50 years ago my young brother caught 3 salmon in one day on the river Leven,he was 14 years old ,fishing for sea trout with 6lb.breaking strain line, the biggest was 22lb,he walked over a mile with this fish, and it in the local papers and the photograph wad displayed in the window of the local sports shop, he went on to win many competitions, but it will never be equalled, since passed away, but a star

Bless him. Always Be remembered though and plus he had a picture of the fish he caught. Nothing worse than catching a monster Fish and No Camera to prove it !...I think most fishermen tell their stories about how big the fish were they caught. I think this lad in this video, was poaching that river. And NOT having a landing Net haha. (Part Timer haha)..

@@ronnysvensson8232 oh mate, get over yourself, i've been fishing for over 30 years and YES salmon do get landed with there heads out of the water just like any other Knackerd fish does. Again , yes they do come close to the waters edge when they are knackerd and worn out BECAUSE they dont have a choice. landing a 20lber on a 9 ft 6/7 weight rod and 8lb line, foul hooked or not is just brilliant! not to say the hook size was probably a 10 or 12. however the fisherman really does need to invest in a net. well done buddy (Fishing 4:20) bloody good job young man.

Around 20 years ago I caught an 18lb salmon by Rees' yard, Abergarwed on the river Neath in South Wales in mid march. I was fishing for trout with an 8ft 4wt rod and a 5lb Kamasan leader with a very drab goldhead dubbed rabbit body greenwell hen hackled nymph. I had fished for a mile of water without a single rising fish despite a very heavy hatch of Baetis Rhodanii and not a single take to my nymph. I was about to give up when I heard a large splash downstream. I marked the position between 2 ash trees and quartered the river in an across and downstream fashion. When I was just thinking I had passed the point where the fish rose I had an unexpected arm wrenching powerful take. After a short fight a beautiful hen springer literally a bar of silver floundered on the surface quickly tamed by the softness of my 4wt rod which also protected the relatively light leader. My net was hopelessly undersized and so I very carefully waded to the limit of my chest waders to a shingle beach downstream towing the played out salmon behind me. Twice it revived and offered progessively shorter runs. When I reached the beach I quickly tailed the exhausted fish. I would have killed it but I had drawn the attention of a bailiff badly hiding in the vegetation on the opposite bank. Although I had a salmon rod licence it was before the date when you could take salmon in England and Wales. It was barely alive but I managed to revive it to the point that it very slowly swam a few yards and stationed itself in deeper water. I went back to my car, waited 5 minutes then went back to see if the bailiff had gone so I could tail it. He had gone but so had the fish. Your tackle looked something like a 7 or 8 wt rod which is why your fish was able to fight for longer in my opinion. That day the pool at Rees' yard held many spring run salmon, hiding their heads under submerged logs and big rocks their backs were a beautiful slate blue colour in the deep water. The following spring there was no run.

Excellent fight from the salmon and well done, by the way the reel sounds fantastic, I love loud clicker reels, and I know a few angler's that never carry nets and don't worry about people saying it's less damage to the fish using a net, salmon are so strong and tough with the obstacles they have to overcome don't get rid of the leeda reel it sounds class 👍🇮🇪 🍀

Father had to play the fish as it was obviously too much for my wee arms, very next cast a 27lb.the good old days when fish were plentiful May 1989.
