2 YEARS (in 7 minutes) -- TURNING AN OLD SCHOOL into OUR HOUSE

It’s been 2 years since we bought this 100-year-old school. Looking back at all the renovations and progress we’ve made feels a bit wild. It takes SO much energy to restore these old buildings, and we’ve learned so much already.
When we bought the school we were in NYC. Last year we spent a year living in Philadelphia for Sean’s work. Currently we’re living with our amazing parents with the toddlers, and it’s amazing being nearby and watching the final stages of this beautiful building become a home for our family.

I don't think I have ever passed an old brick school building without wondering why it hadn't been turned into an apartment house. Schools already have gyms, cafeterias, and auditoriums which could be turned into communal dining, workout areas, and community gathering places. It's cool to see people saving and utilizing these old buildings.

One of the old schools in my town was turned into condos the other was turned into a theater with a small restaurant in it. Also when our new hospital opened in 2015 they sold the old building and the developer turned it into senior and low income housing. I like when they use the buildings for something vs letting them rot.

Reuse for residential is often far more expensive than just blading it under and starting over. Between the EPA and ADA and fire regulations, you really need either a major government grant or a superprime location to make it work economically. As with tiny homes and container homes, what seems like an obvious solution usually isn’t quite so simple.

Some actually have been turned into apartments. I grew up in one in Hopewell NJ. It was a high school from 1880 to 1929. It was turned into an apartment building starting in the 30's and has been so ever since. It was very similar to the school in this video, except it's made of white stucco instead of brick and it's about twice the size of it. It has eight units, four on the bottom and four on the top.

@@immichaelwayne8285no it’s not. My dad’s a contractor and he gets paid peanuts and sometimes just breaks even once it’s all said and done on houses, due to Karen’s. There’s a lot of people he’s dealt with, that he ain’t paid near enough to deal with their stupid ends. Getting a license to build is hard to pass and expensive. And that was 20 years ago. Idk what it’s like now. So no, contractors that are honest don’t get paid enough.

You might consider an old church. Sadly, there are more and more of those where the congregation has dwindled and has to sell the church building. The church property might also be already zoned residential.

My daughter used to live in an old high school that was converted into apartments. The lockers were left in the hallway and her place came complete with a huge blackboard that everyone wrote on! I just discovered your site and am relieved to see that we are not the only folks with BIG ideas. You are doing a lovely job and you will love the results. Almost 20 years ago we bought a 4-story, 25 room abbey from the Catholic church here in Germany. We only had to replace 47 windows, but since the building a historical protected site we had to have custom wooden-framed windows made and installed. I laid over 1000 sq ft of oak flooring and my wife plastered all of the walls in the house! We have replaced the oil central heating system and had major repairs made to the roof. There are a number of videos about the work we did on our KZbin site. Good luck on your amazing endeavour.

I love the old giant double hung windows that were in schools. I remember the teacher walking from window to window with a long pole with a hook on the end, as she opened the upper windows. Still remember the sound as the windows were opened.

Hope the "school" is all the home you can imagine. Such a cool idea. One suggestion: I noticed what looked like corrugated pipe going in, possibly for downspout drainage? That type of drain piping is well known for clogging and/or collapsing. SCH-40 PVC piping, while more expensive, would be a much better solution. I've had mine for 15-20 years and it's never had an issue. Any leaves, etc. going through it simply washes out the end.

Pretty sure my grandfather went to the school and I recognize the family names of some others in the class pictures you showed. They raised 4 kids and make the most delicious wine. Their 3 year old grandson loves to “help” with harvest and anytime the tractors are in use!

My house is in a village of 800 and we think it was built in the 1850’s. We did not do the renovations as we are NOT handy. Plus, we moved in 6 weeks before Covid lockdown so we were happy to have everything settled.

