Hi Yad, as an American who has lived in Marrakech for 11 years, I can tell your followers how to handle the public taxi drivers. By law, they must use their meters. When you stop the taxi, make it obvious that you look at the number painted on the front door. If they ask you how much you will pay, look at the number again and walk away. When you get in the taxi, look to see if they turn the meter on. If they don't, ask them to turn it on. If they still don't, get out of the taxi. there will always be another coming by. By making it obvious that you are noting their taxi number, you are letting them know that you are aware of the law, and it will alarm them because any time they get a complaint, they are in danger of losing their license. If they automatically turn on the meter, I always tip them and thank them for their honesty. I understand that you have had particularly bad experiences, but in my experience, the good on3s outweigh the bad.

@@lorik.gordon7075 Hello. I’m looking to travel to Morocco for a holiday with my husband but the Australian travel is that to use extreme caution to travel there at the moment. Do you find that this is the case or is it only a very small part of Morocco with there might be some danger?
@Mayfrancisxavier26 күн бұрын
Are the taxis not really cheap anyway and we may as well just pay whatever the fee when they turn on their meter on early?

Hi Yad, Firstly thanks for the advice you gave me regarding transport in Dubai + KL & Singapore at the end of last year, when I visited Marrakech last year in July! we had hired a car & driver for a week, and yes your right the drivers are and can be quite rude or impertinent should I say, I felt as if they wanted to do the job with the least amount of effort and get paid, and as long as we don't inconvenience the driver!! then they are happy, I have hired car & drivers in quite a few countries but Marrakech was a totally bad experience!!! and everything you said regarding them in your Vlog is true, so I empathise, otherwise its a beautiful place, I had to cancel our car & driver and eventually The Oberoi where we stayed provided transport for the remainder of our stay, enjoy your globe trotting adventures with your family. I just left there yesterday, nice vibrant city but not really THAT much to see. I saw half your list in half a day on foot and a few places that not on your list…whilst running on a slight fever after a case of food poisoning 36hrs prior and not eaten in 2 days. I found in general Moroccans are very friendly….however some of those in Marrakesh just out in out trying to scam. The Jemma el-Fnaa…I observe from afar mostly. Stayed FAR away from those with animals, and any hint of taking a photo I get a feeling they will come running across to me. I feel even the night market restaurants people were also far too pushy trying to get me to sit down. I feel like those sat that who are eating there wasn’t too comfortable saying no back to them. Not to mention the prices in that area is double for the same thing in a regular cafe usually too. Great are to people watch for the day but not participate. Menara Gardens, I was quite disappointed….Garden is pushing the word too far. It’s mostly an olive tree grove with a square pond in the middle with a house over looking it that you need to pay 60dh to enter. I wish there’s more to it? Then I went to Menara Mall too, and speaking of Malls, I also went to Carre Eden as well as my accommodation is in the next block. I find Moroccan malls to be a little disappointing overall, even the best ones lacks some of the world’s biggest brands, and their prices seems to be MORE than what it is in Europe. It’s almost like they take the retail price in Europe, then add 20% to it on average. This seem to apply not just for clothing, but pretty much everything across the board from Samsung phones, Apple phones, Zara clothing to IKEA furniture. It is a totally different experience in a negative way compared to say….shopping in Marina Bay Sands in Singapore or the IFC Mall in Hong Kong. The reduced choice + price hike makes a worse shopping experience. Granted, if you are a local, you don’t really have much of a choice. I have gone a bit off a tangent here, in the end I had a good time in Marrakesh, but I tried my hardest not to get scammed….but I did a little. I went to a restaurant in Jemma el-Fnaa and ordered a Tarjina, not Tarjin. Targina was originated from Marrakesh and I went there specifically to try it at source. I was expecting it to come cooked in a pot and pour it out in front of me. However the guy brought it out in a Tarjin…I did not make a mistake….I pointed him out at the menu, I even took a photo of the item that I pointed it out to him. The portion size too were small, half the meat compared to Dar Naji in Rabat. At least it was real meat! I feel like everyone in Marrakesh is hustling, non-stop, and it makes it almost like hard work for someone who has mainly travelled in Europe and SE Asia. Kids, literal kids less than 10yrs old would approach me asking for money and when i say no they shouted at me in an angry tone…probably swearing. Randoms would say “China, Japan, Taiwan” at me in order to get me to engage so they can move onto the next step in their script. I have to be on my guard a LOT more than just letting the sights in, the experience feels like hard work.

You are right those scammers in jamaa alfinah are a disgrace to the city and I don't understand why the authorities let them do that to tourists , I am Moroccan and they tried to scam me years ago , my advice is to stand your ground and refuse their service if we can call it a service and never let them intimidate you because in my humble opinion they are simply criminals .

They are stupid enough to ruin their own business, scamming 1 person will give a bad reputation and cause more people to avoid you, they don't understand that fact.
