20 MS-DOS games released in 1987 - in under 5 minutes

Hello and welcome to the sixth episode of evolution of MS-DOS gaming.
We are in the year of 1987 now.
EGA graphics was almost a standard by 1987, and this showed in the graphics of the games released that year.
And there were a lot of good games released in 1987 for MS-DOS. Games like Test Drive, Space Quest 2, Arkanoid, Defender of the crown and lots more.

The golden age of MS-DOS computing when 16-color EGA monitors came onto the scene followed by 256 color VGA - Great times! Special shout out for Leisure Suit Larry - Man what a fun series.

ET4000 ISA card 1 mb vram 640x460x24 true color with MS DOS 5 drawing in 0a000:00000 with bank switching.

This was very interesting to watch. I had some of these games (Defender, Wizzball, Pirates, Maniac, Test Drive) on C64 and the quality was comparable or even better on the C64. C64 had better graphics (developers put more energy in the games) and the unbeatable SID chip, while PC had faster CPU. So for me, I would still play Defender of the Crown on C64 (as I do sometimes), but evidently Test Drive is more smooth on the PC. Anyway, great games!

True. PC only became regarded as a "gaming machine" when VGA/Soundblaster became the "norm".

Test drive! Damn, that was amazing game! One missing thing is AdLib or SoundBlaster. PC Speaker was, well still is, terrible. Back then, in 80s, Commodore was winner in terms of sound. C64 first, then Amiga took over.

Might and Magic, Bard's Tale, Maniac Mansion and Test Drive would see a lot of hours through the years. Wizball was another favorite, though I played it more on the mighty and immortal Commodore 64. 1987 was a good year. It would also see a port of Phantasie 1 to DOS; another favorite forgotten series as well as the DOS port of Ultima 1. Expanding out from DOS, Dungeon Master made it's debut, and Zelda 2 was released in Japan, while the first game was a hit elsewhere. Final Fantasy began it's storied history, as did Metal Gear, Contra, Double Dragon, Mega Man, Phantasy Star, Shinobi, Ys, and Street Fighter. Maniac Mansion delighted gamers as well in 1987, Shadowgate frustrated them, and Pirates! was, well Pirates! Great Giana Sisters made Nintendo rear it's litigious side in offense, and Hulk Hogan was the Jabroni of the Earth in WWF Superstars. The eternal rogue-like Nethack would first drive players insane in 1987 as well, and World Class Leaderboard Golf defined the golf genre for generations. The Real Ghostbusters proved that licensed properties could have a decent enough tie in game. 1987 was a great year for games.

Didn't Dungeon Master for DOS released as late as 1992? I think ST version was in 1987 and Amiga in 1988. I could be wrong though. Though I agree that 1987 was a great year for gaming on all platforms.

@@retrononame I think it did, though if you'll notice, I mentioned expanding outside outside of DOS before mentioning Dungeon Master. I wasn't intending for it to be the DOS version, same as for Ys, Street Fighter, Mega Man, etc...
