There is no one right way to maintain a starter, and you'll find they are very resilient. As long as there is no mold it should be easy to keep active and ready to bake bread with. Join me to learn how tto maintain a starter over a 2-week span. I show different methods for those who bake every day and for those who don't want to bake very often (I go in spurts myself).
I did forget to mention that you should feed your starter with UNBLEACHED flour and filtered water (Chlorine and bleached flour can kill the microbes in your starter).

Thank you Julie! I know this video was a lot of work, it is so helpful! Here's my tip for you, I keep a piece of blue painters tape on the bottom side of my scale with the weights of the different starter jars I use. ❤❤

I’m having a Julie marathon this morning!!😊 I absolutely love everything you share! Thank you!! I’m in the middle of a surgery prep and won’t be able to have bread for sometime. However, in a few months I’m going to start my sourdough journey. For health reasons I NEED to learn this technique. So I truly really appreciate your sharing & insights. God bless & take care.

You explained that very well and made me feel very confident about using a sourdough starter. I used to bake sourdough bread every few days. I would make 3 loaves at a time to feed my family and to give one to my friend. I don’t need much these days so I buy it from my friend once a week. I thought I would have too much trouble trying to keep the starter alive when I only needed a little each week. I might give it another try. 😊😊

We have several wide mouth mason jars and I use one for my starter. I just tear a clean jar on my scale when I feed my starter.

Thank you so much! I am new to sourdough starter…it has only been one year since I started my sourdough starter. I am still trying different recipes and I have failed as well when I made some recipes. Please teach us about sourdough starter and all the different recipes from sourdough starter and discards.

Is it true, that this type of bread doesn’t affect blood sugar?? Thanks for teaching us! ❤

I wouldn’t go as far as to say it doesn’t effect blood sugar. Because of the slow fermentation process it will not spike your blood sugar as high or as quickly as bread from the store. Hope that makes sense.

So if you want to make bread one time a week do you keep it in the fridge? When should i take it out of the fridge? The day i make the bread, the day before?

If you don’t want to feed and discard your starter every day, I would keep it in the fridge. If you fed it before you put it in the fridge you could take it out and bake with it as is on the day of. Or, you can take it out the day before, and feed it before you bake with it.

I think there are ways to make it with ground nuts/seeds or gluten free flour but I have never experienced with it.
