I thought it was just a built up thing too, until I felt when I stepped on a piece of plywood, and said to the lady this place must have had a basement. She told me, no, that's the lube rack. We talked to her for about 20 minutes, and found out it was the actual Wally's filling station, that Andy based it on. The original owner and Andy's father were cousins. He used to hang out there as a kid, so when he made the show, He put Wally's filling station into it.

Leon made me laugh every time, he was a great character with his cowboy outfits and his PBJ but I was a little surprised that he was only on 5 times.

I saw Bob Denver in person at New River Gorge Bridge Day in West Virginia in 1994. He and his wife were living in Princeton, West Virginia at the time.

At 9:44. Vito Scotti appears with Jamie Farr. Vito Scotti often played Italians and other ethnic roles. He was the Japanese soldier in Gilligan's Island. He was Nazorine the baker in "The Godfather". His final role was the restaurant manager in "Get Shorty."

When I did a scene with Andy in Matlock, between takes I asked him if he remembered Nicholson in Mayberry. He said that there were so many unknowns 'passing through' and Jack didn't make an initial impression on him. But Andy said George Goober Lindsey told him later that, yeah, Jack had indeed been on the show and that Nicholson was "hanging by a thread" financially because he hadn't gotten his 'break' yet. And then Andy said, " But he's done real well". Yep, you might say that.

Sterling Holloway performed in several Disney animated films, going back to Dumbo(1941). I think he was in animated films for Disney from the 40’s to the 70’s.

I always enjoy watching guest appearances on old TV series by big stars before they were famous, like Nicholson on this show, Gene Hackman on The Invaders, Al Pacino in N.Y.P.D., Sylvester Stallone on Kojak, or Christopher Walken on Hawaii Five-O.
