A good treat to leave them is trail mix. It has nuts and dried fruit and seeds. As a child i used to watch grandma leave ginger snaps (look like nilla waffers but made from ginger instead) with cinnamon sprinkled on top, a little milk in an old saucer (like a tiny plate for tea cups) and a couple pennies. She left them at the base of an old apple tree that stood in front of our house but other side of the road. Right behind the tree was a steep drop-off running down to a creek

@@winstonbbailey8740 in front of the house was a tiny yard, then a 1 lane dirt road, the old apple tree, then the hill drop off. The offering was left at the bottom of the apple tree. I've read a lot of these neopagan followers take the treats to a country crossroads and leave it in the north corner. But I don't see the point in that unless you live literally right beside it became gnomes etc are supposedly close to houses (the helpful ones anyway).

Here in Wisconsin we have legends of rock-throwing gnomes up in Fifield. Throw a rock into the woods, and the gnome throws a rock back. Interestingly the native cultures here also have stories of rock-throwing smallfolk, that legend explaining the distribution of erratics (boulders moved to strange places by glaciers) throughout the state.

I’ve always known from a young age that fairies and gnomes are magical beings that guard the earth. They also help flowers and fruits grow and that’s why we have beautiful gardens and farms. As long as we respect the earth and the land they will lend a helping hand and be fortunate. If we don’t respect the land they can become tricksters. I think the garden gnomes we have today are a representations of nature spirits. Long live the gnomes. .

What I find interesting is, when taking into account the special relationship described between gnomes and animals, they still eat small songbird eggs. Do not get me wrong, I love my eggs and meat, but find it interesting in this world and I cannot reconcile it unless there is some special agreement/trade taking place. Still, how do a good gnome who is a friend of birds, trade with them to eat their eggs (children)? Imagine this scene; "Oh, Hello Sally Birdinstein. I brought you some seeds. May I have some of your eggs?" Hehe! I would love some comments on this.

Eggs are fruit of an animal not a living animal. Also birds lay plenty of eggs. Choosing one might allow the other birds to be better fed by their mother. Nature is perfect.

Gather 'round, ye wee sprouts! Uncle Barnaby's got a tale to spin, a story o' our kin, the wondrous folk o' the gnome! Now, listen close, for gnomes are a diverse bunch, spread far and wide across this grand ol' earth. Some say we hail from the frosty north, where the first gnome sprung from the soil itself, tendin' to the land and its creatures. Others whisper we arose from the depths, miners who traded darkness for sunshine, lendin' a hand to the humans above. No matter our origin, one thing's for sure: we're tied to this earth, bone and beard. We're wee folk, aye, but strong as seven men, and faster than a startled hare. Our eyes are sharp as an eagle's, and some say we can even bend the very elements to our will, disappearing in a blink or shifting our shape to suit the moment. Now, humans, they're a curious lot. Some are friendly, respectin' our ways and the land we tend. They're the ones with gardens that burst with flavor, thanks to our touch. But others, well, they can be a bit clumsy, blunderin' through our homes without a care. And a gnome's got a temper, mind ye! We might play a prank or two, lead 'em astray with a mischievous grin. But cross us, and ye'll feel the wrath of the earth itself! We're a family, gnomes are, and we look after our own. We cherish the elders, their stories and wisdom passed down through generations. We love a good song and a lively dance, and our festivals are a sight to behold! And animals, bless their furry souls, they're our dearest friends. We protect them, and they return the favor, warnin' us of danger and sharin' their secrets. So, remember this, young 'uns: be proud o' yer gnome heritage. Tend to the land, respect yer elders, and never be afraid to lend a hand to those in need. And most importantly, keep a bit o' mischief in yer heart, for a good laugh and a clever prank are the spice o' life! Now, off ye go, and make this old uncle proud!

In 1979 in Wallaton Park, here in the UK, some children reported seeing gnomes at a place called The Swamp. It has become a bizarre but well known case. In Britain the stories of Gnome-like characters appear most concentrated in areas with historical strong Norse settlement and influence. Some alternative names are of Norse origin. "Gnome" has become a popular catch-all term for many local similar characters that once had different names. As for cave dwellers, troglodytes, have definitely existed and were real people on which gnomes could be based. One explanation I came across was the word "gnome" deriving from earth-dweller, from dead science, when everything was thought to be composed of fire, water, air, earth, with each having an elemental composed of the one element, in earth's case, the gnome. Some years ago I spoke to a young woman who years prior said she'd seen a gnome walking by the roadside as she went by as a passenger in her mother's car. Begging her mother to turn back to see the gnome her mother told her she was being silly, but in later years told her daughter she had actually seen the gnome herself.

Predominately covered in thick white hair with blue or bright eyes, broader of build than their cousins, they're shaped more like small dwarves, perfectly suited to these icy climes. They seem just as smart as any gnome, but they have no need, and never became civilized or have regressed to a nature more primitive than even the forest gnomes. I witness them conjure fire, and they use trinkets as if they were magical.
