I have been a custom painter for 30+ years. The longest that I've spent on a cut and buff was 100+ hours on a Chevy Vega. I painted it in single stage and it turned out like glass. The car competed (and won) in the I.S.C.A.

single stage cuts so nice . Not used much these days due to protection issues
@DXJP4 жыл бұрын
Christopher Jones no most painters have no clue how to use it. They rely on clear completely oblivious to how easy single stage jobs are. Obviously your not going to get a single stage candy or a brilliant metallic, but a solid color in single will have as much if not more depth and clarity as a Bc/cc. Also tremendously easier to repair.
@JAMESWUERTELE4 жыл бұрын
Do you have to polish a single stage a lot through it’s life?
@DXJP4 жыл бұрын
James Wuertele no of its an enamel or urethane. Both will hold their gloss for a long long time. Remember all cars were painted this way. Look at some of the garage find cars. They buff up really nice. Also look at old cars they keep the patina on. That paint is 50+ years old on some of these. We have always had a clear coat, but back in the day they would yellow or crack as they were not UV stable as today’s clears. One more point to make is most manufacturers use water base paint. They need to be clear coated to produce a shine. This is for environmental reasons. There was nothing wrong with the old technology.

I'm a DIY home painter and I just painted my Civic about a month back. I can't tell you how glad I am that I put on 3 coats of a very high solids 'soft' clear it buffs like butter even after a year. My buffing technique and products took awhile to dial in and I had to re wet-sand some areas. I'm going 2000 grit now and straight to buff it's working well with the soft clear.

Have sanded cars from 1500 grit dry paper and then wet sand 1000, 2000 and 3000 grit before starting the machine for a 4-stage polishing. And of course, it takes time. In some cases I would rather use double wool pad stages method instead. 6-step polishing. Congratulations on a stellar job well done. It takes time and it's worth it.

Excellent job. The biggest compliment that I could give you is that you remind me of myself. You could have stopped and do less work and perhaps your customer would have been satisfied. Fortunately you wanted it to turn out the way you saw it and put in the work to get it like that. I'm the same way when I'm working on things. Nothing close to what you're doing I am speaking of when I'm working on an engine or doing repairs in my home. When I work on my car and if I have to take 10 things off just take it to the broken part. I'm going to spend the extra money and replace those 10 things. I did that with my boat. Since the previous owner never did any real maintenance on the engine I took everything off and replaced it. That's just how I am and I could see that in you. I love watching your videos one day I will go out and try some of the techniques that you use and see how good I could get one of my cars to look good. I'm glad you shared this and I look forward to your next video.

@@ChicagoAutoPros you know there's an old saying that you get what you pay for. I do not mind paying for quality. Here is a quick example of this. At my previous home I lived there for 23 years and I was stuck with the same cable company that just was God awful. 14 years ago in 2006 I moved into a completely different neighborhood and at first had the same cable company. A few months later I found out that Verizon has a TV package and internet called Verizon FiOS. I had a 30-day trial and if I wasn't happy they would come back and pick up all of their equipment. The next day we were so satisfied just less than 12 hours of having them I returned all the cable company equipment. Verizon FiOS is well over $100 more every month compared to the cable company. I pay for quality. Trust me my friend you have a excellent service that you are giving your customers. I cannot remember when but I know it was within the last two weeks that you had did either it was a Ferrari or Lamborghini but anyway you were showing how bad the paint was on this exotic car. The way it looked when you were done blew my mind. You would think spending that kind of money on that kind of car that you would not have to do what you did. I love seeing those examples when you point out how bad the factory messed up. Cannot wait to see what you tackle next. I would love to see you do a Harley. A few years back when I had taken mine in for warranty work they had some idiot who washed and waxed my bike and now it has swirl marks across the tank that I just cannot get out. I'm not sure if you guys do bikes or not. Again thank you for sharing your videos I'm a big fan of yours.

Did it over the weekend - 17 hours on my son's Ford Fusion. It spent its first winter in Chicago after being here in Florida for 5 years. You'll see it when it comes in for maintenance washes there. But I didn't even attempt to get the deep scratches out. He doesn't care and he paid for it, so... But it has Dr. Beasley's 1201 on everything but the rims, which are lousy with curb rash. So don't judge all my details by that one. I did what I could within the parameters he gave me.

Not the longest project overall but the longest project on a single panel is 25+hrs on only a hood. It was carbon fiber and the clear coat was VERY hard and thick but had very deep chemical etching all over the hood. I had to wetsand it down with 120grit till the etching was cut out! Making a pass, cleaning, inspecting to see if the spotting was gone....made about 15 passes like that before the spotting was cut out. Then backed out with 240, 400, 800, 1200, 2000, 3000, compound, glaze, ceramic coat. Turned out awesome.
@MrFlintmica4 жыл бұрын
Some of that “texture” is actually dieback. Painting metal flake requires a shit ton of clear. You have to bury those flakes and typically I like to sand it after it’s set a few days and then clear it again. Pretty typical for it to dieback even after doing that. It’s also super hard because it was probably a cheaper universal clear. There’s only a handful of clear coats available that polish super nice after it’s been set for more than a week. A ton of them get harder than shit and it’s almost impossible to finish down super fine. This is also why we bodyshop guys use rotary buffers lol.

Man! Just watching you guys put that amount of work on that beautiful car got me tired. But the results were truly stunning! 👍 Notice car had California plates. Wonder if the owner brought his beauty from Cali to Chicago Auto Pros just to have her done. It won't surprise me if he did you guys are that good.

Joe A thank for the kind words. The car was originally from california, but the client does live in Chicago now.

Great job guys. But if it was up to me I’d add extra candy layers to doors, cause after such a finishing job it became more noticeable that both doors are more on the weak side. Sorry I had to get it out. I love your shop, I kind of miss my shop I sold on mid 90’s. 😩
