I'm a detail shop manager at a Toyota dealership. We don't normally do wet or dry sanding. But if we do it's prep for ceramic coating. This is the video I recommend to my guys to watch to get the basic feel of wet sanding. The rest of my training I demonstrat on old wholesale cars. Lol

I finally got my dream job. Kinda.. I'm an industrial powder coater and liquid painter. We do lots of big commercial vehicles such as combines, field sprayers, grain bins trunking, etc. We've also been taking in a lot of car parts. My foreman just completely fixed the body on one of our office employees cars. I've been watching him as he works and asking questions to learn more. The car came out beautifully! Better than 2022 cars and trucks right off the lot. I feel like I need to take more time to learn about the more intricate parts of painting. It's been a life saver. I've been dealing with a lot lately and getting suited up and masked with a paint gun in my hand has alleviated a lot of stress. I'm hoping that I learn quick enough to do more of the intricate jobs like my foreman gets to do. As for now, I'll finish my 97 cvt challenger "terra gator" row sprayer and attempt to use the information gathered from this video on it. I hope it comes out good! The crew and I have 112 hours of labor on this beast and we're just now getting to the primer.

Thanks for this video. I had a car which had Adams "paint sealant" put on the door with the result that there was a chalky white film which looked terrible. Compound didn't touch it so I gritted my teeth, got a sanding block and started with 1000 grit paper and a hose. White stuff came off with the water, after 2 passes I switched to 2000 grit, then 2500. Less white stuff but paint looked terrible. Then compound, 2 passes, then polish, 2 passes. Door looks infinitely better, finished it off with a coating of carnuba wax. Your video gave me the confidence that there was a chance the paint wouldn't be destroyed, and to be honest I had nothing to lose anyway. Now car is back to happy! 3 coffees bought.

I've found your videos to be first class and just enough information to give confidence to do this work myself. I'm a used car dealer and hardly wet sand any paint - I use a cut/polish type product (with bad paint or deep scratches Farecla G3) on an orange foam pad & remove swirls/spider web/hologram stuff using Farecla G10 or 3M Ultrafine with a black foam pad. The machine I use is not DA just orbital. Autoglym has been my "go-to" polish of choice for many years. In fact - I have found it so good it has covered many of my errors (maybe fillers or special optical effects in the polish??). I can get a good level of shine back on all colours... I'm tempted to have a go at some wet sanding now. I don't have airlines and so electrical powered equipment is my route. In the future I'd like to try more detailed approach to the better quality cars that I sell & buy a DA sander/polisher and use a foam backing pad. In your video here - I would have loved to have seen what results my approach would have gained on the right side of that panel..... what you did is obvious - but also looks like a hint of magic :) I guess that's experience - that hidden factor! In all.... THANK YOU for your support - even though you didnt know you were!!! :)

Sandro, Another great video! I guess that the determination to wet sand vs. compound depends on a couple of things: the depth of the imperfections, the degree of defect removal desired, the time you have to work this, and the amount of money the customer has. From my experience, always use the least aggressive method first, then gradually work your way to wet sanding. Keep up the good work!

Detailed, Comprehensive, Well thought out, well shot and well executed educational video. Your approach to car detailing and your attention to detail is noted and greatly appreciated. I have a question for you. Let's say that you had a few large rock chips or LOTS of small rock chips on that panel in addition to all the scratches and swirls. Would you use touch up paint and fill in those rock chips before or after wet sanding or before or after compounding? Let's say your touch paint is from the manufacturer and it comes with clear coat too. When would you apply that. This is one question that I've never seen addressed during these kinds of informative vides. I look forward to your response. THANKS in advance.

I guess personally I really like SIA disks as I seem to largely avoid pigtails and I don’t tend to dry sand much so I don’t need or want the extraction holes found in many other brands, and the integrated foam in the Sia’s also tends to be more forgiving to work with. The plastic panels or trims I’d be sanding are also painted/clear coated - unless it’s something like an older plastic headlight- and I’d generally use the same discs. Thanks!
