I'm a bit amazed, these are the exact same techniques that I used to paint 9 Imperial Guard vehicles in like 4 days. Only difference was that I masked WW1 British tank like stripes on the sides and gave them an edge highlight using watercolour pencil, that took like an hour for all 9 tanks.

Sometimes, the best way to overcome the barrier of getting a big project done is to turn it into many smaller projects. You don't need to do a whole tank tonight - or 20 of them - you just need to mask them all off, or do all of one color. Give yourself the benefit of little dopamine hits for a job well done. I've been doing #Dungeon23 this year. Making a Megadungeon with 365 rooms is a lot less daunting when it's just one room a day. When I've filled out the room, I'm done for the day. Easy. Also, this talk about oil washes has reminded me to do the washes on my terrain.
@CocoHutzpah Жыл бұрын
I've sped up painting my Guard vehicles by leaving the tracks off until I'm ready to wash over the whole model. Without having an airbrush, I give them about 15 seconds of Rustoleum black primer and it does the trick for me. I'm definitely going to try some of these steps for the next batch.

It's quite fascinating as a newcomer to see how 40K is really three intermingling interests: lore, painting and gaming combined and prioritised in so many different ways. This video is a great example of that! I'm personally intimidated by the rules and mostly into lore and painting, so it's cool to hear a lore and gaming focused take on painting. It'd be fun to hear a chat between you and someone like Brent from Goobertown Hobbies who's all about the painting and not much else (he has a good video about quitting halfway through the Horus Heresy series, by the way). Different perspectives, but equal parts of the hobby ✌ PS. "The Anti-brush Method" has a nice ring to it, I think 😄

Always paint how you want to paint and have fun. That’s the only aim that matters. Never let pressure or high expectations steal joy. If army painting feels monotonous or stressful then try painting an individual or squad. Mix it up. A hobby is an awesome opportunity for experimentation.

Even as someone who loves painting almost as much as I love modelling/converting, there's a lot to like in your method. While I love fiddly details (I collect Tau, that's kind of their thing) I really don't go in for trying to simulate things OSL or edge highlighting (I let the light in the room do that) and I find when doing tiny details there's a temptation to "over narrativize" (to coin a term) all the little details - how did this scratch get there, let's put some mud flicked up over there etc. In practice the only person scrutinizing your models that closely is you when you're painting it, and a few randomized details will let the viewer's imagination fill in the rest of the detail for you!
@Andernol Жыл бұрын
I do actually enjoy painting but I agree that building/kit bashing is much more fun. I actually tend to build and paint bunches and bunches of HQs/Elites from armies I will never build just bc I like the models (and I don't have enough money/people to play full armies with). Tanks absolutely intimidate me however. I painted a single Black Templars Land Raider early on into entering the hobby, and while rattle canning it black was easy, painting massive panels white was such a nightmare I've been scared to work on them since. I need to just bite the bullet and get at least a cheap airbrush but being in college makes it much tougher.

Huh this is a nice video. Thank you for presenting your ideas. I too have a large sizable pile of shame that I know that I'll need to get working on. The largest force will be my Iron Hands Legionaries force (Think many tanks, dreadnoughts, and around 200 infantry). Other forces will include their successors force (Iron Wolves), a sisters of battle force, inquisition, a massive Imperial guard force, corsairs, and even a sizable amount of Battletech units. This doesn't even include the heavy gear minis, various rpg figs, gunpla, and much much more. I don't have a airbrush so this will probably slow me down on the final project design.

Varnish before wash is very interesting I feel like most varnish last
@ArbitorIan Жыл бұрын
The gloss varnish before the wash not only protects the paintwork below from the bit when I 'clean' them with a bit of foam, it also forms a very shiny, smooth surface for the wash. That way the wash runs into the cracks more and also can be removed much more easily once the spirit has evaporated. Without that gloss layer, it's really hard to get the oil paint off again! Then the matte varnish at the end is for sealing and overall look.
