I'm an ESL teacher. Been teaching in China for 10 years. This is a fantastic video! With the a/an, I usually explain to my students that you'll need to use "an" if the following word starts with a vowel. It's simple for them if they have already gotten the vowels down pretty well along with the spelling of the vocabulary for the lesson. Thanks for the video. Subscribed. Cheers

Actually, "less than two pounds" is correct, because it's referring to the weight, not the number of pounds per se. And related to that, amount is often used incorrectly instead of number, as in "amount of people" and "amount of cars".

I first read about the “amount/number” rule in Michael Swan’s book ages ago. Now everyone says “amount” +countables on tv: large amounts of people instead of large numbers of people, which is correct.

I'm a native speaker, but I still love your videos, Lucy! I swear you could sell sand in the desert :P Must say that I disagree with "weighing fewer than 2 pounds", though. You're referring to the total weight, not the individual pounds. Similarly, I would say, "I waited for less than 30 minutes", rather than "I waited for fewer than 30 minutes". Otherwise it sounds like an accumulation of individual minutes, as opposed to a time period.

Thank you, I came to see if someone else agrees that this one was a mistake, although otherwise the explanation for fewer/less sounded right! The way I understand it you would only use fewer when measuring weight with actual pound weights, so there wouldn't be a continuous scale from zero onwards but just 0, 1, 2 etc. as possible weights. In this case the baby could easily weigh 1.99 pounds, so it needs to be less.

4:21 I think that weight is uncountable (because there’s in principle an infinite number of possible values within any given finite range), so I believe the correct statement is ‘the baby weighed less than two pounds at birth). At least going by the standard definitions of the words countable or uncountable. (Eg, anything that takes values in the real numbers is uncountable whereas anything that takes values in the integers is countable.)

Hello, Lucy, First off, congratulations on your wedding. I wish you and your husband the best. Well, I have some doubts regarding the use of 'less' and 'fewer'. You say that 'less' is used on singular and uncountable nouns, whereas 'fewer' is used on plural and countable nouns; I understood that. However, according to another English teaching channel, they say that there is an exception when it comes to quantities and measures, which in this case, we've got to use 'less' instead of ' fewer '. The last one is the only one, that I as a german would make. All the others seem to be rather native speakers' mistakes, that may originate from specific regions. That doesn't mean a foreign speaker who learns the language by (possibly wrong) example couldn't adopt them. The last one stands out, because it can be seen as a false translation of germen, as we use "in" when referring to a travel destination in the past, so you really have to remember, that this is different in English.

Thanks for the interesting lesson, I have often heard the confusion with me/I and a/an, glad to have an expert chime in on it. Something else I've heard more and more recently that I believe is incorrect is using whenever instead of using when, for example, "I let my hair grow long whenever I started high school", is that right or wrong?

In that instance, "when" would be incorrect. Whenever is generally used with actions that repeat or have the potential of being repeated. For example, "I am uneasy whenever I'm with a group of people" or "I will be ready whenever I am tested for this subject"

Also whenever is more commonly used when (no pun intended) the time for an event is uncertain like, "I'll come over whenever I feel like it" Though in that case when is also correct.

"whenever" is wrong in that sentence. I let my hair grow long WHEN I started high school" is correct. It answers the question "When did you let your hair grow long?" It refers to a specific time = when. An example: "When did you start learning English?" Answer: "When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989." or a longer version of that answer: "I started learning English when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989."

You can only start high school once, you cannot repeat the action so it is "when" not "whenever" "Whenever" is for when the situation is repeated

Lovely video. Great to see you back! (And many happy returns on the wedding!!) On the a/an it is correct to say “an hotel” rather than “a hotel”. So your Italian friend is not entirely wrong - it’s very stylish to use “an” before a word beginning with an h, especially if the h is silent!

Oh, please don’t give people incorrect information. “An hotel” is never correct and using “an” before an unpronounced “h” isn’t “stylish”, it is standard English.

I'm no native speaker. Except for the first one (less/fewer), the other examples actually sounded really wrong to my ears lol. I think it's because I learned the language the "formal way". The first time I saw "could/should/would of" I struggled trying to understand what the person meant, and then finally realized it was a mistake...

Actually, number 2 should be: 'The baby weighed less than two pounds at birth.' because the weight could very likely be a portion of a pound. You would only say fewer if a baby's weight were always rounded up to the nearest whole number. I hope that makes sense.

I thought you might talk about exceptions to the a/an rule with pronunciation like "an hour" or "a uniform" because the 'h" is silent and the "u" is pronounced like a "y" consonant.

They’re actually not exceptions :) she said ‘an’ should be put before vowel SOUNDS not letters. So both of the examples comply with the rule and do not constitute exceptions :)
