I was a metal worker. So I use grinders quite a lot. I've seen discs explode, (quite regularly) I've seen people catch loose clothing in them and the grinder has climbed up them and hit them square in the teeth. I've had it happen to me and luckily my tshirt jammed it up just below my neck. I've seen all kinds of accidents with them. Even a fine disc can chew flesh up VERY quickly. I just would never use a grinder without anything but 100% respect. As manufacturer intended. Edit: it's cool to read the working men of the world in agreement with regards to safety, because I know it comes from experience and respect for yourself, your trade and tools. Also, it's nice to have a shared experience and respect with people in the trade from round the globe. All the best from England.

When I was an apprentice, a disc exploded 40-50 cm from my face. To this day, I still don't know how I didn't get hit by a burst of shrapnel. I was wearing safety glasses, but it could easily have done some nasty damage. Stay safe out there, guys.

Used to use big air powered 7 inch grinders at work. They demand respect. Lots of power to grind through those weld. Had a tiger buffing pad we used on stainless to pretty up after grinding and to smooth the edges catch the very end corner and I was in a hurry and was stepping around the piece. Well that wheel wrapped up in my shirt and tore it shreds, barely left a mark on me though. A buffing wheel. Can't imagine what an actual grinding disk would have done to me. Yikes.

@phankeehone48 Those discs do just explode sometimes. It happens. The moron who said I sound dangerous and incompetent in reply to my comment obviously hasn't worked with grinders day in day out for years, because if he did, he'd know It can be an insignificant little thing that you catch the disc on and it just explodes. It's spinning that fast. Sure wakes you up. Also makes you realise why eye protection is so important.

Years ago a relative owned a vacuum cleaner shop and he had a huge buffer that was used to polish up the aluminum castings on machines he rebuilt and sold. He had several Baldor buffer motors set up with several types of pads, one looked to be just a thick piece of corrugated cardboard but it didn't spin nearly as fast as an angle grinder. I have four angle grinders, the fastest one says its spins at 16,000 rpm, the slowest is marked 10,500 rpm. A buffer motor only spins at around 1,800 rpm or so. Mine spins an 8" cotton rag wheel on one side and a composite disk on the other. I could see the homemade cardboard working on a buffer but those type of discs are cheap and likely not worth the trouble to make unless your time is of no value.

Схвачены на гайку болтом М10, сточенным у хвоста на трехгранную фаску под губки патрона дрели. Намазываю её зеленой пастой ГОИ. Работает, как Золушка уже 4й десяток лет. Fine grade wire wool for the iron works a treat and a lot less hassle. I've used autosol and wire wool for years for many metal polishing jobs, doesn't take long either. Even used tin foil on to on some jobs. As for the knife, I wouldn't use this particular idea. An old leather belt with the same compound is great to strop with👍🏻. I can see theis wheel useful for de rusting large pieces though.

This is called a rotary polisher. Usually it operates at a slower RPM and uses a type of fabric to hold the polishing medium with a more durable base. There have been higher RPM polishing tools using a similar type of corrugated paper as well, however usually not quite as high RPM as an angle grinder. It can be overly abrasive at the angle grinder speeds. Of course this depends on purpose. You'll find that it is very easy to ruin the symmetrical edge of a blade sharpening it with this method. However, this method could be useful to remove surface rust in a heavily degraded blade.

I myself have used multiple sizes of grinders on almost a daily basis for twenty plus years. I have learned the larger sizes like 10" are far less dangerous due to the fact that they demand the respect of your attention to safety. The smaller 4.5" or 5" grinders seem to give a disbelief that they somehow aren't as dangerous...this is the exact opposite of what really is, I have been injured more times and in fact damn near lost a thumb because of it. The smaller the more deadly in my personal opinion. These things are not to be taken as anything but deadly or at the very least extremely dangerous to handle. That being said, I have come to believe that the cordless versions of these are substantially safer when doing something questionable because most have a clutch which I've never seen on a hardwired grinder. Just my biased opinion of course.

Nice video, I enjoyed it and gave it a thumbs up, Its not patented because it is dangerous, and when it eventually reaches the glue parts on the spindle it will be more abrasive than anything or glue bits will go flying. Angle grinder needs to have lots of respect and eye safety, I'm a normal person that uses an angle grinder a few times a year, already have had a sanding disc dettach itself from velcro holder and fly straight to just below my eye and also while cutting a cupboard in half in a difficult to reach spot the grinder crawled out of my hand with a wood / aluminium cutting blade and crawled right into my finger fortunately i pulled away from it, it left a deep gash. Angle Grinder Respect +1000

Dangerous yes "because of the glue"?. Absurd nonsense. It's an angle grinder which are inherently dangerous, that's why it's dangerous. It's not patented because companies don't want buffing wheels to fit an angle grinder that is why they sell you a bench sander. Similarly, you cannot buy wood cutting blades for angle grinders. They want to sell you a circular saw or multi tool instead

I have probably polished over a hundred irons in my life. Who hasn’t? But I never thought to fashion a buff wheel out of cardboard using actual grind wheels as templates. This is a true testament to engineering. I can’t believe I have been polishing my irons with barkeepers friends and an old t shirt wasting minutes when I could have had it done in less minutes with cardboard board. That is after the six hours of cutting sculpting and smoothing cardboard. I’ll give this a try as I’m sure another iron is bound to need polishing in the very near future.

What most people dont realize, the cardboard in this video is just a media to hold the BLUE BUFFING COMPOUND he is using. The cardboard isn't doing anything but acting similar to a soft felt buffing wheel, the compound is engineered to be abrasive to metal for polishing. So its like me using rubbing compound by hand to remove a scratch. the buffing pad or microfiber cloth isn't really doing the work (some pads are aggressive and do cut, but primarily its the compound) So TLDR, if he did this with just cardboard and no compound, it wouldn't even touch the dirt on the metal tbh (Polishing metal is one of my jobs at my shop. we Polish aluminum and use those compound sticks and airway buffs on grinders to make aluminum look like chrome)

The big grinders you'd need to be off your nugget to even dare try this. They would make an instant fool of you with the huge amounts of torque

As long as a hospital is next door. Those grinders spin ridiculously fast. I'm all about ingenuity but safety is first ALWAYS! It's harder to do any work when you have a chunk of that grinding wheel stuck in your face because the cardboard failed, which it will, allowing play in the grinder disc, then it snaps and launches at you.

Part of the reason they're effective polishing discs is that we coat the cardboard with an extremely fine silica product. It keeps boxes from sliding off each other in the shelf or pallet. It makes for a very high number grit polishing surface when used like this. You're welcome.

@@jankoodziej877 Actually, not only that. What he says is true. I watched Thomas Johnson, a fine furniture restorer use brown craft paper as the final sanding material for a 19th century writing slope. Paper is often sized with glue and fine mineral dust to provide strength and stability. So, it is slightly abrasive. You can rub up delicate brass ware with a brown paper bag. It won't handle heavy oxidation, but a little grimyness, it can work.

@@aaronst542 cardboard and paper are quite abrasive. Wood fibers are tough and also contain tiny particles of silicates that are very hard and abrasive, in addition to abrasive dirt and debris that the box material picks up in its life from production to the big recycling bin in the sky. Ever break down a bunch of cardboard boxes with a knife? It gets dull very quickly. In fact, many of the fancy super steels we drool over in high end pocket knives were developed for industrial slitting blades. When you are slicing miles and miles of cardboard, paper, carpet, etc, during a shift, factors like edge retention and wear resistance are paramount to minimize downtime spent resharpening and replacing the slitting blades.
