All the people criticizing the video for not just carrying a lighter, BUT.. Ferro rod & striker can come right out of water and work, function at 50 below 0, and I’m sure can be taken on an airplane without any suspicious looks…. Plus, it’s just plain FUN and satisfying to know how to use these !!
@saltycat6623 жыл бұрын
Do those same people realize that lighters run out faster?
@nickoleli4373 жыл бұрын
Funny story though. I had a firesteel kit on a plane and the officer completely ignored my lighter but had loads of questions for his superior about whether firesteels are permissible -_-
@thingsofsuch3 жыл бұрын
Yea, but, what about just carrying a liter, you know, because it is a lighter?
@ilovefreeski2 жыл бұрын
Exactly and those who say that also never tried to use a lighter when its -20 degrees celcius out, ive tried and no matter how good your butane torch or bic is it wont work unless you keep it warm in an inside pocket.

Nice one Chris. Enjoyed looking at your collection of firesteel. One thing I've found is that the bigger firesteel are easier for kids to handle and learn with. You showed a good selection. The clear tubes are an excellent idea and one I'll be adding to my firekit. I'm curious to see if they'll be suitable for charcloth as it's a really cheap form of tinder for me along with Sisal (jute twine) processed into its individual strands in another tube.

Keep in mind that alot of people live off the grid in the middle of nowhere. Ferro rods and magnesium bars are a good backup for when your lighters run out of fuel and you won't be back in town anytime soon.

I love your suggestions, and I've tried a few of what you mentioned, and they are great. One of my favorites wasn't on the list, so I'm excited to tell you. The company Schrade has amazing Ferro rods I initially was testing out there knives and axes, but most of them come with a rod, and I was amazed how well they worked. Its more of a soft one but last a long time and throws some big sparks. I highly recommend you check them out if you haven't already. My favorite are the ones that come with there axes, but they are all the same, just different in size. :)

Here's another good tinder idea: Kapok. You can buy kapok filling in a lot of places, it's frequently used in pillows. It compacts REALLY small, but a teeny tiny bit fluffs up and catches with the smallest of spark. Keep an empty Ibuprofen or other medicine bottle, stuff it FULL of kapok, and you've got a month's worth of superb tinder.
@sweetdrahthaar79513 жыл бұрын
So I take it you can probably find that stuff at those giant craft stores. Or fabric stores?

@@GunGuy258 Thanks. I used to have lots of tanks. I was really into the African cichlids way back when they were still being shipped to America direct from Lake Malawi and Tanganyika. I really enjoyed the African catfish. Somehow being as peaceful as they were they survived in tanks of those ravenous cichlids that were always at war with one another.
@oldmilkmaid19552 жыл бұрын
And if you're sitting in a field of milkweed that's gone to seed, break open a pod and it's full of kapok that you don't have to pay for. My mom and her friends used to collect the pods during WWII to sell for use in military life-jackets and insulated items. Cattail fluff is also called kapok and will do the exact same thing, and it's free, too.
