Watching this man defend is a literal work of art. The calm demeanor that he goes about his business is truly magnificent to watch. In the right place at the right time, every time. You hardly ever see VVD sprinting full speed, it´s rarely necessary for him. I haven´t actually lately checked the yellow card number, but it seems he almost never gets a card either. We just couldn´t have bought a better defender. Also, at the time, he had choices, plenty of clubs after him, some in much better position as Liverpool then, but he chose us, the Liverpool extended family. After the injury he was happy to extend his contract, as he felt the club and fans supported him fully even through rough patch. We have such a strong squad now, but still, VVD is the one who´d be missed the most, even over Mo and Alisson now that Kelleher seem so good. Fabinho being the next most important... But that is now very difficult comparison, it´s more about what we can replace a player with. This also changes during the season to some extent, but if I had to choose ONE player to stay fit and uninjured for a whole season, that would be VVD. Matip has been great, I hope Gomez can get back to his best, and Konate is just going to be VVD the next generation, for a beast he is already. Learning from VVD, getting experience, he will be among the greats of Liverpool CD´s. Just staying free of big injuries and sky´s the limit for him.