Awesome video! I am in Northeastern Minnesota & I grew up in a house built on the foundation of an old mining community school - the Malta School in Sparta. My great grandfather bought the school in the 1950s & because it was a huge building, they tore down the main school structure & built the house on most of the foundation - you can see the outline of the old foundation in the yard next to the garage (it's about the size of a two stall garage & the underground fuel oil tank is buried in it). I grew up with the original chalkboards on the basement walls, we had old desks, the old hand washing sinks, etc. The boiler room was in what is now a garage. The old bell housing was our sandbox playhouse. Our yard is huge - the community skating rink was in our yard & it's probably the size of two or three blocks in town. We even had a huge section of pine trees & a huge garden next to the rink & two mobile homes at times. I have only seen one old photo of the school before it was made into the house. We actually have several old school buildings on the Iron Range that are for sale & several have been taken down in recent years. The school my grandma, her brother, my dad & his 4 sisters, my older brother & sister & I went to is supposed to be demolished in December - they took down part of it already. The smaller school my grandpa attended through 8th grade is another one that's been waiting for a buyer too. It's a beautiful building that's near my great grandparents farm about 25 miles from my parents house (my grandparents lived across from my parents & their yard was even bigger). I live a couple houses away from the high school I graduated from in 1990 & it will also come down soon. In the early 1900s, the various mining companies donated the funds to build huge brick & marble schools in most of the towns here on the Iron Range & many are vacant or gone because as the population started dropping 50 or so years ago, the school districts couldn't properly maintain a huge brick building (or multiple buildings) properly & they started to get worse as years went on. The schools started merging/consolidating before I was born 50+ years ago & that usually meant that buildings in one town were abandoned. I started school in Gilbert & we merged with Eveleth when I was in 9th grade in 1986 - they used buildings in both towns since, but Eveleth's old Junior High building sat vacant ever since until they demolished it a few years ago. Eveleth even closed their industrial arts building a couple decades ago & it recently came down (it was the first building my dad taught welding in). Eveleth -Gilbert merged with Virginia to create the new Rock Ridge district several years ago & it was cheaper to build 3 new buildings (a joint jr/sr high building & 2 elementary buildings) than to fix up a few of the 100+ year old buildings. Thankfully, the organizers included a deadline & funding to demolish the old unused buildings in the new school plans! It's sad to see them come down, but it was worse to see them sit vacant & crumble over decades. The state of Minnesota has been giving funds & incentives for the smaller outstate school districts to merge with nearby schools & build modern school buildings so every student in the state gets the same tools for education that the Twin Cities Metro area kids have. It's a great program, but it's controversial because people who graduated decades ago & haven't stepped foot in the old buildings for decades are very vocal about their sentimental connections. Unfortunately, the maintenance & refurbishment costs are barriers for any interested buyers of the old school buildings too. I am so glad that you are able to save your old school building! I am sure your community members are too! Good luck!

In 2015 my husband and I sold everything we owned, bought a derelict schoolhouse in rural northwestern ireland (online, without ever seeing it) and moved from NYC into a construction site…. Your school is ENORMOUS. The scale of your project is a hundred times the scale of ours - but I think we may have a lot of things in common. It’s changed everything in our lives, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s not for everyone, as ireland is so much more, and so much less than you would believe possible. Our schoolhouse was built in 1891, and is an old stone building which we gutted and redesigned into a very comfortable place to live. (Turns out we inadvertently bought a historic landmark building, but this is for another day - the Coracloon School House ) I wish you joy and success in bending your schoolhouse into a shape that will work well for your family. These old buildings were built to last the ages, but were designed as municipal buildings, and don’t surrender easily. With your high ceilings, the building will be cool in summer - but come winter? We have a big ceiling fan to blow the warm air down from the upper floor, back to the main living area. It makes a difference. - as the cost of our energy bills are the biggest expense we have. Be well, enjoy the chaos!

My childhood school in Deep Sourh was so much like this but much larger. It burned with a vengeance after school district and potential buyers had a back and forth about it. The latter wanted to create sr apts in it, exposing the old wood etc like you did, add gardens etc. as a nearby community has done. I am so excited to see a young family doing something like this! The amount of hard work is mind boggling. The dedication is Herculean. All worth it because of the humongous potential comfort of such a large space. My only suggestion would be to consider combining two of the three kids’ bedrooms in order to produce a “good” square footage since “young uns” like to spend time away from a rest of the family when they get to be a certain age. Great job and it’s only going to get more rewarding as you move ahead. 👍

