I really enjoy your videos Doug. Such a wealth of information and watching you carve is far better than trying to learn the cuts from a book. I learn much better by watching than reading. I started this a little late in life. I am 68 yrs and started with cottonwood bark about 10 yrs ago but after moving to Saskatchewan from Ontario to a farm I put it aside so I could work on my property. I was hospitalized about 2 yrs ago due to an autoimmune attack on my spinal cord. While in hospital I asked my wife to bring my carving tools and workpiece to the hospital so I wouldn't go nuts from boredom. I was there for a month and the nurses regularly stopped to check on the carving progress. It certainly kept me busy and in good spirits. After finding your videos I have a renewed interest and really enjoying it. You mentioned that one day you would do a video on carving eyes. Did you make one after all? You made a great many videos and I am working my way through them. Congratulations on your sponsorship with Woodcarving Illustrative

I am also learning a bit late in life. As a girl scout so early in life, I was permitted a dull pocket knife, so I never really knew what fun carving could be. To Doug - Thanks for such clear instruction on carving and caring for knives.

Guys? Can we all take a moment to appreciate the little tricks Doug teaches, if you watch carefully? Like using his fingers as a “jig” along the side of the block of wood, so he can draw straight lines, accurately and quickly. 👍 For those of you new to his channel, Doug is a finish carpenter by trade. So he has a lifetime of tips and tricks that make his work/play easier…and he’s a heck of a nice guy to pass them on.

What a great carving (as always)! I started carving about a year ago inspired by your videos. Those little gnomes and (in my case) witches and knights brought a smile to the people I have gifted them to. So thanks and all the best to you! Btw: A gnome's beard is of the uttermost importance, you highlighted that quite well! :)

Unfortunately it never matters how good anyone's videos are. There will always be spiteful people who like to do these sorts of things. I completely agree though, there is, in my opinion no need for a dislike. Maybe 10 people have something against gnomes?

I've been trying to learn on basswood, but mine either isn't nearly THAT soft, or Doug your knives are razor's edge and then some or something - because it looks like you put so little muscle into those deep stop cuts. :) I'm always amazed at your work and how willing you are to share the techniques and knowledge with others. God bless you, man.

Owl Jones, your comment was made a while ago, have you got any insights? I’m trying my first whittling project on basswood too and it is NOT going smoothly! (I have some beavercraft knives, maybe they’re pretty bad. 🤷🏻‍♂️)

@@seadawg93 not OP but from what little I know razor sharp knives help a lot, keep them honed every 15 minutes of carving. But also basswood can be either kiln dried or air dried, aim for buying air dried as kiln dried is tougher to carve. Gonna start my own whittling journey soon so been doing a lot of research😅

As for the other great knives there ... some don’t ship to germany even if I was willing to wait and pay the shipping and customs. But just maybe there are knives similar to the US ones in Europe but I never noticed them til now?
