Instead of just knowing that after the expression "look forward to" the verb should be in the 'ing' form, I think it's important to also know that 'to' is a preposition, and thus any verb that follows such expressions should be in the 'ing' form. Also, it's helpful to make a comparison with when the particle 'to' does NOT work as preposition but, instead, as an indicator of the infinitive form of a verb, which is the case with expressions such as "need to", "have to", "want to", "like to", "try to", "help to", etc. There's a simple trick to tell the difference. If we use a noun after 'to' and the sentence makes clear sense, then 'to' is working as a preposition, and thus any verb that follows such expression needs to be in the ‘ing’ form. Otherwise, 'to' is an indicator of the infinitive, i.e., I need to go now. They want to play outside. We'll have to work harder. He tried to convince them. In such case, a noun after 'to' won't make proper sense. (-I need to pencil now. They want to jacket outside. We'll have to potato harder. He tried to fishing rod.-) *restrict to* The benefit is restricted to the elderly. (elderly = noun) ∴ This fund is *restricted to assisting* the elderly. *dedicate to* I'll dedicate more time to my studies. (studies = noun) ∴ I'll *dedicate* more time *to studying*. *respond to * The patient responded very well to the treatment. (treatment = noun) ∴ How should one *respond to being* corrected in public? *assign to* Two agents were assigned to a new mission. (mission = noun) ∴ They were *assigned to investigating* the XYZ case. *key to* Discipline is key to success. (success = noun) ∴ Talent is *key to being* a good singer. *steps to* Important steps to happiness. (happiness = noun) Five *steps to becoming* fluent in a foreign language. Once we understand the difference between 'to' as a preposition and 'to' as indicator of the infinitive form, we shouldn’t have any problems with expressions such as “used to” and “be/get used to”. They used to surf when they lived in Hawaii. (surf = verb) They are used to big waves. (waves = noun) ∴ They *are used to surfing* big waves.

Thank you for sharing this basic grammar corrections. I am a Filipino and was fortunate to study in a school using English as a medium of instruction and they can be quite unforgiving to student's with grammatical errors. It's been so long that whenever I encounter people speaking in English and commiting grammatical errors, I usually have doubts whether I was wrong with my grammar and they're right. However, most often than not; I'd think that the system of education have drastically degraded through the years. Coming across your channel in youtube gives me a glimmer of hope that our young generation of today has a fighter chance. To some people, this may be a small issue, however; for me, it's not just the error. It's all about doing it right. As one teacher of mine said, "If you are to use a foreign language to communicate, the best way to respect it, would be to clearly speak with the right pronounciation, diction and a sufficient vocabulary. SO happy to have found you. I am a medical language specialist and with the speech recognition software used, it’s mostly an editing job. My biggest problem is with comma usage, but that’s another discussion. My biggest two pet peeves in current American English are the incorrect uses of “different than,” and “less” rather than “fewer”. The use of less in describing numbers of, well, anything, just drives me nuts. And the fact that no one seems to use “different from” anymore, opting instead for “different than.” So bad! Just me on a Soap Box! Thanks for listening!! 😬

Great video. As a non native speaker my English came solely through novels and novel writing. It's so sad that I didn't come across your channel sooner, because if I did, I wouldn't have to wrote several hundred thousand words worth of stories just to finally click and grasp some of the concepts you mentioned in the video, especially the one about using the gerund after the word "to": I am used to eating rice for breakfast. For several years I have been using this without being able to explain it, cause I served as a replacement teacher before, and my students were absolutely perplexed because to them, it should always be the root word after "to, can etc". I don't know if it is because I was raised in New England, Connecticut, and Massachusetts to be exact, but I have been grateful for having had good English teachers. I am sharing these sentences with my sister, niece, and nephew. There were at least two typos besides missing spaces after most of the numbers such as 1.This ... One of the typos was using I'm instead of In in the eat rice question. I forget what the other one was. I was right on with each sentence but it annoyed me that what to me were needed hyphens were not included, something which I see in a lot (why do so many spell it "alot") of reviews. If I had a son who was seven, I would have a seven-year-old son. I do not rent a one bedroom apartment; I rent a one-bedroom apartment. I found the exercise very helpful in teaching people how to properly word sentences. Lisa's enunciation was excellent and she did not talk down to those who have trouble with their language.

Hi! Lisa,Thanks for producing this helpful video. However,seems like there could have been a typo error in Sentence 8. You said ‘In my country,...’,but the first few words that appeared is ‘I’m my country’,which means ‘I am my country’. I realised that when I typed ‘In my country’ the first time,the word ‘In’ was automatically changed to ‘I’m’ and I had to manually retype ‘In’ again. Younger native speakers in the US and UK don't know about the subjunctive use. They can't use the past perfect either.

Even I couldn’t explain what the subjunctive is. I just use it instinctively. It “sounds right”. But then, I’m a 64 year old native English speaker who studied grammar over 50 years ago. I also studied high school Latin, which involved intensive analysis of grammar. Add to that Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees . . . But the language is changing. Some things that kids say today is like hearing fingernails on a chalkboard. One example: advertisement. Today, people pronounce it “adver-tize-ment”. In my day, we were corrected: “advert-iss-ment”. But hey, Après moi, le déluge. I’m sure that in 500 years time, English will be as different as Shakespeare is to us.

Another improper language word is: Ain't: I learned that while in High School. Teacher went off on the chalk board and wrote the improper word and put the international symbol that means NO a circle with a diagonal line through the circle and then (Failed) everyone for the day, even though one person did the mistake. Everyone suffered the consequences.
