I used to work at a builders merchants, one day we got a phone call, it was odd - The phone rang, then it rang again, the man spoke and said he was translating, whilst talking to the customer through an online chat and dictating what he said. I gave the man my time. He then apparently drove to our shop, 3 hours from his home (In the UK, that's half the country...) to purchase the goods from us, because I gave him my time, and didn't hang up the phone. He didn't need to do that, there were at least 50 shops selling the same item as us closer to home for him. That was the day I truly learned the struggles of deaf people. They just want to be heard and respected like everyone else. As they should be. Thanks for sharing your videos. It really does help the abled to see how hard basic things can be.

Gabriela Soltero Honestly with the amount of people who mess with the drive thru employees and they usually hate their job. And the probability of them ever encountering a deaf customer their entire time working there would be 0-1 their entire time there unless they have a regular one there. So it’s no surprise they would assume that he would be faking it since I think it was the guy who came it when he’s just asking him to write it down. And remember they don’t know sign language so all the guy sees is him giving him a sign to write it down. And the girls saying he can’t hear you. I’ve seen a video of a kid pretending to be deaf it got so many dislikes I think he deleted the video couple years ago and he gave them a paper to read and they took the order no questions asked and wrote back the amount. But the second drive thru they went to they were saying he was faking it and he started laughing then he just sped out of the drive thru... They did not have any other people in line either if it was empty so idk why the girl didn’t just write down the order it was there written down.

It's like if a white guy stole from a store; would it be morally correct for the owner of said store to be rude to all white guys because of it? No. Just because there are fake service dogs out there, does it give a right to businesses to refuse service to a disabeld person with a service dog? Federally, no. Because faking a disability, as well as faking a service dog is as illegal as impersonating a law enforcement officer. And if they hate their job, they need to get a new one instead of taking it out on customers, especially disabled customers. I used to work at Tim Hortons. I was at the window, and was taught to be as fast as possible regardless of how it affects our customer's experience. A deaf guy pulled up to the window, and I was forced to stop being so fast. I took his order since he had it on his phone. His order was taking "too long" according to my manager and she got all pissed at me because our times were suffering due to this guy that couldnt hear. I felt like shit because of my manager yelling at me, and how she had absolutely no sympathy for the guy. I can imagine the shit deaf people have to deal with on the day to day just based on that experience.

As a canuck, all those drive thru timers can go down the toilet, for all I care. 22 seconds per order, seems to be the average at most places. On slow days I've had managers get in the car and loop through ordering canned soft drinks, and do that repeatedly, to keep their numbers up, or so they didn't look as bad as the other franchises in the area... @@shadowhawkrine1947 I can tell you from experience, did such calls all the time in IT support, which is a wee bit more complex than ordering fries, a burger and a drink or two. If my half-deaf ass can do it through -45 db of hearing loss and tinnitus, someone allegedly able bodied should be able to as well. Rather than bringing a minder to do things for one, as you'd hobble others with. Tell me, when my hearing flags more, since my wife of over 41 years is dead, who do I bring as a minder to do my ordering for me? Or am I just to starve, like a meek little disabled veteran should? Or lose patience entirely, given at my age, life without the possibility of parole and the death penalty hold very little deterrent value...

When my granddaughter was 16, she worked for Brahms Ice Cream Store in the drive through. A deaf person would come through and write down their order. My granddaughter wanted so desperately to talk to this person so she took it upon herself to learn just enough ASL to communicate with the person who frequented the store. On the day the person returned, my granddaughter spoke in ASL and the person was so excited they cried. Later, my granddaughter received a raise and promotion because the person wrote management and told of the effort she had put in to communicate with them. I was so proud of her!

I don’t know sign language but wanted her to know that help was there if she needed. I printed off a blank piece of receipt paper asking if she needed help finding anything. We did our best air writing letters and she asked my opinion, holding up shirts and I gave a thumbs up or down if I liked it. My manager thought it was a wholesome interaction and I got a special discount for it, but to me I was just helping the way I would for anyone else. 4 years later, I hope he’s not dealing with too much of this.

It's just natural response to use our voice to reply, same as a deaf person continuing to use sign language while speaking to a clerk. Nothing wrong with either, it takes extra effort to stop oneself, further hindering a more difficult interaction for both. Also, maybe they can read lips, hear/feel some of the base waves. I had a friend through highschool that was deaf and it was definitely easier to communicate if we spoke than if we didn't.

That experience, however brief and trivial, made me want to learn ASL so that I can communicate with whoever might need it. I love seeing people's faces when they're happy to be served in a way that feels unique and personal ❤️ Regardless, establishments should have people on hand who know different methods of communication and should make use of these people when necessary. Unfortunately, that's the main type of person they hire at grocery stores and fast food places anymore. When I was a teenager and a younger guy, typically very nice teenagers and older people worked in those places. Now it's just a bunch of rude a**holes who don't care about the customer's experience at all. Nine times out of ten, when I thank them for handing me my food, they just ignore me. The manager in this particular video should be fired for his very bad take on the situation.

McDonald’s drive through restaurant has a system of taking orders and a window where they just give you food and take your payment If they decided to take your orders they will basically have you wait there, make the shakes, give it to you holding back the people behind you, the people behind you ordered with the person talking so they probably already have their order ready. This deaf couple standing there is holding up the line if they decide to walk to the ringer and load up the orders and make you the shake then bring it to you in the same window that would be basically just waiting over the counter kind of wait. In my 12 years of retail, ive had deaf folks come into my job quite a couple times and NEVER have i EVER seen them go through what you did at my job. What a horrible experience, I'm annoyed that they treated you that way. I met a gal who used hearing aids, so she can sign but she mostly speaks to us. I asked her whats the best way to communicate with deaf folks. And im here thinking, "ok gotta take up ASL classes now." She said, honestly, just writing it down is good enough. Which is something i had been doing anyway. Made much more sense to write it down than turn them away. God bless you and your family. I don’t understand why the cashier couldn’t just read the order on his iPhone screen and just treat it like every order she got that day. Are the employees not allowed to read? It’s so weird and disrespectful to this young man who did nothing wrong. I hope that at the very least someone from corporate apologized to him and retrained the staff at that location. I work retail and I’ve had a few deaf customers in my store, but every time they would tap on their ear I knew that meant they were hearing impaired, and I just ring them up and did what I always do, it didn’t affect any part of the transaction, as customers with any disabilities don’t affect any part of my job. I’m glad that my work wouldn’t treat someone with hearing difficulties like this.
