When I was a kid I mourned for Nemo because I looked up to him; a genius ahead of his time who created a wonderful vessel to pierce the dark unknowns of the ocean depths. Now that I'm older I still mourn for him; but now it's because of how his life went. A brilliant man who was turned vengeful by tragedy, turning his wonders into weapons, and in the end was destroyed by it. What might Nemo have done for the world had life gone differently for him? We may never know, and even though it's a fictional world, it still breaks my heart.

This was one of my favorite childhood films. Nemos death, and his wonderful submarine that was half gothic half steampunk, slowly slipping away as the island rips itself apart in a fiery cataclysm, with James Masons voiceover, a prophetic message about a future world being ready for the technological might and wonders he wielded but had contemptuously hid from the world, was so moving, and moves me still.

At least in the books he gets some kind of good ending. He doesn't die in 20 000 leagues under the sea and reappears in the mysterious island (which is the one that blows up in the movie), where he helps the protagonists multiple times. He then dies of old age and at peace

Love this movie, and always felt so depressed at the ending. The movie took place in 1868. Nemo was disgusted by the horrors of the 19th century. He had no idea of the new atrocities that were just waiting a few decades away with World War I and World War II. That's a scary thought, if those idiots in Europe had gotten a hold of Nemo's technology and used it in World War I the death tolls would be catastrophic! Such wasted talent in Captain Nemo's genius. But he knew the outside world would pervert his technology for their own greed and hate. Nemo saved millions by making sure those bastards on those war ships did not leave the island with the technology.

@Jim Vincent - Not necessarily. The nuclear arms race between the US and Soviet Union is what prevented World War 3. It is a frightening thought. And it takes a special kind of person to inspire such loyalty in his crew. It is likely they saw it as following their captain (the man who freed them from slavery and ensured their survival) wherever he went, including the next life. It should be noted, that no nuclear power plant can blow up like that, even the earliest ones.

Nemo blew up the island of Vulcania with a nuclear bomb or something of equal destructive force. In the movie it is suggested that Nemo got the technology to tap into the power of the atom and that the Nautilus was in fact a submarine with a nuclear reactor. Now if you know that you have technology like that in your homebase as well, which is currently surrounded by warships that attempt to storm the island, wouldn't you blow up the reactors in the base as well? Given, getting shot in the back with a lethal wound was not part of Nemo's plan, nor was the destruction of the Nautilus, but Nemo and his men knew one thing for sure: If the Nautilus, the island of Vulcania or even a member of the Nautilus crew would fall into the hands of these 'civilized' nations that send warships to come and take their stuff, it would mean the end of the world as mankind would know it.

@@VariusMayhem It should also be noted that this film was made at the height of the era when any number of films were being made to show what could happen if nuclear power was misused. Jimmy Kielbasa's Voice in Heaven of Light: There really is hope for the future. When my whole world must be ready for my whole new life, my memories in the past can take me back to the Parade of the Stars to join the cast members and the Disney Park guests, dance with the Disney Stars and don tutus, animal hats and star capes in the Parade of the Stars at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California for all five years from 2000 to 2005 by a couple times in days and years again and again and again and the Wave Swingers for starting with five of them in Whirligig in Spassburg at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, Texas for all four years from 1993 to 1996, the Slingshot and now the Wave Swinger in the Fiesta Village at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California for all thirteen years from 1997 to 2009, the Wave Swinger at Santa Clara County Fair by Butler Amusements, Inc. in San Jose, California for all four years from 2000 to 2003 and Alameda County Fair by Butler Amusements, Inc. in Pleasanton, California for all eight years from 2000 to 2007, Celebration Swings in Celebration Plaza at Paramount's Great America and then Great America and now California's Great America in Santa Clara, California for all thirteen years from 2001 to 2013, even Whirligig in Yankee Harbor at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois for all twelve years from 1998 to 2009, as long as God of Heaven of Light can take me back home to San Jose, California only back in eighteen years to see my sister Kim again, as all this possibly will someday come back to the past...in God's good time.
