Full version of „Von Fremden Ländern und Menschen“: • 2 year piano progress ...
During X-Mas holidays 2018 I thought to myself, there has to be an app to learn the piano. Turns out there is and so January 2019 starts my personal piano journey.
This is a fast forward through my first two years of practicing. About halfway through when you hear Schumanns „Melodie“ I startet taking lessons from a teacher. Initially only my parents helped me with the correct posture and such things (they are both playing for more then 20 years)
At „The Entertainer“ I‘m through with the Simply Piano courses. At that point I have done all available lessons and a bunch of the sheet music from the beta section.
I feel it‘s important to not that I didn’t just use Simply Piano during those two years, I also used other apps like Flowkey, watched KZbin videos and used traditional sheet music.
The only experience I had when I started off was playing the keyboard when I was a child (so about 25 years ago), so essentially a little bit of leadsheet. Don‘t know if that helped me, but overall I think my progress over two years is solid.
Hope you liked the video, thanks for watching.

My mother used ro play the piano but i never really was interested in playing. I tryed it out and it was quite enjoyable. Now i am already playing for 5 months and im practing für elise nightmare and am already able to play für elise,turkish march, moonlight sonata (without 3rd movement) a d many other songs. Its just more enjoyable to play songs yourself instead of just hearing them

Not bad! I took piano lessons for 6 years, starting at the age of 9. That was 1959. I've got to admit, you are advancing much faster than I did. Yes,I still play, usually 2 or 3 hours a day. It's nice to be retired. Hing in there.

I just started simply piano. I thought it would only have you learn very artificially. Like the app does the actual playing. But it actually does a good job letting you practice as much as you need to to actually learn the lesson. I am having a much easier time learning chords as I simply go through each lesson as often as I need to, not necessarily get 100% as my piano isn’t perfectly tuned and I “miss notes” that I actually get. But the point for me is to gain the muscle memory. When I feel burned out I call it a day. And it is remarkable how seemingly easy it is the following day. I have been practicing 30 minutes first thing in the morning and 30+ minutes in the evening so I can take advantage of sleep learning on both ends.

No further advice that sounds all really good. If you can, a teacher is already really helpful to get to the next step, you just have to find one that is open tot the whole app idea. Apart from that watching KZbin videos is a good idea. If I find the time I can make a short video about some tips my teacher gave me.

In my case it‘s rather simple. I have the iPad attached to the piano via USB cable and Apple Adapter and I plug the headphones into the piano. did you start learning scales and do any appergios any time while using the simply piano content? or no that was until later? The chord fingering must have been difficult for you to change with a teacher too huh? did you find that you had a lot of things you needed to correct because you didn't start with the fingering maybe as classical as proper? so finger skipping and all that was foreign to you ? Thanks solid progress I just feel from what I watched simply piano traps you into playing chords and songs with rymths , but you actually didn't start using arpeggios for a while. which is esentially how you learn to accompany on the piano, so i have been going through the same journey, but I have just been doing nothing but scales and arpeggios and the axis chord progressions. / youtube/
@FlorianRachor1
@FlorianRachor1 2 жыл бұрын
Alright, so one by one. No I didn't start with scales and appreggios, those came later. But I never focused on those, I draw more personal value from playing music instead of technical excercises. I do warm up with 5-10min of that though every time. Simply Piano acutally teaches you proper fingering for everything, it missed the mark though on bringing home how important it is to stick to that. I saw people covering the fingering in the app because they thought it's some kind clutch, not understanding the value of proper fingering. Don't know if that is really the fault of the app though.

Lovely progress!!! I took 2 years of keyboard in college and seriously forgot it all, my instrument was voice and keyboard did nothing for me other than reinforce some theory. My hands never agreed with each other. I failed my keyboard final but passed the class bc I was a decent student otherwise, but there was no way I’d be playing Bach as expected. I’m over 10yrs removed from college and I decided to start simply piano to see what it has to offer and am contemplating buying it for the year, as I’d like to accompany my husband (he plays guitar fantastically) with simple, fun songs. So far, playing with both hands via simply piano has already been much better than it was in college. My only concern is that I won’t associate what I read with the name of the chords I play. Would you say this app is helpful in reinforcing that aspect of learning? Can you play something by ear? Or with a simple chord chart? Because that is my goal.

With the teacher I focused on reading sheet music and musicality, while in SP in continued to practice the basics. This slowed down my progress in SP, but enhanced my playing overall. No way this progression is accurate. You were playing stuff at the 1 1/2 year mark that you can easily play in half the time and you were. That is exactly why people are saying no way.

