Not to be _that_ guy, as this is a great list of games, but November 21, 1990 was the SNES/SFC's release date in Japan. We got the Super Nintendo on August 23, 1991 here in North America, eight months later. Startropics, Kabuki Quantum Fighter, The Krion Conquest, Metal Storm, Princess Tomato and the Salad Kingdom, Kiwi Kraze, Totally Rad, Whomp 'Em, Faria: A World of Mystery and Danger, and [possibly] the Lone Ranger (its exact date isn't known other than being Aug. '91), all great late-in-life NES releases, but still released before the SNES did here.

I remember in the SUPER NINTENDO documentary parents wondering, "Why the hell would I go buy this when my kid can't play the Nintendo games on it that we just bought?" Well, Nintendo didn't abandon you. They remained faithful to the system until the end.

Some great NES games from that time that you didn’t mention were MC Kids, Darkwing Duck, Yoshi, Yoshi’s Cookie, Mega Man 4, 5 and 6, and probably the best one of all: Kirby’s Adventure.

So many hidden gems came out in that post-1991 NES era when all the excitement and coverage had moved to the SNES. But at that point, developers had gotten a really good understanding of what the NES could do and, the good ones, leveraged that for some fantastic games. The *Super Famicom* came out in Japan in 1990. The Super NES proper was released in August of 1991.

Lots of great games on this list, Kick Master in particular is one I really enjoy. But some other post-SNES releases for the NES that were very good: Mega Man 4-6, Jetsons, Dragon Warrior IV (though Quest IV debuted in Japan before the SFC), Panic Restaurant, Adventure Island 3, Adventures of Lolo 3, Bucky O Hare, Fire N Ice, Gargoyle's Quest 2, TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project, and of course Kirby's Adventure.

That Title Screen for the Flintstones made me think of those flintstones sherbert push pops in the 90s. A lot of these later Nes games, are the ones that have held up the best. Lot of fond memories with Shatterhand. As hard as it is, it does play fair and you can always experiment with different power ups. Dragon Fighter does not hold up, but it was used as the main inspiration for Shovel Knights Art. Great Video.

That is not the US release date, It is the Japanese release date. I know, because I remember getting it for Christmas in 1991, right after it came out. And I also specifically remember that Star Tropics was released before it. And regarding Kiwi Kraze, it was already out even before the wrong release date for the SNES. I remember, because I played it as part of a contest held in May 1990, so this game was out in the US at least 15 months before the SNES. Whomp Em was also played as part of the same contest, but not for my age bracket, so it also long precedes the SNES.

Fire N Ice came out in March 93 and remains a personal favorite. Battletoads/Double Dragon June 93, another gem. Zen The Intergalactic Ninja 93 as well; awesome year for hidden late gems on the NES!

I never really understood the argument of backwards compatibility. Did people not know you can hook multiple consoles to the same television? If you want to play old NES games, just have the NES hooked up so you can play them.

Didn't know many games here. Great video!!! Vice Project Doom is one of my favorite NES games. There's so much variation you'll never get bored playing it: platforming, shooting, driving... and also several different weapons, great graphics and tunes

I miss the kind of box art Princess Tomato has. You can tell someone hand-crafted physical miniatures, posed them, and took pictures with the correct lighting. Nowadays all they do is pose in-game models!

The NES version of Wario's Woods is a solid option as well. It's slightly different than the SNES version but a great puzzler.

In animal crossing for the game cube you could unlock a nes with wario woods and you could play the game with a second person in another controller port on the game cube. There were other games too but I don't think they were multiplayer.

I love Kabuki Quantum Fighter. Awesome Look, awesome Music and a tight Difficulty. It may be too hard when you play it the first Time but it´s definitely worth the try to master it.

Whomp 'Em was one of my favorite games as a kid. When I started collecting games from my childhood, Whomp 'Em was one game I had to get. Happy I have a boxed copy for myself. Love to break out out every now and then. Sadly, I have never been able to beat it. I have made it to the last level but wound up getting stuck in an endless bounce loop.

