I went to Oahu to visit family, not as a true 'tourist'. I was impressed with downtown Honolulu. It was clean and lively and safe. It was surprising to see chickens downtown. Some of the streets lanes are rather skinny. It made me a little nervous when I was driving. I was sad to see all the homeless people. We did go to Big Island as tourist and were so amazed by the volcanos and the varied lava flows/fields and the ranches!

When i used to live in hawaii it was literally a house party almost every day. Someone was having some type of BBQ that lasted all day and night, it was the best. Great people and energy, plan to move back someday soon.

I was soooo excited to be going to Hawaii. I almost expected it to not live up to my expectations. From my first morning there I was in awe, it was even more spectacular than I had imagined. People there are very friendly. Easygoing, willing to chat, but also very clear that statehood was not highly endorsed by the native Hawaiians. They were forced into a statehood they never asked for, after the islands were illegally seized by the US.

I'm surprised that folks are shocked by the high end stores here and having the largest open air shopping center (Ala Moana). We are located in the middle of the Pacific surrounded by Asia, the U.S., etc. and conduct businesses internationally. I mean, even 'Iolani Palace had electricity in 1887 before the White House. We're quite modern here on O'ahu.

Someone posted in another video (about shopping) that when they were growing up, 30 years ago, Ala Moana had more of the koi pond and less high end stores. So maybe people are reading outdated tour books / memoires?

The reason why there are so much Asian influence in Hawaii is because by 1910, 90% of the Native Hawaiian population had died off from diseases brought to the islands. The owners of the sugar plantations needed cheap labor so they brought in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipinos, Puerto Ricans and Portuguese to work the plantations. The Japanese alone had brought in more than 200,000 workers, so by the early 1920's, the Japanese was the largest ethnic group in Hawaii. A lot of the local Asians you see in Hawaii today are the descendants of the plantation workers. The plantations are also where we got Hawaiian Pidgin English from, all the different groups working on the plantations needed a common language.

My first visit was in 2013. The shockers for me were the high end stores on Kalakaua in Waikiki (Tiffany/ Chanel), the people riding in the back of pickups (did I go back in time to 1975??) the sand for on the beach at Waikiki is trucked in from elsewhere, and for the Big Island- they call it that for a reason! Everywhere takes so much longer to get to! When you talked about the rain, you forgot to mention the 2-to-4-inch-per-hour 'flash flooding' rain. We like that rain too. It is just amazing that that much liquid can fall from the sky!

This was a funny shocker for me...I grew up in CA. My Mom had this huge red hibiscus bush in the backyard. My first trip to Hawaii, imagine my surprise when I saw hibiscus in all different colors.

I lived in Honolulu.... this is all pretty accurate! The winter rain is no joke. I couldn’t walk to work those months. Also, you will VERY rarely every hear thunder or see lightning. Great video! ☺️

We were there in March. It was our first time there. I was amazed at the number of homeless on Waikiki beach. They would sleep tight in the beach and many stayed even when the beaches got busy during the day. HPD did a good job of making sure they didn't bother the tourists. Also we were amazed by and saddened by the size of the tent cities under the H1. Oahu was still gorgeous tho. We'd love to return and see Maui and the big island.

I’ve enjoyed many of your videos. My husband and I first visited Oahu in 1987 on our honeymoon. Our son lives there now and we’ve visited him a couple times, 2018 and 2019. We will be there again this fall. I was very surprised about the waves in winter and summer on different sides of the island and the different weather patterns. Love you guys!

Hey riding in the back of a pickup truck was fun! We did it as kids! And yeah, if Asians bother you, Hawaii's not the place for you. Those "buses non-Japanese tourists can't get on" are chartered buses which are common. The public bus system isn't doing this, this is private tour companies. Ala Moana used to be a lot smaller but it was always about the biggest shopping center in the US. Those koi fish in the ponds, I literally grew up with those fish in that they were small when I was small, and we got big together over the years. As for the islands being different, just different parts of Oahu are very different. As for hiking, yeah it's a thing. We always did it barefoot. Never saw a wild pig. I've never heard anyone call those little sprinkles "pineapple rain" we always called it "liquid sunshine". I always knew Hawaii grows its own coffee because my older brother worked for a while picking it. As for Spam, it's great in saimin! And don't forget spam musubi.

Your videos feel like talking to friends which is really a good thing. Great information! My first trip to Oahu was in 2004 and the things that shocked me most were the Asian influence (being from the mainland, I wasn't aware at the time that Hawai'i is like four hours to Japan and many Asian influences also came from the labor brought in over a century ago), everybody was in the minority (which seemed to create more harmony), the love of Spam (we had one can of Spam growing up and I swear it stayed in the kitchen cabinet until I became an adult lol), rice with everything (goes back to the Asian influence) and the Spirit of Aloha (I was treated like family by pretty much everyone I encountered - aunties, uncles and cousins, was a lot of love). What shocked me the most when I came to Hawaii is how laid back people are and how nice the locals can be. Our last visit we've decided to stay by Waianae and that's an experience on its own. Best beach in the island, but need to know that its a different kind of atmosphere in that area. Even though we loved staying closer to local living, i felt bad that my kids didn't get to fully experience to be a tourist in Hawaii. Staying in Waikiki will be a better fit for your first visit, to get that full tourist experience. But the beach in Makaha which is only 10 minutes away from Waiamea is breathtaking!

