Tomb Raider's 40 fathoms level is one of the best designed, atmospheric and tense levels in the franchsie. Not only it's a clever twist on what a tomb can mean but the whole thing is built around tense short bursts in the water adding lots of vertical exploration and shirt stressful moments. And it is all mixed with regular on foot shenanigans for mahority of the level. Maria Doria may be a tad too long and dull but 40 fathoms is an example how to do water levels correctly.

The most _frustrating_ part for me? It's possible to do water levels _right_ You make the player move like in Subnautica - make it fluid and responsive like it _should_ be; you have a lot of fluid to push off to change direction, after al - and players will _love_ it. That so many game studios insist on making movement in water slow and sluggish is just plain bizarre.

Although it's not really a water level, I've found that any swimming in Far Cry 6 is just awful whether your character's head is above or below the water. Swimming is slow and tedious, no matter if you click your thumbstick to swim faster, that's still really slow and they can't hold their breath for more than 10 seconds without running out of air. There's no perk available on your gear to increase it. The only perk available that increases your breath holding duration, is just for aiming your rifles. Makes you think the protagonist must be a chain smoker or something with how terrible their lung capacity is

How about the diving bell sections of Assassin's Creed Black Flag? You have limited air but you can come back to the diving bell to breathe. Your main objective is to search for treasure chests and animus fragments. There are sharks everywhere and they can see you from a long ways away and will chase you. You're basically defenseless. If you can use a knife or something I haven't found a way to do it. You can accidentally run into sea urchins which will blend into the environment if you're not paying attention. You can be mauled by moray eels that almost come out of nowhere. There are even jellyfish which you need to avoid. It's all around not a fun time.

For me it's Jak 2. Anything to do with the Titan suit. Especially when your under water.

The Black Hole Of Battersee in Watch Dogs 3 has an underground water level, If you fall into it, you're basically stuck because you can't see a thing. Dark as a cave. Keep your drone close to shed light on where you need to go to navigate this area. Not quite a water level but it had the same feeling.

You aren't required to go into the water in Chemical Plant zone. Ever.

Falcon forgot to mention how his brother Falco literally says "shoot a torpedo to help you see." when you're on Aqus in Star Fox 64. I was young, and felt I could see the level well enough, but it was still crazy that Slippy did not think to install something as simple as LIGHTS.

CoD Ghosts was always one of my favorite campaigns in the entire franchise, and I always loved that level too…

I agree. I always thought that was a really unique and fun level.

Obviously everytime you're getting any near the water in GTA 3. The engine has an unfixable glitch where in random places totally out of blue you get launched a couple of feet forward. When it happens when you're near the water, you end up getting wet and dead.

Dire docks was one of my favorite levels when I was a kid. It also had the best music.

The Vault of Trophies in Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness. Breath timer, spikes coming out of the walls of narrow tunnels, Lara's just barely fast enough to swim by. There are a few places where you can come up for air, and there's an aqua lung. Supposedly there are 2 but I've never found the 2nd one. The exploit in the museum where you can get an extra gas mask is helpful here. The gas mask works the same as the aqua lung but lasts longer.

Little tip for those struggling to get through the Shrine of Amana in DS2, use a torch. Use a Flame Butterfly or light a torch at the bonfire and it'll help you to see the path better and to avoid falling into the deep water. of course you will have to sacrifice using your offhand but trust me, it's worth it.

Actually a saving grace for KH2’s atlantica is that it’s not required and you can 100% skip it and still beat the game

The lvl in 1 was so much worse than 2. 2 is easy, I just mute the TV so I can focus on the qte. Yet I'm glad there wasn't a lvl in 3.

I like that Kingdom Hearts 2's Atlantis was mentioned but it's better than the 1st games because it doesn't have water combat

If you cast force speed on yourself before going into the water in KotoR, you'd keep it for quite a long time. It helped that part go a little quicker.

When will developers understand that no one likes water levels? They think they have the level that will crack the code, but they don't. They never will
