In Oregon we all laugh at the exploding whale. Paul Linman was the reporter who covered the event. And the event nearly covered him.

I had his son Jason Linnman as a teacher, his son is a great guy, I'm sure his dad, despite having to see an exploding whale, was also a good man haha and of course his son taught me this fact; showed the video in class

Fun fact about that "eating pills instead of food" trope - it's nonsense, and you can figure this out pretty easily with math. The most energy-dense substance we can easily access is gasoline, so use that as a basis for comparison. Assuming the average human consumes 2000 Calories a day, (and assuming i've done the math right) then that equates to about a quarter cup of gasoline. So in order to replace food with pills you'd need to find some kind of chemical(s) with an energy density several times higher than gasoline which, unlike gasoline, is nontoxic and bioavailable. If you can't do that, then you'd have to eat so many pills each day that you might as well just have food.

See, Erin, you leave me with so many questions. Is this entry on here because you really like lobsters? Or do you just really like endocrine and urinary based facts? How did you learn this? What exactly was going on in your life the day you learned this? Was this a rabbit hole adventure of knowledge or was it just something you chanced upon? What aspect of this resonated with you so hard? What was your back up 2nd place choice? Would it too have been excratorily based? Or would it have been face based? Or would it have been Lobster based? Also, why is a fact about No.1 listed as No. 2? I'm going to lay awake at night for weeks trying to figure out what led you down that path.

Wombats, and the other marsupials, are really really weird. You should do a whole episode on them. Male platypuses have venomous spines on their back legs. And they can detect electrical impulses from muscles movements with sensors in their beaks. For starters....

Regarding the whale story: IIRC, that "damaged" Oldsmobile was a convertible that had its entire roof crushed by a 3 ft (1 meter) chunk of rotting whale blubber. I'm sure the car was a total loss. If not for the damage, then at least for the smell. I hear blubber stinks like hell when it's fresh. I can't imagine what it would smell like after rotting in the sun for days.

@greenredblue3 жыл бұрын
Maybe it would have been a good idea if they could have gotten it to fully oxidize in the process, but that's not really what high explosives are good at. They're reactive, not incindiary. Make the explosion bigger and it just spreads rancid meat over a larger area.
