100%. I love your design philosophy. The rules are important to learn, and great for focusing your craft, but at the end of the day the fun factor is vital

Great tip! That would be a perfect way to separate a scene

4:14 I’ve got an example I want to share in connection with this. I’ve got a game I’m starting drawing characters for and I had an idea of what I wanted, but I couldn’t figure out how to do it. I want to fit the characters within generally 36x48 dimensions, but I also wanted them to be very expressive with the eyes as their most important feature, and to have an almost chibi style to them, but with longer arms and legs that look like they could fight. It seemed impossible to have both of those main points at the same time. I kept looking at a lot of other sources for inspiration. Iconoclasts is one of the biggest sources of inspiration for my game, but their eyes are two pixels tall. Momodora was closer, but still not quite detailed enough for me. And then I remembered Freedom Planet, and I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it sooner! I’m not making a Sonic-style game, and I don’t want to copy their style too closely, but just how they do Lilac’s eyes is exactly what I wanted. Big and expressive, but without sacrificing too much real estate so as to not be able to incorporate some detail into the rest of the body, or even the rest of the head. I still changed my character’s eyes a bit further from from Lilac’s as I didn’t want it to be too reminiscent of Sonic - just have decent sized eyes, thick eyelashes, and a distinction between sclera, pupil, and iris.

Ok this is less with the actual creation and more how you implement it, kind of part of the consistancy rule but always scale your pixel art the same in engine!!! Pixel art should creaate the illusion that your looking into a world through a low res camera, and the individual pixels being different sizes shatters this illusion.

Hey! great video! when you were talking about layers, what software were you using? Is that Godot?

That was a program called Aseprite, a free art program exclusively focusing on pixel art! I definitely recommend it, it’s pretty widely used among pixel artists and indie game devs.
