Revolutionary France fought against and defeated a Prussian, Spanish, Austrian and British invasion. Plus they stopped the royalists who were helping the invaders. They fought against insane odds and won and yet people mock the French and say they can't fight. Its also important to note the morale of the soldiers. The French soldiers were fighting for the revolution and their country to prevent the monarchy and the aristocrats from regaining power. The Prussians were fighting for their aristocratic leaders who were scared of the revolution spreading into Prussia. They had no morale plus it was not even their country they were fighting on.

But in a fight with an even power, they lose, just like in 1870/71, in the 7 Years' War. And what you seemingly don´t know, is that during the Revolutionary Wars, no country fought the French seriously, except for the Austrians.

To sum it up : -The Prussians cross Northern France unimpeded, the discipline grows lax, logistics falls behind and disease spread across the army, wich devolve into a crawling horde when arriving before Paris. -The disorganized French army mobilize, and block the path to the capital. Not wanting to risk a clash, Brunswick, the Prussian general, orders his canons to bombard the French, who stand their ground, respond with their own artillery, sing the Marseillaise, and basically transform their side of the battlefield into some sort of revolutionary festival, with many civilians hanging around. -Brunswick realizes he risk to get attacked in the rearguard by another French army led by Dumouriez. He launch an offensive to test the ground, but the French are pumped with patriotic fervor (and alcohol) and the attack is pushed back. The Prussians decides to retreat, and, their elan broken, are forced to rush back towards the rest of their army in North-East France. Kellerman, who motivated the French troops all day, is proclaimed a hero, and the republic is proclaimed the next day. The French lost 300 men, the Prussians 180. The battle is above all a demonstration of the importance of the enthusiasm the revolution has for the common soldier, and of the necessity to keep a bagage train in good order even during a successful campaign.

Valmy was won by a meritocratic artillery corp unaffected by emigres officer defections. And once they secured the hill the Prussians only retreated to avoid further catastrophic losses, so it was a tactical defeat rather than a strategic one. Up to now, the reason for why Brunswick decided to withdraw completely from France after Valmy remains a mystery. But it was good to credit the federe volunteers for the victory. Good PR and morale and stuff.

J'ignore votre position à ce sujet mais je suis pour la révolution française, je trouve qu'elle était nécessaire, mais les costumes sont absolument ridicules, ils ne ressemblent à rien, surtout ceux des officiels. Dans Barry Lindon le moment ou il rencontre les premiers prussiens sur la route, à cheval est génial, j'avais envie de m'engager :) Ah les petits tricornes, les boutons partout, les couleurs ! A cette époque la guerre était une boucherie (ce qu'elle a toujours été) mais quelle allure, quel courage aussi, les gens s'étripaient les yeux dans les yeux, pas à coup de drônes et de tapis de bombes... Désolé, je papotte tjrs beaucoup...

+Shmavy James IMO, the extras, the equipment and uniforms used make this scene are very credible and much better than the TV Napoleon series.I know that historically Valmy was mainly a cannonade.This was a production made to commemorate the 200 aniversary of the French Revolution and was lavish supported by the french government. This generosity was put to good use in a superb recreation of th FR.

Artillery still fire explosive shells though, as they always have done in movies... The accuracy of this film is terrible, the fighting at Valmy was nothing like this, Most of the French troops would have still worn royal white uniforms...

Cet extrait est très représentatif de ce que l'on m'a appris à l'école. Mais c'est du pipô. La victoire de Valmy c'est pas ça du tout. En résumé: un bref échange d'artillerie qui montre aux prussiens que l'on a du matos, puis les prussiens réalisent que les armées de l'Est (Kellerman) ont pu réaliser leur jonction avec celle de Dumouriez, ce qui veut dire qu'il y a une troupe conséquente... du coup les prussiens retournent chez eux. On leur avait promis une conquête sans vrai combat.. C'est moins révolutionnairement glorieux, mais plus proche de la réalité ;-)

Valmy fut une belle cannonade dans le brouillard. Il n'y a pas eu de corps à corps. L'armée française avait l'avantage du terrain sur une de ces cuestas de l'est du bassin parisien qui ont arrêté tant d'invasions. Le site se visite avec un petit musée. 10-15 000 hommes de chaque côté : on est loin des batailles napoléoniennes. Elle démontre surtout que la renaissance de l'armée française après la désertion des officiers passa par l'artillerie. En Bretagne elle servit à tenir à distance les navires anglais. Le siège de Toulon avec Bonaparte en est un autre exemple.

