Please do not recommend to disable the GRUB menu. I personally had a problem about a year ago (it was a different distro - elementary OS), where there had been an incompatibility on my system between the Nvidia drivers and the kernel after an update, and the system could not start the graphical desktop anymore. Back then, the GRUB menu on my system had been disabled; the problem would have been much easier to work around if the menu had been there, because booting from the old kernel or using recovery mode (both available via Advanced Options in the GRUB menu) would have booted the system again. When that happened, it took the elementary/Ubuntu base about two or three weeks, until another update fixed the problem. So - better shorten the timeout to 2 or 3 seconds if you want, but don't disable it completely. That would be my personal advice. Otherwise - great content. Thanks for posting :)

Thank you for the video, load of handy information. I moved to OpenSUSE after a few years of using Mint, and after a few months of Manjaro (that disappointed me with its instability). So far, I've been enjoying OpenSUSE for its solidity and customizability. It helps me to go deeper into Linux OS, that was my intention. YAST is a decent tool, that helps to keep everything in control. Best regards! P.S. My favourite audio player that I recommend to everybody is Audacious.

How easy is OpenSUSE to use for a Linux newbie like me? I had used MX Linux before (xfce and kde, the latter being my favorite, although both were running on a bootable USB) and it was really easy to use. Also, is it good for gaming (have on mind that I don't have a gaming PC) and audio editing?
@czerwonysledz
@czerwonysledz 3 жыл бұрын
@@xylogram4168 I think it's quite easy still. It's good for gaming - Steam and Wine are working well (currently I'm playing Witcher 3 for example, GOG version, no issues at all). As for audio editing - I can't say, I'm not dealing with this.

Great guide. thanks for sharing! I followed this and got a great system running. Later, I broke my system when in SuSE Software application, it showed 3 updates. When I clicked update, it applied all the updates and after reboot, I had no more sound. I was able to roll back from a snapshot, but i was not able to get the updates installed without breaking the system. When including the community repository and installing the codecs, what is the proper way to update/upgrade the system? Should I not use the Software application? Instead perhaps should I only use Zypper? do I need the "allow vendor change" option for all future upgrades?

in swappiness, what does the number 60 or 10 represent?
@matthiasbendewald1803
@matthiasbendewald1803 Жыл бұрын
It is a value that the kernel uses to decide when to use swap to increase the RAM cache usage. It is all about performance. 60 is the default everywhere because in normal circumstances it's just a very good compromise. Leave it as it is unless you know better.

That was a good guide. I love openSUSE but in my opinion it can get much better if they fixed some quirks here and there. For instance, why isn't the Nvidia driver getting updated when Tumbleweed gets a new kernel which causes a black screen? Other distros do it easily. DKMS packages for Nvidia are not always up to date and you have to get them from community repos to recompile locally. Some gaming packages are not found in the repos and have to be compiled from source.

How common are these black screen issues? Is openSUSE a good distro for light gaming on a 2018 laptop?
@cosmicvoid2207
@cosmicvoid2207 3 жыл бұрын
@@xylogram4168For Tumbleweed, If you have Nvidia and use NV proprietary driver (not nouveau driver) then the kernel you choose at boot has to match the driver if not you get a black screen. With any other GPU you'll be fine. Another way for this problem is to install the community (unofficial) DKMS packages. I prefer Leap as it does not have any of these issues since the kernel is not changed for the entire life cycle (only updated). I play heavy games like Tomb Raider on it and it's awesome.
