Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G For more donation options, see: Lifeprint.com/donate Thanks! - Dr. Bill

I've had to make the choice of whether to publish without captions or not publish -- since doing a good job of manually typing captions for a video like this can take hours. So, you should probably expect the various series with Cassie to be a bit above your skill level and perhaps use the playlist to find videos that are a bit easier to understand. Here is the official ASLU KZbin master playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PL6akqFwEeSpiLwRFA3ZvuOWMwPXwI7NqA To be clear, I agree, captions (subtitles) would be great for this and many other videos on this channel. It is a goal of mine. I'm even in the process of arranging an intern who will help out with that. For now though I'd rather create more signed content and encourage students to find a level that they can understand most of without captions.

thanks for the great quality learning material! have you ever looked at or into ASLwrite?
@sign-languageАй бұрын
Hello Henry! Way back in the "old days" when Valerie Sutton's SignWriting was gaining popularity I researched the writing of sign language enough to decide that while there are uses and benefits to such systems -- my time would be better invested focusing on video and gloss. However, I'm totally fine with and respectful of those who want to put time into researching, developing, and furthering the evolution of such systems (Val and I had a brief but pleasant FB Messenger exchange earlier this year actually). I think if low-cost (virtually free) streaming video didn't exist there would be a greater need for and benefit of using sign writing systems. I'm actually peripherally involved with one such system named ELiS -- which is primarily (but not exclusively) associated with Brazilian Sign Language (Libras). The Laboratório de Leitura e Escrita em Línguas de Sinais - (Laboratory of Sign Language Reading and Writing) (LALELIS) at Universidade Federal de Goiás (Brazil) has provided ELiS translations of the ASLU Level 1 Curriculum (Lessons 1 - 15) and the "First 100 Signs" lesson. This project was directed by Estelita Barros. www.lifeprint.com/asl101/elis/index.htm

I often have long bangs that cover my eyebrows, does that hinder the ability of others to tell if I am raising/lowering my eyebrows? I think you could probably tell what I'm doing through my eyes, but I'm curious if thats something that would be distracting for a native signer
@sign-languageАй бұрын
I think you are right about signers still being able to understand you just by looking at your eyes because even if your bangs are hanging down there are other subtle changes in the shape of the eyelids and eye area when the eyebrows are raised. I suppose if a scientist did a study comparing the extent to which people could more easily understand signing by someone with bangs vs without there would likely be some sort of statistical impact. However it would probably be a very small impact -- particularly if conversing with a skilled adult Deaf signer. Other thought is more of a sociological consideration: If someone likes and respects you they will not be overly distracted by your bangs. If someone doesn't like you and wants to criticize you they will zone in on any excuse to throw shade.

Could u keep the subtitles? It’s much easier for me to learn that way! And ps Thank you for having this resource available!

Subtitles take a lot of work and he already puts a lot of effort into these videos. I’ve been watching for four years now and while it was hard at first, it’s very easy to follow along now. At first I just did a lot of slow mo and rewinding to figure out stuff I didn’t understand.

nice ASL video if I had to answer the favourite candy question, I’d say lollipops Bill, what were your three wishes?
@sign-languageАй бұрын
What is the time code and I'll take a look and see what I wished for? Off the top of my head I probably wished to be able to do magic and to heal people. (When asking questions about video content it is good to provide a time code in the format: 00:01 KZbin turns those into links and makes it easy to jump to the exact spot in the video.

IF you haven't completed ASL 4 then this video isn't for you. That is why I put in the video title: "Level: ASL 4 and up." Students who have invested the effort of studying the foundational videos and worked their way up feel less of a need for captioning on the more advanced ASL videos. Someday Google will provide auto-captioning of ASL material. For people who can't understand this video without captions here is an easier video with captions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/epKwm6VqdsuMd5I

Does he only teach women?
@sign-language2 ай бұрын
It is a fact that the majority of my on-camera students are female -- and most of them are college-aged. Why? Because, I teach / taught at a public university where few older-than-20-year-olds take ASL classes. On the occasion that an older person actually registers for the college class -- they do not tend to volunteer to sit in front of the camera and be broadcast to millions of people. (And I'm not going to try to pressure anyone to do so). Interestingly, in ASL programs at schools that do not require a second language for graduation a typical ASL class will consist of mostly females. Thirty years ago it used to be 24 females and ONE male. I kid you not. Back then I felt lucky to get "any" males in a class. Now that ASL qualifies to fill the 2nd language requirement at universities that have such a requirement the ratio has balanced out a lot for the ASL 1 and 2 courses but as soon as we reach ASL 3 -- woosh! the number of males drops and we are back to mostly girls again! (ASL 3 and higher levels are usually not needed to fill the "foreign language graduation requirement). Long experience has shown that there are typically a lot more females sitting in an ASL class who actually plan on and want to become proficient in ASL versus many of the males sitting in class that are only there because they are being forced to by a graduation requirement. This can be empirically demonstrated by comparing and contrasting the registration statistics between colleges that require a 2nd language (and allow ASL to serve as a second language) and colleges that don't. Does that mean I don't work with guys in front of the camera? Of course I do. The ones that volunteer tend to do an awesome job! Here are some "guy" videos for you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHLVqKV_Z9F3Y5Y kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5DanYd8hsp-o6M kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIargHxvapaah5Y kzbin.info/www/bejne/j32WZX1tnLyNac0 kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWGTfaB8epytoq8 kzbin.info/www/bejne/morTfYmkhLh9d6c kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJymgIZ-r8prkKM I've got others videos with "guys" but just wanted to share those with you in response to your question.
