Great list. I watched 'Escape From New York' upon it's release. I was 11 yrs old, downtown, at night, at a theater that was almost as scary as the one Borgnine is in. I still watch it a couple of times a year. Carpenter shaped my outlook on life, I wanted to be Kurt Russel. If you haven't already seen it, check out a film called 'To Live and Die in L.A.' from the 80's. That's my fave. Cheers.

20. The Hollow Point ... somehow an ok film... 19. Rambo: Last Blood ......was not that good.. Rambo IV john rambo was way better imo only second to First Blood 18. Raw Deal ..... ahahaha great fun action flick :D 17. The Lost City of Z ... great visual good storytelling 16. The Lighthouse .... well as u said, not for everyone... boring at sometimes but good visuals good confined space psych flick 15. Dragonslayer .... great 80s movie.. what more can u ask 4 :D you ve got a great dragon for its time :D 14. I can’t rave enough about You Were Never Really Here. Not only does Joaquin Phoenix show his incredible range (same decade as Joker, Her and The Master), but it clocks in around 90 minutes. A must watch on this excellent list.

CombatVetCollects funky funko there are flashbacks which are brief. Lynne Ramsay, the Director, utilizes a style of showing the aftermath of violence as opposed to graphically demonstrating it on screen. Thanks for asking and thank you for your service.

Darren, huge fan, your lists are my go to for ideas to watch. Bringing out the dead is amazing, I'm a nurse that works in ambulances and the stories really are played out well. But boy do those guys HATE being called ambulance drivers. LOL, in the movie Nick Cage is a Paramedic..

“Bringing Out the Dead,” is a killer movie, and has one of my favorite soundtracks ever. *Really love how Scorsese shows the differences between the shifts, depending on who Cage’s partner is. Ving Rhames has a hilarious scene early on, with Goodman and Sizemore both at the top of their game. When I ask people, it’s the least seen Scorsese movie, after either King of Comedy or After Hours. If you haven’t seen either of those, I recommend After Hours to anyone, and King of Comedy for those who love all of Scorsese’s work.

I'm glad I didn't skip this list. I hadn't noticed The Great Escape was on Prime. I've had insomnia since I was around 9, my dad also did even though he worked 2.5 jobs. (Mom was a siblings caretaker as well as raising me.) So one night he cracked my door open and whispered "If you are awake The Great Escape is about to start" I darted out of bed and ran to the living room for some father/daughter time and to watch a great movie. I had a fascination with Steve McQueen for a while as kid. I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed the experience of The Lighthouse. I really liked how it showed all the facets of breakdowns including tears and weakness, sometimes when that is shown the plot will punish the guy for that directly, while there is a great quote from it, it seems the "punishments" are independent from those moments of "weakness." Would be interested in disagreements from guys though. That isn't the main reason I liked it though, it just something I've been curious of other folks viewpoints on.

Brawl in Cell Block 99. So good, so unexpected. Hollywood actors are notoriously short. Many leading men are under 5'7", and very few are over 6'. Vince Vaughn is not short. He's 6'5" and probably about 240 to 250 pounds in this film. There's a reason why the MMA and Boxing have weight classes. Vince Vaughn would be a heavyweight and it really shows in the movie. It's very violent, and it's one of those hidden gems that came out of left field.

Well this chick likes alot of these movies, some of them because of you. Watched Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99 from your recommendations and loved them. Can't wait to see Dragged Across Concrete when it comes to a streaming service. And thank you for the way you talked about I Was Never Really Here and female directors bc you are right; they are out there making great movies like that one, but are just not getting the attention they deserve. I LOVE your recommendations!! You give a good description of the movies and i by the end i have a good idea if i would like it or not. I recommend people watch Upload on Amazon. I had a blast watching the 10 episodes. It had a good balance of comedy with times that get sad, happy and suspenseful at times.

Holy $h*tballs dude I am reeling- I especially love those recommendations that are usually “not for everyone” and you really hit a grand slam with this list but ESPECIALLY Lighthouse. I’m still freaked out, to me this is movie perfection, where you are drop kicked miles from any safe point and strapped in for a ride where sanity isn’t exactly a reoccurring character. I literally yelled out in complete surprise 3 times as I watched it in the pitch dark. The closest I can describe it is this generation’s “Eraserhead”, with perfect dialects that died out over 150 years ago, and an atonal haunting score that ratchets up the anxiety. I’ve long been a fan of Willem DeFoe and his ability to play any type of man from any time and walk of life with ease ( from Jesus Christ to an unhinged transvestite detective) but it’s definitely Pattinson that’s burying the sparky vampire image and making amazing performances here and lately ( even more than one on this list). Truly awesome, yet again I adore the series and your way out there not for everyone picks sure keep alive those of us more adventurous types that don’t prefer the meaning spoon-fed to us. A24 now is like Miramax in the early 90s of Reservoir Dogs and Boogie Nights just amazing cutting-edge stuff. Thank you so much again for keeping it real and keeping us informed much love from fellow film addict!

Meh... Rambo: Last Blood was a big disappointment. It was filmed like a "B" movie, and thus could have been SO much better. It was watchable, but it was definitely lower-class done. What a sad way to end a great franchise...

Bit of trivia... There's a scene in Escape from New York where Snake is flying in the glider... There is a computer generated, 3D topographical map of the city displayed in front of him. Carpenter didn't have any kind of budget to actually make those kind of graphics back then. Most movies didn't. Anyway, the graphics are actually boxes of different sizes painted flat black & edged in florescent paint. This stroke of genius was done by a little known effects guy by the name of James Cameron.

Great list. I've seen all but one of these so one guess what I'm doing tonight. Lots of great classic films. I did like the remake of Papillon and while agree that it wasn't needed, it was nice to see it redone with fresh actors and better film/sound quality. I'd rather have a remake that nearly scene for scene than a bastardization but only as long as it's at least a little bit of an improvement. I grew up watching Kurt Russell in the Disney movies so it was very strange seeing him as 🐍 on the big screen. The Thing is probably one of my favorite sci-fi films of all time, just watched it last night as well as the prequel by the same name

Yessss, I freaking love escape from new York, I knew that was the one you were going to choose as number 1. Dragonslayer, one of my most favorite films from my youth.