I think it’s a bit realistic, although I got to the für elise lesson in about 5-6 weeks 🤷‍♂️ I think some of the skeptics genuinely think this is faked because they’re the type of people to go to expensive piano lessons once a week and do maybe 2 hrs of practice a week. Like no shit this guy’ll surpass them in less time..

Now upload a video of your progress with simply piano playing all 12 major scales ,all minor scales ,harmonic,melodic and natural minor scales and maybe even arpeggios with both hands and show the worth of simply piano
@FlorianRachor1
@FlorianRachor1 2 жыл бұрын
Putting too much emphasis on playing scales will make you an expert in playing scales, but not a good piano player. The worth of any piano course is in how good you can play actual music, not how well you play training exercises. If you value finger exercises over playing actual music, you will hinder you progress. Go ask you teacher if you don’t believe me.

@@FlorianRachor1 so do you know the difference of a harmonic minor scale and major scale , that will be a no then , so if your a good piano player then the tunes you are playing can you play them in any key , that will be a no , because you don’t know the basic theory this is what makes a good piano player not someone who can play a tune and doesn’t know the theory behind the tune they are playing, just pointing out the difference of a piano player and someone who knocks out a tune and really doesn’t know what they are playing there is your massive difference
@FlorianRachor1

@@del9936 That’s the thing, you really don’t know anything about my knowledge of music theory. Because it‘s completely irrelevant for my playing. If learning theory gives you enjoyment, do it as much as you feel like it. But stop making absurd requirements (knowing all major and minor scales is grade 5 ABRSM) and stop gatekeeping playing the piano. I‘m learning to play for fun, as do many people in my age.

@@FlorianRachor1 sorry if my comment offends it wasn’t intended to be that way fair play to you on playing for fun , in my opinion and experience you really need to master the theory to know what your doing with the instrument and in my experience when you can play scales arpeggios etc when going to play pieces it makes it incredibly easier to do so , my opinion simply piano doesn’t make you a pianist it does what it say on the tin shows you how to simply play tunes

@@del9936 I can tell you right now that I know my scales and theory, I was a music major and had to take 2yrs of keyboard, took 4 required years of theory, took composition and counterpoint classes, passed them ALL, and STILL suck at keyboard. 😂 You really have to love it to do anything with it of value, app or traditionally.

Hi, im very tempted but is simply piano a scam? Im not looking to be a professional, just to play for fun and show off to my friends.
@FlorianRachor1
@FlorianRachor1 3 жыл бұрын
What gave you the impression that it‘s a scam? It‘s a piano course that focuses on playing rather then teaching you a lot of music theory. Especially if you like pop music you will get a lot of value for your money. It‘s not perfect of course, but it‘s very good to keep you motivated and you will get quick results that will sound decent.

@@javedahad1033 Lot‘s of people have reservations regarding new technology, that‘s normal. My teacher quite liked the app, specifically that it kept me motivated to practice every day. As I already mentioned, it‘s not perfect, nothing is. More specifically, the app can‘t teach you musicality, so you have to make sure that you don‘t sound robotic. But there are a lot of resources that can help you with that, KZbin for example. Teachers are great, I started getting in person lessons after a year or so with Simply Piano. That enhanced the quality of my playing significantly, I‘m not going to play this down. But Simply Piano made me sit down every day and practice, even best case you will see your teacher only once a week, but he won‘t be there every day. Simply Piano is there every time you open the app. There are ups and downs to everything. One month of weekly lessons costs as much as two years of Simply Piano where I live. That‘s steep if you don‘t know if you are even going to stick with the piano. I could go on and on. Maybe a solid video idea to talk about that :D

I started to play piano like 3 weeks ago and now i´m thinking about an app to learn...is SP a good tool? Have anyone here tried out Skoove?
@FlorianRachor1
@FlorianRachor1 2 жыл бұрын
I really depends what your goals are. A tool is only as good as it's suited for the goal you want to achive. SP is more causal, and puts more focus on playing music instead of learning theory. It also has more pop music then classical (like 80/20). For me it was also a motivational tool, something that would keep me coming back to the piano. That was worth everything to me, to be honest. Since I have finished all the courses there, I have some trouble to stay motivated.

If you think this is „unbelievable progress“ I‘m actually quite happy, since I started in my 40ies. Regarding the hand position: As mentioned in the video, my parents play since forever, they showed me how to hold my hands. I find it actually quite natural.
