If you are looking at modern accidents ok, though you still missed the WORST of all time for Indy car racing, that of Alex Zanardi and Alex Tagliani. I have followed auto racing since 1970 at age 10 and Zanardi's accident is one of four accidents I have seen that has terrified me. Two other Indy car accidents that come from 1973 should also be in this if this is the worst ever. The first is the aborted start of the 1973 Indianapolis 500 when Salt Walther flipped, hit the catch fence, ripped the nose off and spread about, I believe from memory, 100 gallons of racing fuel in the stands and down the track. The other would be the wreck of Swede Savage, coming out of turn four and the car turns hard left and hits the inside retaining wall. This would be a fatal accident and the last of a very sad and horrific month of May.

The lap 11 crash at Las Vegas that killed Dan Wheldon was one of the two or three worst. The 1963 Indy 500 crash that killed Eddie Sachs and Dave McDonald was another. Texas Motor Speedway was designed with NASCAR in mind. The cars that race in NASCAR are quite a bit heavier than IRL open-wheel cars, and just a touch slower. I have walked on the banking at this track, and while I don't know the degree of banking used, it's impressively steep. It comes as no surprise that IRL cars walk up that banking and into the wall. It's also fair to note that the drivers in both leagues hate TMS, as the racing surface and temperatures make this track slick and tricky to drive on.

15:20 What I deduce from this is that rolling starts are way safer than whatever masochistic creation a standing start is. It’s just too risky, having them all start right on the track like that, if just one person stalls, or has a failure, or whatever, the entirety of the field behind them is at a monumental risk.
@jimnasium4527 ай бұрын
Yeah, Indycar tried it *once* then dropped it because they couldn't figure it out. Other series have been doing them forever, some like Formula 1 do multiple standing starts at a single race sometimes.

There were at least 2 separate indy car crashes that happened during the indy 500 where an indy car crashed into the pit lane attenuator and split in half!!! The one both the driver's cockpit and engine rolled and slid to a stop further down pit lane! The other the driver's cockpit ended up sliding and rolling to a stop just short of the first pit boxes and the rear half of the car: the rear axle with wheels bounced down the front straight, the engine sliding and rolled to a stop farther down the front straight just before the start/finish line! There were other cars involved, but they were not crashed as badly as those 2. I do not remember the years that it happened or the driver's names. Also, there was the July 14, 1996 indy car Toronto street circuit when Jeff Krosnoff and a course worker were both killed. 😢😢😢 I remember watching this race live on TV!! 😢😢😢 Then there was September 11, 1999 Gonzalo Rodriguez's crash at Laguna Seca at the top of the cork screw when a driver was killed when he lost control and crashed into the tire barrier flipped over and landed on top of his head on the ground killing him instantly!! 😢😢😢

Nelson Phillipe's crash ended his career. He quit racing after that, and he was only like 21 years old. Also, that crash broke Will Power's back....and he'd break it again 2 years later in the crash that killed Dan Wheldon. Mike Conway WAS seriously injured in that Indy crash. Nothing life threatening but he broke a bunch of bones and had a long recovery. It was noone's fault either except bad luck. It was a fuel mileage race and RHR ran out of fuel as Conway was right on his rear. Nothing either guy could as RHR's car basically died in the short chute. He also had a scary wreck in the 2012 Indy 500 when his tire came off after a pit stop and he nearly went head first on his side into the catch fence. He stopped racing ovals after that and eventually got the Toyota factory driver job and I say its worked out for him
