I love the way the kids are sort of ghostly like and this painting. Thank you for inviting us to share your work. Real enjoyable.

Charlie, what I see is “less is more” I’m trying to achieve that thought as a new-ish oil painter at a ripe old age….I love your work, and descriptions make it even better….. I co like the glazing colors ..soft color where needed, I also want to learn your patience as you ‘look awhile, decide, and make changes’ and not get frustrated in the process…..so I’m learning painting, and great artist demeanor….more, please

So easy to get frustrated! Just step back from the painting, drink some coffee, and go 'hmmmmmmm.....'

Love that you have your father's book. That's special. I'm still smiling about A Pond Called Dangerous!

Wonderful analysis of your process, will be interesting to see how you resolve the issues you discussed and see the final piece. Thank you.

Was the picture the your painting from the only picture you have of the family farmhouse and barns? I love old barns… grew up living three houses from a small farm in a scenic and historic town of Wolcott, Connecticut.

I really like how these figures, just as they r in the thumbnail for the link, look like memories. Ghosts r too morbid, thats not how they make me feel. Just an imprint on the space. I wouldnt change a thing. Thank u for sharing, ur work is always fantastic.

You’re a living master. I love it

Sometimes, Karen, when the cats are eddying about my feet at the top of the stairs, I very nearly become a formerly-living master. Thanks for your kind words.

love the left side, maybe a bit darker. Go a bit darker on the figures, but they're interesting being ghostley. So this is all about teaching, right? Just interested in what your focus is?

I love this painting and your art Charlie. You captured an evocative scene with some mysterious poignancy but then your narrative shattered my mood with a gratuitous political throwaway. Sadly, a wet blanket in an otherwise tranquil passage.

I am sorry you found my civic engagement triggering. It's part of the totality. Go in peace.

the closup on the rough foliage detail is amazing how do you accomplish that with your tools. Thanks from Canada, love your stuff. Nancy

Love this piece, Charlie! I see what you mean about bringing some small detail forward somewhere in the figures - but it would be easy to overdo this. The combination of your palette, subtle tones, and lost edges hearkens back to memories that I can't even name. That's what makes this such a wonderful piece. Thank you!

Love your paintings … could you please comment on the painting on the floor to the right of your easel and looks like a carriage done in beautiful copper and brown tones? Thanks

BRAVO- that was wonderful! I had registered for your SAS workshops which have sadly been postponed so i'm so happy that i found this talk. This piece is dreamy, very compelling indeed. BRAVO

Wonderful, Liz! Yes, we postponed SAS until early 2022. This darn Covfefevirus.

You have asked for our opinion and so I'll give you mine I want it's worth? I've said it before and I'll say it again. I love the ghostly appearance of your fingers that's what draws me to this painting they're just about dead center but you made it work I don't know so much about the red on the left makes me wonder, what is it doing there and what is it is it something spelled on the work itself?... my opinion the work is finished and (I love the figures fading out in time. ( Perfect❤) 🙂

Don't know if you watch for comments here, but if the figures were more pronounced/ darker at the heads but then graduated down to the current value by the feet might be interesting. This would establish them separate from the distant values.

This is reasonably fine! Actually, the impression is of a memory, impression of a memory.

Thank you so much for the safflower oil suggestion. I struggle so much to get my first layer of cobra down. I feel like I’m fighting with the paint. And the medium does not help. It’s fine for later on in the painting but generally too heavy to start with. I just use water in the beginning and it just doesn’t get it. Especially when I just want to throw some washes down. I will put a little bit in the beginning so that I don’t make the paint too slow drying. Maybe add a little bit more as I progress. And then use the cobra medium in the end. 🙏

Kathy - yeah, that sounds right. Just add a little, to see what it does. I find it a life-saver.

I love this painting...I love how the trees turned out but I think I would make the figures a little more defined too....but other than that it's just a fascinating piece and what a great story!! Thank you!!

Love the left hand side and feel it is more evocative of the slightly wilder barn side of the road vs. the more structured homestead side. Do like the idea of a bit more for the figures, but not too much.

on the kids..use a tiny bit of faded color maybe with the rose in the upper left corner.

Thank you! Great talk and beautiful painting. Love that stone wall. For the wall on the left, it looks really good too. Like the finish on the white trees about 25% into the painting. It feels like a more developed rock could work in that area. Your sensibilities, seem to be guiding you to an evocative place for your brother and his little friend. I saw your painting of the Farmall H, brought back memories for me. I grew up around barns, rock walls and skating ponds, so completely love your work. Do you know why John Deere's are painted green? So they can hide in the grass when a Farmall goes by!

Debra - Thanks for your comments. Still weighing final actions on that piece. I was glad to learn about the coloring of a Deere.

Agree with everyone that the figures need to be separated from the road with a little change in value.

I love this painting, but I do think the figures need a little more weight/body, a little less ethereal I guess.