Yes almost, it was a little battle with almost no fight because the Prussians didn't know the French had such a good artillery, so they went back to Prussia because they knew the Prussian people could have revolted too because of the useless Prussian deaths trying to invade a neighbor country.

@@irov5884 Propaganda. It was a full scale battle, but the Prussians hoped an easy victory and were nearly severed from their communication line. So they had to hastily retreat. And Prussian King had no problem with soldiers (subjects and foreigners) killed to invade neighbours, they did it all the time (Silesia, Poland, even Belgium... France was simply too hard for them).

Valmy est une victoire miraculeuse semble t-il liée à un arrangement. On a retrouvé des diamants de la couronne de Marie - Antoinette dans la succession du Duc de Brunswick bien mou pendant cette bataille et prompt à battre en retraite.Et on raconte aussi que les Prussiens avaient la dysenterie pour avoir mangé des raisins trop verts dans cette région riche en vignobles.Plus de 3000 étaient morts avant même de livrer bataille à Valmy

C'est vrai, d'autant que c'est le point fort de toute la bataille. Pas de grosse mêlée épique, mais les citoyens qui tiennent le terrain sous le feu des canons et chantent pour se donner du courage.

Not all 'hostorical films' are historically accurate. from what I've seen. there are a lack of uniformry in the French line infantry formation. AFAIK by then a full strengh line infantry usually consisted of 120 troops led by an officier and some 10 NCOs, the helmet saw here was worn by Cavs (especially the Dragoons), only Austrian lines wear this similar helmet. (and by that time Shako wasn't introduced either!) if it is historically accurate then the unit might be a light infantry rather than line ones.

As is often the case in these movie depictions, inaccuracy outweighs accuracy - units are too small, too close together and the combat is generally unhistorical. Warfare of this period was more about manoeuvre and firepower and less about hand to hand fighting, but film makers always want to have hundreds of men stabbing each other because its more dramatic.

VALMY a été une Bataille courte avec peu de pertes mais une Bataille tout de même : Les Prussiens ne s'attendaient pas que la ligne Française tienne ( sans les Officiers émigrés...) et le CANON Gribeauval ( création française sous Louis XV début du règne de Louis XVI a fait merveille..c'était le meilleur canon de son époque et ce fut le principal canon de l'épopée napoléonienne...) a fait merveille. Donc ce petit film est juste ! Effectivement les révolutionnaires girondins étaient franc maçon mais leurs loges étaient bien éloignées des loges Templières aristocratiques prussiennes du XVIII e siècle finissant : deux Mondes bien différent ! Je rappelle que les jacobins montagnards rousseauistes à l'affut en 1792 et précisément ROBESPIERRE n'étaient pas franc maçons ! pourtant ce sont eux l'Esprit de la Révolution ! Pfff ! N'importe quoi ! Valmy ne s'est pas DU TOUT passée comme ça ! Ce fut un échange d'artillerie entre prussiens et français. Les français étaient trop désorganisés pour monter à l'assaut et les prussiens avaient été victimes d'une épidémie de dysenterie qui avait rendu leur infanterie inopérante à ce moment-là. Resta quelques tirs d'artillerie de part et d'autres dont un boulet prussien qui toucha une réserve de munitions située à côté du fameux moulin de Valmy et tua ou blessa plusieurs dizaines de français. Malgré cette perte, les français maintenaient leurs positions défensives au niveau de Valmy, interdisant la possibilité d'une invasion de Paris. Incapables de prendre l'avantage l'un sur l'autre les deux belligérants restèrent sur leurs positions mais, heureusement, le temps n'était pas encore trop à la guerre de tranchées (si ça s'était passé en 1914, les prussiens se seraient enterrés) : au lieu de ça, ils ont reculé car (comme pendant la bataille de la Marne) leur avancée trop rapide les avait éloignés de leurs bases et rendait leur ravitaillement impossible (raison pour laquelle ils devaient piller et amasser la nourriture par eux-mêmes...et paraît-il cueillir des pommes pas mûres qui seraient responsables de leur mauvaise santé). Ce fut une fausse bataille mais montée en épingle par la république qui manquait cruellement de succès et qui fut alors transformée en grande victoire politique de la "liberté" sur les monarchies...ce qui était faux : la vraie grande victoire française de cette phase des guerres de la révolution, ce fut celle de Fleurus ... à laquelle ces images correspondent mieux qu'à celle de Valmy.
