I wish that I could have found this channel when I started learning Chinese , I think that it would have made it possible to learn so much quicker . May I ask how you got the idea to make such a systematic series of lessons ?Thank you for these videos they clarify so much of the subject .

The radicals are in my eyes the elementary of making characters, I just present them as they are. But I don't find a lot of materials in English on internet because characters are too difficult for beginners used to latin letters. That also explains why my videos don't have lots of views...😂 It's different systems, but still comparable, if we search for bridges... such as prefixes in English and German, which for me, quite close...

You are an excellent teacher. I am really enjoying learning Mandarin with you. A question: Is a “radical” then the term for a character that is used in combination with another character? I see that some characters when used in combination with others lose some of their strokes. Are those changes the reason we call them “radicals” and not just “characters”? 非常感谢 from the USA!

Hi, first of all thanks a lot for watching and giving feedback! Really appreciated. Secondly you asked a great question! In Chinese we have pianpang, pretty much like prefix in English which defines the meaning and themselves independent characters too. And bushou, which is not characters but appears still as parts and components, with much less meaning. Radical as I found out, is the term for both. In my first character episode I say pianpang all the time and later on I realized no one understood because radical is the known term, closest to what I meant to explain.

Let's say in this episode, 金is an independent character, and a pianpang with a deformed written form in other compound characters. However, the meaning of these compound characters are strongly reflecting the meaning given by金. I hope I didn't confused you even more...

It's just that, some pianpang you can still see the regular form, like the wood木, and some are completely different in faces, like水water, only in a few drops when the character functions as pianpang.金is quite in the middle, recognizable, with some effort...