Sad story about the Flinstones game. Growing up, we were allowed to rent one NES game each week. My brother rented Flinstones and chipped away at it all week. It was hard but on the very last day, he'd made it to the end. The problem was, our mom was ready to leave, which meant we had to take the game back to the rental store. But my brother was on the last boss, so mom let him have a bit more time. We had a little stand for our TV in the bedroom, but the Nintendo was resting on the floor. And nearby, I was also on the floor, playing with my action figures over in the corner, 'cause watching my brother repeatedly try to beat the game was kind of boring. So finally, my brother was like, "Brian! I beat the game!" So in my excitement to see the game's ending, I jumped up from the floor, but I accidentally kicked my toy batmobile, which rolled across the floor, and hit the Nintendo's reset button. The ending screen went blank and the game rebooted. And by then, our time was up and mom made us get in the car to buy groceries and return the game to the rental store. 😢 Once I reached my 20's and KZbin was a thing, I did eventually e-mail my brother a let's play of Flintstones, so we could finally watch the ending. 😆

I remember the Super Nintendo Release date here in the States was during the summer or fall of 1991, but I guess you're referring to the Japanese Release date which most definitely was late 1990. I really like this list of games, I'm definitely going to try a few of them out. One game that is also really good and came out during the last days of the NES was Moon Crystal, with great animation, graphics and gameplay. Since there were over 250 titles that came out for the NES after the SNES release, you should do another one of these. Great video as always John!!

Shatterhand was a lot like Mega Man games. You could choose which stage you wanted to go to, and as mentioned in the video, bosses were like the robot masters where you learned their pattern to beat them. .

At the time, the SNES was the next generation of gaming consoles, but when I play SNES games now on the virtual console or on my switch, I see that much of the thinking about game design was very similar, just yet with better graphics and sound on a 16-bit console. When I play the SNES mini or emulation now most of the games feel very very similar to the NES counter parts just slightly more advanced. There are, of course, exceptions to this, because Super Mario world was next Mario game and was so great to play but it really wasn’t until games like Star Fox that felt so far beyond 8-bit, consoles. Many early SNES games were basic even if they utilised mode-7 well

Interesting topic, and a sad story in many ways. By this time, NES programmers got even better, cartridge chips brought higher quality, memory gave bigger and better games, control got smoother, graphics and sound improved more, and all around better command of the NES hardware was acheived. Just when the NES was producing its arguably best ever stuff, and ready for more, was just when the general public started caring less and less about it. A sad story indeed. Hopefully this video finally gives these games the much more deserved attention than they got. People will talk Zelda and SMB, but some of the most fantastic NES games are right here in this video.

Cowboy Kid is legitimately my favorite NES game, and my love for Legend of the Mystical Ninja may be tied to that. But, I used to have a copy for the longest time, and when I found out that it sold for pretty insane prices now, I went to find it, and my grandmother who has never thrown anything away, ever, had thrown away all of my NES games... So now it is gone forever, lost to time and memory.

The only issue is that the SNES did not launch until September 1991 in the US. However, you do have the correct date for the Super Famicom Japan release. Back then Japan was a year to 18 months ahead of the US.

wow Faria, there's a game no one ever talks about and i usually forget about too but it's really good. I had it back in the day but it was pretty rare to come across.

Oh damn, I totally forgot about Kabuki Quantum Fighter! Yes, a game where you play as a Kabuki actor who kills stuff with red hair. There's no way it could NOT be awesome.

Kirby was at least a game that I got introduced to after we got an SNES. I'm not sure if the actual timeline. But it held up pretty well at the time I recall.

Pretty certain that Princess Tomato released ahead of the SNES. That's how I remember it, as my friend and I rented it one weekend, and we stopped renting NES games once the SNES released. Wiki says Princess Tomato released Feb. 91, SNES released Aug 91.

To be fair any late Capcom or Taito release could have been automatically on the list from the Megaman series to Panic Restaurant. I personally thought Power Blade, Gun Nac, or Darkwing Duck would've made the cut.

I much prefer and love the Famicom version of Shatterhand, Tokkyū Shirei Solbrain (Super Rescue Solbrain). Had a different opening sequence and the graphics for most of the characters and items were changed as well. The stages were also slightly changed, and the music was much cooler. Best part is you are in a Robocop-type suit! 🦾

Kabuki Quantum Fighter has a great soundtrack. The game is a bit short as I recall, but very fun. Out of the bargain priced $19.99 games I got from Toys R Us back in the day, this along with Snake Rattle N Roll and Batman were the best. Silent Service was the cheapest game they had at 14.99 but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit as well.
