To get this topic as accurate as we can, we have to first know the measurements in tolkien’s world. The Ranga, or Full Pace, was a Númenórean linear measure it was said to be slightly longer than a yard, or 38 inches, this means 3'2", or 96.5cm. Now, the typical heights of elves of Elronds generation for male elves are lesser than the stature of the elves of the elder years. These elves were on average 7 to 7 and a half feet, while the Numenoreans were 7 feet which makes them of a higher stature than other lesser men of the earlier ages that were less than two rangars tall. One of the tallest man ever was Elendil who was 2 1/2 rangar high or 7′11″tall.
Then we can again take another point for example. Elu Thingol, one of the three ambassadors of the Elves who first saw the Two Trees and was counted among the Calaquendi, was described as tallest of all the Children of Ilúvatar, that is, Elves and Men. This means that at minimum he was taller than elendil who was 7’11 and thus makes him 8 feet or more.

I've always taken Tuor to be the tallest of the Edain UNTIL THEN, not also of those yet to be born. Also, the term "Edain" could be interpreted as the men of the three houses of the first age, without necessarily including their descendants that lived in Numenor, who were not normal men. In essence, I don't think Tuor would be of Numenorean stature. Maybe in the same range as Aragorn or Eomer (which are both VERY tall already). I also doubt Beor would be 4 meters tall. Last, i don't think there's any reason to think Thranduil is on the same range of Gil-Galad, especially if his son is comparatively so short.

Yeah, for the case of Tuor, your argument seems to have valid points but his house hador or the marach folk are said to be very tall. As for Beorn, there's either or, you know what I mean, either 13'0 or 9'0. And for Thranduil's case, Legolas was born in the third age while he was of the first age, so he might be taller but not First Age Noldor tall.

Agree. In general, elves are taller than men and what makes numenorians very tall is... elf blood.

Gil-Galad was born during the first age so 6" 6' is probably on the short side. Your upper estimate is probably closer. I sincerely doubt the Witch King was 7 feet tall, he wasn't a Númenórean and some of the other Wraiths were of Eastern (Arab) stock who are smaller than the men of the West which is why he's the tallest. The reason Sam and Frodo were able to pass as Orcs in Mordor is because the height range of an Orc is around Dwarf height and Tolkien describes a "huge" Orc Captain as "almost man height". I sincerely doubt the Goblin King remotely close to 10 feet. Morgoth in his prime is described as being as large as a mountain. As a Mair he could be as tall as he wanted.

A few of the nazgul were numenoreans and since he was stated to be the tallest, its just a given that the witch King was 7-7'5

Gandalf likely only appeared to be that height most of the time due to his extremely humble nature, wanting to remain unassuming and nonthreatening, i.e. just an old man. In the books he is described as appearing to grow taller at times when he is angered or ready for battle. LotR book1, Chapter 1: "He took a step towards the hobbit, and he seemed to grow tall and menacing; his shadow filled the little room." LotR book2, Chapter 5: "He sprang to Boromir's side and drew himself up to his full height."

I'm extremely suspicious about what you state (with all respect for a very well made video) about elves height, even for the First and Second Age, since as I clearly recall there are also some contradictory indications from some texts that elves can be shorter than men, and I mean, much shorter : for instance, Beleg, when he is mistakenly killed by his human friend Turin, I recall that the explanation given is that Turin, in the darkness, takes him for an orc because of his body size... And we're quite sure that the average orcs are short since hobbits can disguise as one of them...Sure enough, Beleg is a Sindar and not a Noldo, but can the discrepancy be so great between higher elves and the Sindar, who are but the second ones ? It always seemed to me that Tolkien hesitated (perhaps consciously) between understanding Elves as sort of higher, stronger, and fairer humans, and taking them as "the small folk" of old English legends... And let's remember that Tolkien, in fact, *never* directly describes any particularity of their physique (a whole video would be needed on that BTW). So I'm not sure there is a definitive lesson from Tolkien himself, and that we can be assertive here. A whole compilation of indications from Tolkien, wether from books or other materials (for instance the one you so brilliantly quote about the 70s calendar) would be needed to settle the question. Thanks again anyway (and sorry for the multiple edits)

Given the inconsistencies in Tolkien's texts regarding elf height and characteristics, how do you think these variations impact our understanding of elven identity
@a.bettik8698
@a.bettik8698 3 сағат бұрын
@@AncientWildTV Thanks for asking, I'd say that this should impact the way we understand the spirit of Tolkien worlbuilding as a whole. While we often want to read his books as sort of pre-rpg type fantasy, with defined species and science-like coherence, in this we are very far from his own intentions, since I think he deliberately decided to let lots of details to the imagination, even letting such discrepancies as a veil of mystery. This can be seen in the fact that he almost doesn't give any clue about the physical traits of species as important in his lore as elves, orcs, or trolls, for instance (all we are told about is their beauty, their fangs and hair, and their nose or scales, respectively). He want this ambiguity to be part of his story telling, I believe. Subdued uncertainty, not modern cinematographic hyper-imagination, makes the fabric of epic fiction, for this reader of ancient tales.
