My first wreck I saw was in 2003 when Del Worsham had a major engine explosion at the finish line bouncing and jostled around until the sand trap stopped his car. Best video to see is called ‘funny car loses body at 300mph’.

Scott Kalitta at Englishtown in 2008. The Kalitta crash and subsequent death directly led to NHRA shortening the track to 1000 feet to give more stopping distance. Also John Lingenfelter at Pomona in 2002. It was a VIOLENT crash.

drivers are not 'trapped' in their cockpits but securely held in them for safety reasons. any race car driver is safest in their seats. the rare exception being Alex Zanardi being the more famous case

About the John Force and Kenny Bernstein crash, John's injuries were not minor. He suffered severe leg and arm injuries. Bernsteins car hit a timing block on the center line and that sent debris in Johns lane. It blew out Johns right rear tire and that with the force of the tug from parachutes ripped Johns car apart.
@tezza37335 ай бұрын
yeah. video is quite clear, shows bernstein clipping the timing block sending it into the rear tire and instantly demolishing the back of the car releasing the chute.
@stanlucas6655 ай бұрын
Sorry guys, but you’re incorrect on what caused the Force Bernstein crash. The time blocks are made of foam now so as not to damage the race cars if they hit one. The clutch let go in John Force’s car cutting it apart at the motor plate sending the front half of the chassis with the motor and body into Bernstein’s lane, as the cockpit and rear end of Force’s car stayed in the left lane. Yes his injuries were extremely serious. Bernstein had absolutely no idea what had happened to Force’s car.

But back then, they did NOT have a lot of the safety measures that are available now! Don Garlits had a few spectacular crashes.

Im not well read on safety standards for drag racing cars, but many of these crashes looks worse than what they are, because the speed is scrubbed off over long distances. Generally speaking, when it comes to high speed trauma, the worst accidents are when there's been a heavy deceleration.

Watching Drag Racing for over 55 years and seeing such terrible crash disasters, I have always wondered why they do not include an Arrester Net half way down the track, that can be dropped to arrest a Rail or Funny-Car out of control. The Navy use Arresters on Aircraft Carriers to catch Aircraft that way many times more than a Drag Racing Automobile. Why not build one like a fence that sits above the track and can be quickly lowered to catch a crashing vehicle? Sure would slow down the vehicle and prevent such disastrous crashes and impact stress to the driver.
@mikegonzalez1821Ай бұрын
Because an arrested nets prevent the cars from absorbing the G forces that are directed at the driver. The vehicles tend to break up because of that mostly helping to keep the drivers from serious injuries.

That's a poorly phrased, callous description of a man's death. His name was Scott Kalitta, at Englishtown, NJ, in 2008. NHRA shortened the nitro races to 1000 feet because of that wreck; E-town had a notoriously short runoff area.
