Id say that due to the very clear intent for replayability there's an expectation most people would at least, generally, do two playthroughs. Making it a six hour game at the least. I would expect only a very rare weirdo or to stop at 3 hours. Or just someone who doesn't like it.

I just came here to the comments to say that myself. Personally, I liked Book of Hours much better than Slay the Princess, as charming as that game was. The combination of free form furniture and book organization paired with the card mechanics felt pretty original to me, and the themes of the different rooms in the castle were just a joy to unlock and discover each time. I'm not really big on history, but found myself surprisingly invested in discovering the history of Hush House. Also, it has the cutest snek I've ever seen in a game. Maybe Adam can play it when the first DLC hits.

This video convinced me to play void stranger, and I am *very* glad I did because it's incredible! A solid, emotional story, satisfying puzzles, overarching mysteries you only really start to uncover after a few playthroughs, and tons of moments that made me go "Wait, I could've done that the whole time?". The first few trips through the void are slow and difficult, each floor passed is hard-won, but eventually you learn secret shortcuts and find secret items and uncover hidden game mechanics and by the end, rocketing to the bottom of the void is fast and satisfying, even once you already know the answers to the normal puzzles.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty disappointed with the inclusion of both Chants of Sennaar and Slay the Princess. Not because they're bad games or anything like that, in fact, it's because of how good they are. They're both so good, that they are almost certainly in the top ten most popular indie titles this year. Any one that's into gaming enough to watch one of your videos has almost certainly heard of both. I know this is just a single commenter's opinion, but I really feel like the top 3 should be for titles that a lot more people haven't heard of/played (something that hit's especially hard with my very not well known Void Stranger showing up just before the top 3). This argument also applies to Dredge, but it's not as impactful considering it's not in the top 3. Also, since I'm leaving a comment anyways, just wanna say I'm a big fan of the work that you do, always pleasantly surprised by the consistent increase in quality. Your end of video segments are also some of the best on KZbin, just for giving smaller creators the credit they deserve.
@simba6666610 ай бұрын
apart from almost being certain he said he didn't rank them in any particular order(so rather than top 3 it would be just last 3 games showcased though i didn't finish watching the video yet) i agree with your points, and actually think Dredge being almost as big as pizza tower is actually more impactful that it's in this list rather than some lesser known game

Its really difficult for ne to reconcile my opinion of Starfield, and the online opinion of Starfield. The things people bring up that they dont like, are often the things that I like most about it. Maybe its just that I've always fantasized about exploring the emptiness of space, and know that Starfield is likely the closest I'll get to doing so, now that I'm a little too old to still have hope I'll actually get to do it. I dunno, I wouldn't say that it exceeded my expectations, but it certainly met them all for me

I had a similar experience. In my case, the game was everything I expected and more, and had great fun with it. But I seem to be in the minority, and I'm not completely sure why. One game from this year I loved and saw no one ever talk about was Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society. Its a turn based dungeon crawler similar to etrian odyssey by the Disgaea devs and its got some of the most strategic depth in a turn based rpg Ive seen in awhile while also having an amazing story. Its the second game in the Labyrinth series, but playing the first game Labyrinth of Refrain is not required at all.

Chants of Sennaar was the biggest hit for me this year. Amazing that they managed to make all the languages unique enough to make all the sections interesting, but similar enough to support the narrative.

Void stranger was my favorite game this year, glad you mentioned it!

Coming back to say thank you for the Pseudoregalia recommendation! 6 hours in and not done yet, but the movement has been so fun and inspiring! (if also frustrating at times lol)

Just wanted to chime in about Roboquest being amazing! My favorite thing about it that you didn’t mention is that it’s co-op :’) I’ve had so much fun playing it with my husband. The art style and robot designs are super charming, too!

Roboquest is coop? Thanks for mentioning it.

only co-op?

Fun fact about Void Stranger: this is a sequel to a shmup. Talk about a genre jump. (Seriously so glad you recommended it, literally picked it up the day of and have been blown away by its depth. SE does not disappoint)

Against the Storm was absolutely fantastic. I don't recommend it only for city builder fans, I'd also greatly recommend it for fans of stuff like Slay the Spire

Will be giving it a go since it is on GamePass

I'm honestly just glad that Gravity Circuit is on your list, it is such a great game and I've been thinking it wouldn't get the recognition it deserved for a long time because of how many massive games released in 2023. I haven't gotten around to playing most of these games, I've had my eyes on several of them but some of them, like Your Only Move is Hustle, I wasn't sure about, but it seems like a lot of people loved it so I'll add it to the list of games to pick up when I get the chance.

Your explanation for slay the princess is the best advertisement I've ever seen for a game. It's not even my kind of game generally, but I'm going to get it and try it, because your segment on it was so damn interesting.

How you nailed the voice acting, personnality, and script writing was incredible ! It was like the game was playing by itself. Slay the princess, a real game of choice, and contemplation. Maybe, this game exist because of the Stanley parabole. This, is the futur of video game i saw through the walking dead telltale series.

It's been confirmed that in the style and tone of the dialogue in the game, the devs took a lot of inspiration from Disco Elysium (which, while less narratively branching, is just as deep and entertaining in terms of writing (I think, I haven't actually played DE)).

Thank you for shedding the light on awesome games that need more love ❤. Saw some Cocoon gameplay at the start and thought it would get a mention. I finished and reviewed it because it was my favorite puzzle game in quite sometime. Also just finished Jusant and I am reviewing it.. Level design is some of the best and the constant introduction of new mechanics keeps it fresh! I hope we see a sequel.

I have a personal grudge against Cassete beasts. I LOVED Lenna's Inception. And then the .1 patch with the casest beast hint got added, adding BRUTALLY HARD mini bosses in the middle of levels, often even the starting level. Moved the one heart challenge from hard, but possible, to FOREVER OUT OF REACH. I've had to many runs end because I'd stumble into a room, two monsters would randomly merge, and now I'm fighting a superboss that can one hit kill me.

I was surprised not to find in Stars and Time here. It's legit become one of my favourite games of all time, it explores the concept of a timeloop in some very neat ways in how deeply it affects our protagonist, and its story has some extremely hard hitting beats. The combat is standard RPG with a neat rock-paper-scissors twist, but it does its job and i think even furthers the feeling of endless repetitions. Go play it, it's absolutely worth your time.

I know not everyone follows the same creators, but about the only ones that I hadn't heard of before this video were Mosa Lina and South Scrimshaw. Maybe I'm just super keyed in, or something...

Have some and am intrigued on others. To note on two I've played, something Against the Storm does that I would love to see more utilized in other city builders is leaning into the idea of different races/species with different needs/wants, and especially something more threatening than "defend against completely generic raiders" I want a fantasy city builder that makes me feel like I'm keeping a D&D town prosperous despite the threat of various monsters and monstrous humanoids. And then for Laika, it is most certainly for mature audiences only, but from the taste I got in the demo, it seems to handle the subject matter respectfully.