In 1989 my parents moved us from cedar park,Texas to Holdenville, Oklahoma. We had a beautiful ranch style home they had built throughout the 80’s. Mom didn’t want a freeway behind the house so we moved to be near family. They bought the 1934 Children’s Hospital in Holdenville. It was an abandoned building at the time and had been used for various activities over the years from vandals to those who like to empty their bowels on private properties. This video brought back so many memories of tearing down plaster walls and scraping tile off hardwood floors. Eventually the almost 6,000 sq. ft. home was finished. Sadly, mom got sick with ms in the late 90’s and dads diabetes became too much for him. He died in 2016 and mom passed in in 2020. Alone in the hospital. My sister had been renovating the home and had just replaced all the windows and spent over 100 grand in remodeling when the house burned down. But she then bought the old Bank N.A. building and has turned that into her home now. There are so many beautiful abandoned buildings in rural America. Thank you for sharing your progress.

It had its start as a public school but has been a private Christian day school for many years now & still going strong. Your video was fascinating to see how you could change this into your home! There’s an old school in town here that’s been made into apartments .. it’s much smaller than this building, but the same energy that goes with these old buildings, schools and here, mills and factories from 100 years ago 😍 they are just incredible.. Before I even started watching, I knew it was in Indiana! My father went to a school like this in Shelbyville! Shelbyville was always our stopping point between assignments. My dad was a pilot in the Air Force and we called it home, my aunt and uncle still lived there. Indiana will always hold a very special place in my heart. Going to love watching your home grow. An old friend of mine moved into an old school in a small town in Minnesota but it was less than half the size of yours, and being a working artist, I'm sure he kept it very wabi-sabi... 😅 I especially loved the background music -- had a very Blood Sweat And Tears, "Owl And The Pussycat" movie soundtrack vibe... Very interesting adventure you are undertaking. I like it. Once complete is should be a very nice home. This reminds me of my home that I restored in New Mexico. It was an old pueblo style Inn built in the late 1800s (Circa 1885-1890). It's walls were 12"x18" adobe brick with stucco. The floors were pecan wood, stair case black walnut. The kitchen was in a separate building. A lot of the stucco inside had fallen off the walls and the adobe block exposed. I left it that way as a design element. It took me a total of five years to complete the restoration since I did all the work myself. I was a licensed contractor at that time. The building has an 8900 sq ft. foot print. Then tack on another 4500 sq. ft on a second floor. The one thing I think you will encounter are the heating and cooling expenses for the building you have. They are gonna be big considering today's fuel and electric prices. However, I don't know what you have planned for that equipment. So, you could be OK if you went the right route picking out the best equipment for the task. So far so good for you. It looks nice.

Guy in northern Indiana has remodeled an old school near Mishawaka and turned one of the old classrooms into a rec room, set up like an old bar to watch football and other sports on a large screen, and entertaining friends. Really cool place to hang out

I always wanted to restore and live in an old firehouse. Or even an old catholic church. I am 54 and there are so many old boarded up catholic churches in the KC area. Some have been boarded up since I was a little kid. I drive by these massive stone buildings and can just imagine restoring one to live in.

I went to Franklin College, 1996-2000. It was the only college I applied to because when I visited it, I fell in love with the town and the kindness of the people.

Having done a couple of major rehabs and built an entire house, I can tell you this is a major undertaking, and I will NEVER do it again. We spent 10 yrs. in a 2 bdrm. 12x70 mobile home that we paid $200 for, which will tell you something about the condition of it. Not a typo: $200 dollars. That was with 2 adults, 2 little kids, and 3 inddoor cats. One of which drug in a garter snake one day and simply turned it loose in the hall. What fun! I also found little green tree frogs that came in through holes around the plumbing, and showed up tangled in dust bunnies. Dribbling water over them and untangling the fuzz at 1 a.m. is a real experience. Moving into the house, finally, was such a wonderful shock to the system.

Perry NY nas converted the old Elementary School into a combination of apartments in the upstairs rooms and commercial small businesses in first floor. I attended a course in Microsoft Office andwas a ' paid ' volunteer at a local historical society for two years. I was one of two people who was familiar with computers. (I'd had a repurposed computer business for 4years) I wrote instruction manuals for using various equipment for the less familiar coworkers. Cataloging artifacts and identifying cemetery plots in a 200 year old cemetary. And every plot in the village by street from an 100 year old map. Lots of fun . Also did historical tours of facility.
