Nice video, but it would be much better, if it had example sentences for all these words. Learning words without knowing how to use them in a sentence is useless.

Hi, thanks for your comments. usually I make sentences for words challenging to understand. Like in 心 episode where I gave several for 怠慢,可, and whenever necessary. In this video I assume the challenge for audiences is to realize that there are transportation related words with radicals in common, while grammar is relatively easy, and I don’t want to bore you with sentences 我骑车,你驾车,火车行驶,骑车奔驰 and so on. However, 飞船在轨道上航行 could be helpful to bring several new words in one. How is that?
@nomadka2 күн бұрын
@@ChinesewithJiayi thank for your reply, i think sentences are crucial, and they don't have to be boring, even if short and easy :) I know this video focuses on certain radicals, but also think that example sentences/stories are more important than putting many words in one video. If you know the word, bit don't know how to use it, you'll immediately forget it. Good luck with your videos!

Thank you so much for these videos! The way you are able to explain some of the logic behind both character etymology and word constructions makes it much easier to remember the vocabulary. Coming from a Scandinavian language with lots of prefixes and compound nouns, understanding the "reasoning" behind words works much better than sound memorisation for me. And I find it very interesting when you notice similar conceptual constructions across different languages (like in your recent video where 光 functions similar to the old Germanic "bare-"). Please keep up the good work! I saw you write in another comment that technology might soon replace the need to learn languages - and while that is most certainly true for simply textual translation - learning a language is also (and maybe more importantly) about "knowing your way around the world" ie. understanding cultural/linguistic rules well enough to be able to share your ideas with people around you. Fortunately, I think your talent for communicating conceptual meanings won't be replaced by any machine for at least another few hundred years :)
@ChinesewithJiayi2 күн бұрын
Hi Martin, your message touched me! I definitely share your opinion about the deeper meaning of learning language (I wrote similarly to another audience). I only speak Chinese English and German, but in these languages I find a lot things in common (word order in sentence build between German and Chinese are close), and prefixes in English and German, which you brought up as well, can be compared to radical (and some simple characters around which many words were made, another concept I’m working on). I was stone headed about “languages are just different” when I was young and struggled learning English, and now I’m older I see a million things (not just languages) more in common than their differences.

@@ChinesewithJiayi Thank you for your response. The way our experience of learning a language evolves over a life is definitely fascinating. Especially as we grow old enough to learn to not worry too much about perfection. I will surely look forward to any future videos you have time to make!

@@marksandsmith6778 the first season of my channel is very basic... but no one looked, I had to try other things. Then one day the radical got some views. As a tiny channel new starter, if I do things already done by million others, my videos won't appear on the list at all...
I'm seven months into learning Mandarin. I thought long and hard about learning to write Hanzi, but ultimately decided against it as unnecessary. Why? I thought about how seldom I ever even write English by hand. Even when I do, it's to fill out my name and address or a medical form. I figured that, since I can type PinYin and select the right character, that is good enough to write Mandarin, since all my communications are electronic. I can read over 500 Hanzi and pick out the right ones from the list that shows when I type PinYin. So, learning to write the characters by hand in the right stroke order seems like a HUGE investment of time for something that is basically not used anymore - even by native Chinese people. Sometimes, we just have to learn when it's time to stop with outdated and unnecessary teaching methods.
@ChinesewithJiayi3 күн бұрын
Hi Ron, you are absolutely right about how rare we write by hand today. My vision: eventually tech will free us all from language barriers and I'm eager to embrace that day. You are doing great at choosing characters at pinyin. Congratulations! This video is an introduction, as all my other videos, where I see myself not as a teacher, but a tour guide, to cover all possible corners of a place. Time has changed, we no longer need to sit through a 45 minute class, doesn't matter how much one teacher bores us, nowadays the choices are an ocean. I see learning language more of a hobby, and learning is very personal, everyone expects differently and absorbs knowledge differently. I'm happy for your achievement and would be happy if you find any of my other videos interesting or helpful.

不好意思,老师,不是 “...the Chinese language is like use less characters as possible to describe as many things as possible”, 而是 “...the Chinese language uses as few characters as possible to describe as many things as possible”。 Chinese characters are a form of plural countable noun. Therefore, the word _few_ is used instead of 'less'.

老师,您身体怎么样? I love how you explain separately the characters...., but sometimes the other part is not explained for example on the 脱口秀,the first part was explained, the 秀 was not. And it happens quite often in your videos.
@ChinesewithJiayi6 күн бұрын
谢谢🙏🏼for watching so carefully! I did mentioned 秀 as translation (pure pronunciation, no meaning in this context) of SHOW but it might sound too subtle as I made it together with 脱口. I intend to focus on each video the main topic (either a verb or a radical) and not to go too much deep into words involved in each examples. As you see, it could take days to just talk about each of them😂nonetheless, I take your feedback into consideration to better explain in future programs.

Hi Elsa, you are right about "each character means something", unless it's just a translation of foreign word to match the sound, even if the character itself is full of meanings in other situations...e.g. 秀itself means a lot in other Chinese words, just when it's picked to match the sound of SHOW, then it doesn't...
