Hot hands warmers in socks make a huge difference. My daughter's rugby team use them in their boots during winter games. Another tip. On long distance hikes a tube of ibuprofen gel is not only good for applying at the end of the day on aching joints it is also flammable, so a small amount on some dry twigs or bark will create an instant fire lighter.

I'm a big fan of using grosgrain loops (nylon ribbon 3/4") on tents, my bivy, etc... My sleeping bag used to slide out the bottom of my tarptent. Sew some grosgrain loops at the shoulder of your bag and then run some para cord to a tent stake to keep your bag from sliding downhill.

It is a really good idea if you want to keep the weight down but personally I take a bivvy bag.I’ve suffered a collapse in the middle of the night and didn’t have a bivvy,if I had the bivvy with me I would have just laid there until morning but I had to bail in some really bad weather.i will never be without a bivvy after that.

Excellent tips. Thank you. Teaching granny to suck eggs saying originated back in the 1700's when raw eggs were seen as being a good thing to eat (?). Back then someone's granny would have been adept at making a small hole in the top and bottom of a fresh egg and then sucking the contents out. The small hole idea was both to make the egg enjoyment (?!) last a long time and also so the empty shell could be decorated and used as an Easter egg.

Regarding shoe laces... Years ago I bought 3mm elastic cord and use that like a normal lace, tying it with the usual bow double knot. I test it for a few days to make sure the tensions is correct, that the show is tight enough when walking/running ect and once I am happy and confident its correct I just superglue the knot. This means that the shoes/boots are comfortable and secure while the elastic cord allows enough give when stretched that I can pull my footwear off easily.

Even simpler with the shoe lace knot; when you're come to the point where you made the loop, and you take the other cord around the "neck" of the loop, just go around it a second time. This adds more friction, making nearly any shoelace bite/grip much better, still remains quick-release on both ends, AND dosent require to shift your hands at any point. It's simple and very, very effective.

My lifesaver when camping, especially in wet weather, is to always have some talcum powder. Totally dries you your clammy skin and sorts your feet right out!! "Storm Bovril?" Keep your tin cup on the outside of your bag, the you can use to collect a cupful for a warm snack as you go along. I love seeing the muddy, yellow creature, leaping about in the woods behind you. I also had an equally well-trained , daft yellow dog. We called him by his Indigenous name, " the Stomach that Walks". The best way to bond with your dog, is to take him camping. Good video mate.

To avoid having to use a long spoon or fork for camping meals, does anyone else flip the pouch upside down before opening it to get the bits out of the bottom, roll the bottom like a toothpaste tube, flip the pouch right side up, and keep rolling the pouch up as the food is being emptied? Even a small collapsible spoon would work because eventually the pouch will be rolled all the way to the top. One good lick of the spoon on the last bite eliminates any cleaning and the empty pouch can be resealed to store odd bits of garbage as well. 😬

I recognise most of these tips and I do a lot of them. I use waterproof socks instead of zip bags though - more comfy and can double as real socks if necessary. My extra tip is to bring a survival bag and use it as a tent footprint/vestibule groundsheet. They are hard-wearing and can also be used as an emergency shelter at lunch stops - and even as a survival bag if the worst happens!

Some interesting tips, especially the one about putting a trash bag over the sleeping bag foot as that always seems to get damp regardless of condensation in the tent. The idea of putting hand or toe warmers inside one's sleeping bag in winter is a tempting one, but I wonder what, if any risks there might be in doing so. The warning label (on mine) specifically says not to sleep with them. Some further research produced the following warning: "If the warmers are punctured or damaged, they could potentially cause a fire if they come into contact with combustible materials like paper, clothing, or other easily combustible materials. Expired or defective hand warmers can increase the risk of fire. Always check the expiration date and inspect the product before use." I'm sure the risk is slight, but I don't think I'll be putting chemical warmers inside my sleeping bag!

Some nice tips. Mandatory dry bag with warm thermals, in/after rainy hikes, indeed. (Also made me wonder if you can steam wet socks dry overnight, with a hand warmer inside a zip lock bag, leaving it open a bit). My tips would be a plastic soda bottle cap, to push tent pegs in more easy and save your hand palm/gloves. I keep one in every peg bag. And second, bring the smallest tin of vaseline for chafed skin or dry lips, or when it's bitter cold. Weighs only like 20 grams.

I use the cap from an empty sun lotion bottle as a ‘peg pusher’. Weighs almost nothing and a bit deeper than a pop bottle cap, so less likely to slip in use and more round edged in the hand. Works great and a zero-cost recycling bonus. 😊

Good tips there, use pretty much all of them too! The best has to be ear plugs defo game changer 👌 don’t rate the foam ones tho they slip out, I invested in some little soft rubber ones from eBay absolutely awesome wash them and they come in a little box too 🙌

I have a length of duct tape wrapped around the handle of one of my ice axes that I put there back in 2002 or thereabouts. It was still good last time I checked it, and it's lived in the tropics for a fair chunk of the time since then. (Strange place to have an ice axe, I know!)

Boot laces... tie it as a looped Reef Knot, I've never had them come undone in 50 years of using it. You're tying a granny knot, they slip.

I get what you say about storm caping yes it can happen but going deliberately into danger is a statistical thing. Some will survive but eventually some tents blow over and people risk hypothermia it will become very unpopular to be associated with death on a hill side.

As a dog owner, I took to using poo bags (plant-based) to keep my camp socks dry in wet shoes, after getting the idea from Hazey.

Great idea mate! Dog owners have loads of them kicking about but the ones we use are a bit flimsy for multi day hiking use

Brilliant tips, all gleaned from years spent actually doing it. KZbin is so stuffed with people schilling for high end kit manufacturers, who tell you all you need to go hiking is £3000 worth of kit, this is a refreshing change. Oh, and anyone who deliberately goes out in a storm just to get clicks should be forced to sit in a dark, windowless room and made to watch someone set fire to their Durston Xmid.
