Blue on blue air defense fire isn’t that rare and has happened in the past. Likely the aircraft was flying with IFF off and depending on Mode 5 IFF. Put simply Mode 5 IFF means the targeting radar sends an encrypted signal saying “I’m about to smoke you” that wakes up the IFF on the friendly aircraft to flash “don’t shoot, I’m an F/A 18” ….that system failing is one possibility. In addition the F/A 18 might have had its IFF on but the cruiser interrogated the wrong radar track. If there had been a lot of activity with incoming fire it might have just been human error from “task saturation.” In any event this has happened several times in the past, and though unfortunate, is not particularly “sus” The area is hot right now

Ah, someone has never been in the military and it shows... We do thousands of things daily and very very frequently mistakes happen. The vast majority are small enough to be swept under the rug or solved in house. But when one ship hits 2 pilots that belong to another ship, that's not going to go unreported. That said, if there is ANYTHING doubtful about it is that we hit a stealth aircraft (which would be messaging to someone else in a very nonthreatening manner) which is not the case here

Once the Israelis realized their error, they tried to rescue the crew however due to the sensitive nature of the equipment on board the Liberty, the officers refused assistance. Accidental fratricide is not as common in modern warfare as it used to be, but it still happens. Go look up friendly fire incidents in WWII or Vietnam. In Vietnam alone, it is estimated that *14%* of US combat deaths were friendly fire.

That's my guess, the aircraft IFF system malfunctioned with the cruiser on alert for missile launches. A bad or no response to an IFF query will result in the AEGIS system launching.

For IFF to work, it has to be loaded correctly. My experience with navy is they don’t really know what they are doing. And they did not know how to check it before launch as I had to do it for them back in 2002. I was USAF. My bet is, it was working but 2 aircraft were probably bumped up to spares and were not loaded due to the schedule change. Expensive mistake and a lot of drug tests are being done and head hunting. There are other possibilities but this is the most likely scenario in my experience.

Being there were two "pilots" in the aircraft we can safely assume it was a Super Hornet (or Growler) as there are no other two seat aircraft currently in service on the carriers. I have 19 years of experience on the E/F Super Hornet. The APX-111 transponders are hot garbage and drop codes or outright fail extremely frequently.

Not Friendly Fire. In order for that to happen you'd have to have a simultaneous override of multiple IFF (Identify Friend or Foe) systems. It was most likely shot down by Houthi rebels using Russian AA system, and the U.S. government is trying to save face. Oh by the way, one way to tell if I'm right or wrong about that is to look and see if the USS Gettysburg skipper AND the CAG (Carrier Air Group) skipper and the squadron skipper are relieved of command for "lack of confidence" (they always use that generic term). If it was REALLY a friendly fire incident, they will do that without haste.

imagine what it's like in today's DEI Navy. The total lack of discipline and the total bottom of standards. How absolutely toxic women are to good military bearing. How poorly the officers and chiefs lead. Any real world mission and tasking is an interruption to their daily lives. Now imagine that ship after immediately after this incident. It's completely ruined, all cohesion is lost. Play the USS Stark scenario in today's navy and they ship burns and sinks just like the bonhome Richard did in Port. The whole Navy needs to be decommissioned. It's rotten from the CNO all the way down to the bottom..... Maybe the sub guys are still ok. Maybe NavAir is ok.....but the fleet is done.
