What a great starting point! I bought my farm of 20 acres without any fence and no barns. I had to do extensive renovation on the house too. Fencing is expensive, very expensive oh yea, I need a barn or two too! and I guess underground water lines to water the animals no to mention the cost of animals and their feed. I’ll stop there.
@HappyBurrowHomestead2 жыл бұрын
It was definitely a blessing to have some of that done already! It sure can get expensive quick! Thanks so much for watching!

Welcome to the adventure! My wife and I moved on to our twenty ,wooded, undeveloped, acres in Michigan in 2017. If I might suggest something, have a look at Greg Judy's work with managed grazing of cattle. It dramatically improves pasture quality ;)

Thank you for the suggestion! We would really love to improve our land as naturally as possible! We will definitely check out Greg Judy! Thank you!

Thanks for sharing! Lovely place! May I ask - 5.30 in Why did you get rid of the honey suckle completely? It's beautiful. It smells great. It attracts insects. Butterfies love them Bees - I think do. Insects are good for birds etc etc and our ecosystem. Also you have enough space to allow some things to exist purely for its' beauty ! ❤️🙏
@HappyBurrowHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! As to the honeysuckle, it’s very invasive and blocks a lot of the sunlight where it is on the hillside. We are allowing it to grow wild in other areas of our property for all the reasons you mentioned though!
@mio.giardino2 жыл бұрын
Love your land, so beautiful! The bank barn 💕 so much covered space will be so useful! I’m sure you’ve been told this before but letting cows near/in the stream area will rip up the banks.
@HappyBurrowHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That’s a really good point! I would like to retain the banks but find a way to use up the grassy area. Maybe a smaller animal?
@mio.giardino2 жыл бұрын
@@HappyBurrowHomestead I’d go as big as chicken or ducks? I’d look at where the water is coming from and going to, you want to be a good stream neighbour. If you want to use the water, perhaps a solar pump to lift it up into a trough that overflows back into the stream? On the same thought, pumping a small amount, slowly, into IBC totes to use if the garden needs it during a dry spell?
@HappyBurrowHomestead2 жыл бұрын
@@mio.giardino those are great ideas! I’d love to use the water for gardens! I think I see a project in our future! Thank you for the suggestions!

You have a beautiful flock of chickens. What breeds do you have and what hatchery do you purchase your chicks from?
@HappyBurrowHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Our current layers are Rhode Island Red, ISA brown, leghorn and Wyandottes. They are all from Rural King (a local farm store). Our “little” chickens, that haven’t started laying yet are mostly barred rock. There are a few that we aren’t sure of their breeds yet. Those were all from a local school that hatched them out for their kindergarten class and they came from a 4H group. And our meat birds we order from McMurray Hatchery. We did Cornish cross last year and this year we will do them again and also red broilers.
@@HappyBurrowHomestead Very beautiful family flock. I have been away from rural life and some of the breeds I knew but not all. They sure get along well together. I live in south suburbs of Chicago and am in the process of looking for rural property. Still have many family members and friends that farm or have homesteads in the country.

That was a very nice tour with potential more livestock Etc. It appears to be hilly land. Are you in the southern part of Indiana?
@HappyBurrowHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! We are very excited to add more livestock in the near future! I think the hilly land is kind of unique to our property. We are more north and it’s mostly flat in the surrounding area. 😀
