Here I am in the wee hours of the morning in San Jose, California, wanting to follow along with your freeform watercolor video, but not prepared to paint along. I very much enjoyed it, so much that between viewing it and a cold beer, I'm returning to bed feeling wonderfully ready to paint tomorrow. Thanks so much, Paul, for your free vids; you will never know the extent to which they have helped me live happily as a widow.

I just discovered you this morning. WOW, you are awesome. I appreciate your invitation to experiment. I have been paralyzed thinking every stroke must be perfect and unless it is such, I have no ability to paint. I now feel so free. Thank you from Tennessee.

Much needed tutorial. Thank you for another watercolour Wednesday. These excersises help us know the shades better too. eg Dark Hookers Green pigment of the Camlin brand that I use, is different from other shades. It lifts of cleanly, doesn't disperse, good fir mark making but no use diluted. Similarly for other colours. Long time since I played with colours. It will be fun. Thank you and have a lovel trip💐

Thank you for encouraging us to do exercises like this. It helps enormously to be able to relax and 'just 'let the paint do its thing'! So much to learn! How often do I repeat that sentence in my head! I loved your spontaneous paintings before (and this tutorial is very much along those lines) but would be very grateful if maybe, at one point, you could do another one? Great tutorial!

Let’s go back one more step how much water do you put on your pallet to get the paint sweat how mushy are the paints in their little wells and then how much water do you have on that brush when you’re pulling that paint out? That’s the beginning and I think that’s my problem and probably a lot of other peoples problem before they get to the paper and how wet the paper is with the brush many thanks really enjoy your videos.

Morning Paul. Very early morning for me in NZ...cold and blustery 6am. But very happily watching your tutorial wishing I was in Devon on the painting retreat. I love this tutorial. I wish I could relax and just paint freely like that without any thought as to what it might be. I feel very inhibited. Almost scared to just let go and see what happens. When you do this kind of exercise, do you have any idea of what you are hoping to paint? I find it almost impossible to sit down and just paint without having some idea of what I want to paint. Thank you Paul. Looking forward to trying this one and just relaxing into it and not "thinking" too much

I second Lindasteger's questions about the wetness of the paints in your well and on your brush. Secondly, my bigger problem with paint wetness is how to match the wetness of the paint on the paper with the new pigment you are about to add. You often touch wet paint to wet paint with little or no bleeding. How do you control that? And often when I paint, for example a sky, the blue pigment bleeds into what is supposed to be white clouds with sharp points so it looks like an aggravated porcupines back.
@heathermckinlay8072
@heathermckinlay8072 Ай бұрын
I third that as well. I did watch a Russian video where she set a timer to let the water absorb into the paper. Again she said it differs from brand to brand but 1-3 minutes. Previously I thought you put the water down and touched the puddle with the pigment. Now I wait, usually two minutes but cheaper paper less time.

This was a very entertaining demonstration of random mixing of colours but apart from telling us to use plenty of water, you gave no guidance on the actual ratio of water to paint, which is what the title of the video leads us to expect. I would appreciate a tutorial on that topic, giving very specific examples of the use of thin mixes, thin mixes, and some stages in between.
