tip: put a slight crown on the rollers so that the belt will self center no matter what you do!
@villeqq47898 жыл бұрын
You missed the point of having a belt sander like this. It's a feature that he can miss align the belt.
@pcfreak19928 жыл бұрын
I had the same idea. A slight crown would most likely also help stabilize the belt since it moves quite a bit when in active use.

Absolute GENIUS to add that adjustment wheel that can pull and maintain that belt THAT off center. It allows you to work stock at different angles with inside and outside bends. I think everyone believes the belt was just drifting off center while you were working the knife. If people payed more attention to what they were watching (again GENIUS), instead of just trying to correct what they believe are mistakes, they would have been just as impressed as I am. I hope they re-watch this and discover your creativity.
@picturetech7 жыл бұрын
Rocket Launching Llama Pretty cool huh. I saw that but kept re-winding until I figured it out because it looked soooo strange. I kept wondering why it took him so long to correct the tracking until I realized that he was using it to his advantage, then corrected the tracking when he needed it flat. It wasn't made all that clear in the description or video because of the timelapse.
@AddictedtoProjects8 жыл бұрын
Not sure whether you've noticed, but there appears to be something wrong with the headstock bearings on your lathe? You can see that when you are drilling the workpiece, the whole chuck moves back and forth. May want to have a look at that! ;)

plasma cutter gets replaced with an angle grinder (60$) mig welders can be pretty cheap but stick welding is even cheaper (200$) an a metal lathe.. well theres no replacement for a solid lathe (6000$) maybe skip the lath and make some wooden pulleys or buy premade pulleys.. or make all your projects out of square material haha

Tip: modify the rollers to have a slight bulge outwards in the middle, instead of being perfectly cylindrical. This will keep the belt centred. They're called "crowned pulleys". See this article for some extra information on how it works: woodgears.ca/bandsaw/crowned_pulleys.html
@scrager48 жыл бұрын
on a bandsaw you always want the blade centered. on a belt grinder, you want to be able to slide the belt to the edge for concave and inside corner sanding. The tracking knob and flat wheels allows this.
@hotdognr123238 жыл бұрын
Having the adjustment roller crowned would make it so that the belt is both adjustable and doesn't wander like you see in the video.
@epicman234788 жыл бұрын
It was not wandering he was adjusting the tracing knob
@lukasdon00078 жыл бұрын
Clifton Clendenen Without crowned pulleys a belt will wander. There is nothing preventing it, after all. There is absolutely zero reason not to use a crowned pulley. Not sure why some people are 'defending' that.

Another awesome build! Small note: the gas springs should be mounted with the shaft pointing down, so that the oil inside lubricate the seals. They will last longer that way. And it will track better with a crown in the rollers (a couple of turns of tape in the middle should be enough).

Well, plus for creativity :) Assemble such machine by welding, this is something new, I hope you will not have problems centering the belt. Also, you need to crown your tracking wheel. Otherwise, as you can see, the belt will dance all over the place regardless of how you keep it aligned. I think the tractor wheel is supposed to be crowned as well, but i'm not sure. Mine isn't and sometimes if i push it really hard it will slip. The last two are ok as they are.

Having been a belt polisher of gas turbine blades from four years at GE Power Systems Airfoils I might offer a couple of suggestions. First the horizontal part of the belt at the bottom needs to be open on both sides so that you can get your workpiece underneath it. By doing this you can have the belt bend and produce curves. Second. All the rollers could probably be bought cheaper than you could make them. All are metal except the one closest to you which is rubber. As one poster noted, it needs a crown, a very slight crown. It appears that your arm moves which is perfect. Norton makes what we found to be the best belts - ours were 144 inches long - and are layered to allow fresh grit to contact the workpiece. You did a magnificent job on this. Norton is the same company which makes rocks for angle grinders.

That's a nice looking grinder. Bang-up job. From my experience in building my own, I think your have a slight alignment issue there, judging from the way the belt shifts when you apply pressure. Check the angle of your axles, and make sure the wheels are all lined up. When you get it bang on, that belt won't shift when you press hard on it.
