at the time. I thought I heard a rifle shot ring out, but didn't give it a second thought (figured it was just hunters). Shortly after, another "rifle" shot rang out .... this time closer. Still didn't give it much thought. All of a sudden I heard something hitting the tent? Looked outside and could see that it had started snowing .... hard! The "rifle" cracks I had heard was from lightening .... the first time in my life I had ever experienced "thunder snow". I'd never taken down my camp so fast in my life ... basically throwing everything in the back of my 1986 Jeep Wrangler. It was snowing even harder by that time. To say I was getting a little concerned is an understatement. I was a long way up in those mountains! No cellphones back then. By the time I hit Utah Rt14 west of Duck Creek it was really coming down. Now I was above Navajo Lake making my way out when in two separate places there were trees smoking - lightening strikes from those two "rifle shots"! I was on pins & needles making my way down Rt14 to Cedar City. It was snowing like the dickens when I hit Interstate 15. Semis were not slowing down and would bury my windshield in heavy slush causing me to pull over because my wipers could not handle the weight of all that snow and slush. That mess did not let up until I got near St. George, then the rest was clear sailing to Boulder City Nev. What an experience.

Just a general couple of tips from an old polar fox: never drive with a chain slack. It destroys every little piece of metal so quick you wouldn't believe it. (I speak from experience, only did it once, my then boss was pissed.) It also does seem that a little more clearance between rear tires and chains is needed. You won't regret it if you widen the gap. Secondly: cut the chains to length back home - then the mistakes will be dealt with in a nice and warm place...

Many years ago, we took my XJ to the north rim of the Grand Canyon in the winter on the way back to Houston from SLC. I figured that as long as we were in the area, we might as well see the Grand Canyon. I wasn't aware that they closed the north rim during the winter. The snow was about 18" deep when we got to the (closed) turnoff for the park. As I looked back along the road, I could definitely see the two tracks of my wheels and the half-moon shape of my differential in the snow. No chains, just the stock XJ 4WD with a 3" lift and 31x10.50 tires that had a mud tread pattern since we only see a slight dusting of snow in Houston every 20 or so years... Could not see the road on the drive up there because it was completely covered by the snow, so I just aimed for the center of the area between the trees... I had a hydraulic winch on my XJ, just in case...

Best chains go on the front , the steering, acceleration and breaking are all controlled from the front wheels on a 4x4. Also it’s a good thing you own a body shop, that banging you hear is the chains slapping against your wheel wells and liners, and can cause a large amount of damage. I see you don’t do a lot of deep snow driving.
