The best part of it was that truck was so wantonly unnecessary; if he gives it to the fullback, he's in no worries, but evidently Lomu woke up and decided to actively seek conflict that day.

Tuilagi's pick and drive was unforgettable because of the context of the game, opposition etc, but as a try in itself was unremarkable. Lomu's try was far more significant in that for me it symbolised the end of amateurism and the beginning of the professional era. And it was a far better try, unless you're Mike Catt.
@timwilliams72882 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, nothing special about Tuilangi's try unless you are English. I am, but still don't think it rates at all. You see tries like that every weekend.
@Martin-pb7ts2 жыл бұрын
I think context for Tuilagi's try was important but Dominici's try in '99 was more devastating. That was the only time I have ever seen the All Blacks look shell shocked. The only time I have ever seen them without an answer to what was happening to them on the field.

The Blanco try in 1987 is incredible and only half of the action is shown. Australia only 15 seconds before where deep in the French 22 and looking to wrap the semi final up. One of the most brilliant but underrated tries was David Campese in the '91 semi-final v New Zealand. From a breakdown about 12 m from the NZ tryline just in from his sideline, Campo came off his wing and ran across field, taking a pass from Lynagh and heading for the opposite corner with the ball under his left arm. Just as he got to his nemesis John Kirwan just out from the tryline, Campo shifted the ball to his right arm, slighty hestitated his stride and accelerated on the same line he was running. Kirwan was completely fooled thinking that Campo was going to step off his left foot and TURNED HIS BACK ON THE PLAY while Campo accelerated straight past him to score. This was so subtle yet so brilliant I am surprised it has never attracted the notice it deserved. Only Campese could have conceived, let alone scored this.

How can you not include John Kirwan’s solo try against Italy from the very first World Cup game in 1987
@Martin-pb7ts2 жыл бұрын
People in New Zealand seem to make a fuss about that try but seriously, Italy in 1987 were hardly as good as a top schools XV. And I mean that, they were woeful. It really is not that impressive taken in context. A try like that against a top 5 side, sure, but it needs some perspective.