You guys are about 30 years too late. Waikiki and Oahu was much different back in the 80s. It has changed for the worse. I lived on Oahu for 11 years from 80-91 .... The best time to be on Oahu. Waikiki used to be a long strip of bars. We partied till the sun came up. My last trip there was in 2010... I've been back to Hawaii many times since then, however, I only visit Kauai and Maui. Hope to be buying a home in Maui soon for retirement.... And those buses you mentioned that only allow Japanese tourist groups, used to be free. We used to call it the booze cruise bus. Because everyone would ride to Aloha Tower to party. Back then we had some great musical groups jammin at the Aloha Tower. Best time of my life....So grateful.

When I was a kid California side I often rode in the back of the truck. I moved to Hawaii when I was 18 and never stopped. When I moved here in '90 there were a few super "High Class" shops at Ala Moana mall. It has changed about 15 times since I worked there in the '90s. Roosters & chickens don't bother me, I live in the country. I grew up surrounded by Asian people, and hung out with them Vegas side too. I ate Spam for the first time here. Grandpa had it too much in the War and it was never served in our home. I was around a lot of Malihini haoles before, some loved it here, others couldn't stand it, same with black people.

I live just outside Dallas, TX. I was able to spend nine days on Oahu in February of 2016. I saw more rainbows during those nine days that I have seen in the five years since. My friend Tracy went on about the lack of brick buildings.

Not only do you see the same high-end and very expensive designer-brand stores, many of these are really big ones as well, being two or three stories tall. And there are multiple locations too, not far apart: big Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, Harry Winston, Prada, etc. stores in both Ala Moana Center and in Waikiki too.

Good job, guys! I clicked on this thinking you would be giving false information, but you are spot on! Weren't you also shocked that in many eateries, entrees come with rice? Here, we eat a lot of things with rice that mainlanders usually eat with potatoes or crackers such as chili and stew. It is also true about the Tacomas, but we like our Japanese vehicles in general. Toyota, Honda, and Nissan far outnumber American brands like GM, Ford and Chrysler.

I went a few years ago to O’ahu and the things that shocked me most was the lack of seeing native Hawaiians and the drop in the Aloha spirit. I had been going to the islands since the 1970’s. The level of gentrification changes the feel as I had problems feeling I was truly welcome and not just a visitor. Prior, every truck or shuttle driver would Shaka each other as they passed. I stayed for 10 days and had only seen it once. Sad to lose that custom.

Wife has family in Oahu since the 80s. Been going to Maui and Oahu for the last 12. The amount of locals being vocal to me has increased dramatically over the years. So much hate. I live in Oregon and I tell visitors from Hawaii I would be rude and tell them to go back to the island but I do not. I remind them to teat mainlanders kindly.

I listened to another video and spam became a thing during WW2. The Japanese were restricted from fishing so there was a food shortage. And the people embraced spam just as Native Americans embrace fry-bread. And I was also shocked yesterday when I accidentally rode(on my rented scooter) thru the main drag Waikiki. They are absolutely correct on all the high end stores there. Daaaanng.

II am visiting here for month of May from Ca. Have been coming for years and it is the most beautiful place. We stay in Waikiki. This is 5 weeks after opening up .We go to the beach at Hilton Hawaiian Village. Sad to see people smoking and drinking on the beach with their beer cans and coolers. Even in the water with the beer cans and bottles. What has happened to beautiful Waikiki ?

illegal to smoke and drink (State Law) on the beaches...you can call 911 (non-emergency) to report if you want to...i would gather to say they are the tourists who don't know the rules or look at the signs before stepping onto the beach...maybe they don't look up past 8 feet of a pole. .

Lot's of locals do that as well. We often see locals with huge tents set up on the beach, coolers filled with beer and some of them do smoke right of the beach as well.

Let’s not forget about how ghetto it is. I lived in Kam4 before the remodel back in 96-99 and it was so hood. A lot of housing projects and gangs back then. Also, everyone and their mama is ethnically mixed. The women are hella fine bc of the mixing 😍

Maui doesn’t have any of the things that are on Oahu! I don’t know of shopping areas that look as nice as Oahu. There is such a difference between the islands. Sadly we don't have a lot of the chain restaurants here Chinese is hard to come by. Pizza we have Domino’s, Round Table and Pizza Hut. The best areas are Wailea, Kaanapali and Kapalua. I was so shocked when I saw a KZbin video of Oahu. So many high rises and high-end stores. Its parks are beautiful too. I have never been there. It's a real city. I plan to visit though!
