20 Gallon Saltwater Aquarium update and How I Clean my 20 gallon Saltwater Aquarium! In this video is update you all on how the new 20 gallon Saltwater Aquarium is doing. I talk about the stocking, how the clean up crew have assisted me with maintenance and I show you just how easy it is to maintenance this aquarium. Keeping a smaller saltwater aquarium has it’s benefits when it comes to cleaning. It took me about 10mins total to clean this tank. Cleaning the filters will add on an additional 10 mins or so but nonetheless, it’s very easy compared to larger aquariums. It’s also easier on the pockets.
Well I hope you all enjoyed the video. Please consider subscribing to the channel if you haven’t already. Follow me on Instagram @

Hey man, I watch your videos everyday almost. They give me good education the easy way to saltwater works. Question I had was. I'm starting my first saltwater 20 gallon. I have live fiji pink sand by caribsea and some south sea base rock. For filter I have an ac50. No skimmer. Would the south sea base rock be ok to start and also what media would you recommend for the filter to start? Using prime and stabilty. And if there are any other recommendations. Much appreciated keep up the great videos.

Indeed bro, simple is best in my opinion. Check out 37 gallon saltwater aquarium. Same original stocking but with additional inhabitants so it’s basically just an evolved tank. All while keeping it simple and low tech.

How much salt do I put in a 20 gallon fish tank
@TheFishCorner
@TheFishCorner 2 жыл бұрын
You have to measure it out. 1/2 cup per gallon. So 10 cups if it’s really 20 gallons. Which it’s not… a 20 gallon tank is around 17 - 18 gallons… I would use 8.5 - 9 cups of salt.

You have definitely inspired me to start a 20 gallon saltwater tank. Can I ask a question. I saw your not running a wave maker. do you recommend a wave maker for a 20 gallon?
@TheFishCorner

Good to hear Bro. I appreciate you. As for the circulation pump. I don’t use one because I already have a ton of flow coming from my HOB filters. If I needed more flow, I would use the circulation pump, so it’s really based on whether or not you need it.

I ended up going with a 10 gallon and it’s up and cycling, but how do I know how much fresh water to replace every day? By seeing the line where the water was and adding till it’s there? Or only via refractometer? I haven’t gotten a good answer anywhere😅Thanks in advance :)
@TheFishCorner
@TheFishCorner 2 жыл бұрын
Good morning, that’s a great question. Just mark the tank where you like the water level, this can be with a piece of tape, marker or the water line. Then just top it off daily or every other day. The refractometer is used to check the salinity of the water. You should only add RODI water to top off evaporation. I hope this helps. 😁

@@TheFishCorner good morning and thank you, thats the piece of info I was missing :) I don’t have a reliable access to RODI water just yet and my local fish shop said distilled is fine since it’s the second purest option, I do know the ph in distilled water can be a bit low but as long as I actively monitor and maintain the ph in the tank via chemicals, would it be alright in a pinch?

how is that sand sifting starfish doing in that 20 gallon tank? I want one in my 32 but was told he would starve in the small tank
@TheFishCorner
@TheFishCorner 3 жыл бұрын
The fish has been upgraded to a 37 gallon but he’s doing great. Definitely not starving over here. I think it’d be fine to put a sand star in your 32 gallon. The logic that it will starve in a small tank is ridiculous, if there’s food for it to eat then it would be easier to find in a smaller tank.

Make sure when you buy your corals it’s from a healthy tank. Then buy the coral dip solution and follow the instructions on it. You can also quarantine your corals if you need to. All I do is buy them healthy, dip them, and put them in.

$120 a month on water change!? Sorry im new to this hobby. 3 months experience and i'm already thinking hard on achieving a 0 water change setup or a minimum water change setup. Some ideas I have for you include using protein skimmer + refugium + seachem matrix + seachem purigen. Dose the trace elements if you have corals for replenishing elements. For the HOB setup maybe a HOB skimmer + HOB refugium + seachem matrix + purigen? My 2 cents haha. I have a 21gal nano tank in a fowlr setup and I really hate making the RODI water so i'm trying to find ways to export nutrients through bio and chemical filtration. I'm sure it'll cost a lot less than $120 a month and perhaos more impactful on a larger tank.
@TheFishCorner
@TheFishCorner 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your input. Just to clarify, the $120/month is on my 150 gallon saltwater aquarium. Which I have a huge protein skimmer, filters etc on it. As for the 20 gallon, water changes probably cost $10 a month. It’s basically pennies compared to the 150. As for finding a system that requires 0 water changes... good luck, you have to do your water changes unless it’s an open system. When we obtain fish tanks it’s a closed system, basically a poop bowl lol so you MUST bring in clean water REGARDLESS of your filtration. I’ve been in the saltwater hobby for 3yrs and studied extensively before I ever got started. The reason I’m doing a simple 20 gallon system with HOB filters is to show viewers what is possible. I started with this 20 gallon aquarium 3 yrs ago and went out and bought all the bells and whistles, but it’s not necessary at all. So if someone wants to finally get started in the saltwater game, they can easily see how simple it could be. By the way, we don’t make RODI water, we make the saltwater. RODI is to top of your tank due to water evaporation. But I too, hate making my saltwater. Which is why I buy it prepare. As for the HOB protein skimmer, I have one but again, it’s not necessary. My tank is doing absolutely amazing with the bare minimum. Which is what I’m trying to depict. Too many people are intimidated by saltwater aquariums, hell, I was, which is why I did so much research before started. I’m still learning, yet I’ve learned enough to make it very simple for someone that wants to finally get started. Hence the reason I’m doing it the way I am with this 20 gallon. Nice talk haha 🥂

@@TheFishCorner Thanks for your input! I learnt so much from you! A friend of mine gave me an RODI machine to start the hobby thats why I make my own RODI water. I use that water for top up as well as making saltwater using redsea blue bucket. However the machine takes hours and hours to produce a few gallons of RODI water. I may consider doing what you do buying premade water. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for your support! I really appreciate it!! 120 bucks a month on water changes? Why not use a nutrient export thats not so costly?
@TheFishCorner
@TheFishCorner 4 жыл бұрын
I export the nutrients with my filters; sump and skimmer. But the water changes are still necessary. Do you have any recommendations on any other ways to export nutrients? I have to be honest with you man, it could easily be more costly when it comes to doing water changes. If I either did them more often or did larger water changes. So any tips would be appreciated. 👍🏾

How did you make sure the new salt water is the same temperature as the tank water?
@TheFishCorner
@TheFishCorner 3 жыл бұрын
As long as it’s close by a few degrees it’s all good. Room temperature here is 76 degrees, that’s good enough. Don’t overthink or over complicate it. When you’re doing a percentage of 50 or less your temperature numbers don’t have to be spot on. That goes for saltwater and freshwater. But anything more than 50% you’ll want to ensure the temperature is closer.
